Mobilising domestic and international anti illegal gambling measures

The Malaysian Home Ministry has said it will co-operate with Interpol and FIFA to monitor illegal gambling during the World Cup 2014 Tournament.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the initiative has been undertaken as preliminary monitoring had found online gambling taking place with the involvement of illegal International bookmakers.

Malaysian Police have mobilised a forensics unit in collaboration with the Communications and Multimedia Commission, telecommunication companies and private security firms to combat the activity on a domestic level.

"Under the provisions of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing Act 2001, Malaysian police have taken several steps to curb illegal gambling during the World Cup, and will use Section 6 of the Betting Act 1953, Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 as well as AMLATFA to go after the culprits," Datuk said at a media conference held in Parliament yesterday (Monday).

"And we hope, the World Cup will only be watched and not betted upon."
