New Police Chief Determined To Stamp Out Online Gambling

Sarawak provincial commander intends to "wipe out" online gambling before the end of 2014

New Year police raids on online gambling operators in the Sarawak province of Malaysia (see previous InfoPowa reports) are probably the work of a new police chief on the scene…and he is determined to put an end to online gambling on his patch before the end of 2014.

The Star newspaper reports that new district police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi has briefed political leaders on his strategy for hammering illegal online gambling operators, saying:

"We will work closely with the local authority to seal up these centres. We will also work with the electricity provider to cut supply to such centres so that they will not be able to operate."

ACP Kamal explained that it was his duty to put illegal operators permanently out of business.

"I have been here for just two weeks and during this period we have already conducted raids in Delta Estate and Sibu Jaya," he said. "As I am still new here, give me time to hapus (wipe out) these centres. We will concentrate first on unlicensed centres and will carry out raids to reduce the number by end of the year."

The new police commander said last year a total of 596 raids were conducted and 245 computers were seized in the province.

"Not all raids last year were successful. Before conducting any raid, we need to have the correct information," ACP Kamal said, adding that the identity of informants would be protected.

In related news, police in Malaysia’s smallest province, Perlis, report that operations against online gambling operators have been conducted by police officers in Kangar, the state capital.

In a New Year’s Eve operation, a police raiding party busted an online gambling syndicate and arrested seven men in the Simpang Ampat area.

Kangar police deputy chief Deputy Superintendent Ismail Che Isa said the suspects were caught red-handed processing bets during an 11.30pm raid at a premises behind a restaurant, in which police seized six laptops and other evidence.
