But poker continues its downward trend

Danish gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden released sports betting and online casino results this week, pointing to its strongest quarter since the sector's liberalisation in January 2012.

Third quarter data, based on duty payments made by license holders, saw gross gaming revenue (GGR) from sports betting reach DKK 495 million (GBP 52.4 million), the result partly attributed to FIFA World Cup 2014.

GGR from online casino showed steady growth of around 10 percent to DKK 265 million (GBP 28 million), as has been the trend in previous quarters.

Online poker yielded a GGR of DKK 40 million (GBP 4.2 million) down from the comparative period in 2013 of DKK 45 million. 15 percent of online casino license GGR was driven by online poker during Q3/2014. In Q1/2012, more than 30 percent was driven by poker, confirming the declining trend of the offer.

Spillemyndigheden says it estimates total gross gaming revenue to reach DKK 2.870 million (GBP 303.8 million) for 2014 but cautions the estimate is subject to revision.

Other interesting market stats include:

– Currently, 31 licence holders hold 15 licences to provide betting and 29 licences to provide online casino in the Danish market.

– 9 online casino licences and 7 betting licences reached a GGR below DKK 5 million in 2013.

– 10 online casino licences and 3 betting licences reached a GGR above DKK 25 million in 2013.

– From June 2012, the ROFUS registry for voluntary exclusion has grown to 4000. Around 70 percent have excluded themselves permanently, while the rest have excluded themselves for 1-6 months. More than 75 percent of those registered are male.
