66 Arrested in Malaysian Online Gambling Raids

66 people have been arrested in Malaysia as the authorities there carried out six raids in the capital Kuala Lumpur, in action targeting the operation of ‘illegal’ online gambling. According to Malaysia’s Star Online, the raids on addresses in Kuala Lumpar took place over several days, between March 18th – March 21st.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said of the first raid, which resulted in the arrests of 25 individuals: “They were running a call centre, targeting customers from China via WeChat.” Lazim also confirmed that a total of 25 computers and 89 mobile phones were seized during the search.
In all, a total of 53 Chinese Nationals were detained, with the raids purpose to shutdown all and any illegal online gambling operations which are being run in the city.
Mazlan went on to mention that he believes the syndicates had only been in operation for a couple of weeks and reaffirmed the police department’s commitment to close down any illegal gambling operations.
