Malaysian Police To Set Up Special Anti-gambling Squad

By Casinomeister, Last updated Jan 10, 2014

Both conventional and online illegal betting will be targeted

Illegal and online gambling will be the prime targets of a special police unit being set up in Malaysia, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi Monday.

Illegal gambling victims were mostly low-income earners, he said in revealing that the police are to make a concerted effort at both district and state levels to fight the menace.

"I know this is a difficult task, but not an impossible one as we do not want low-income earners to continue to fall prey to illegal gambling operators," he told reporters.

The Bernama news agency reports that the special unit will also tackle secret societies and the use of firearms by criminals, along with drug trafficking.

Drug trafficking by syndicates and peddlers remains a problem despite CID activity, the minister said, adding that police reserve and auxiliary strength could be boosted by some 50,000 officers if government plans are realised.
