Kuala Lumpur Blast Targets Gambling Kingpin

Hit arranged for recruiting bookies from other syndicates

The Malay Mail reports the detonation of two grenades in the early hours of yesterday morning, apparently triggered by rival Malaysian online gambling syndicates.

The blasts fatally wounded one man and injured 13 others in front of the Cherry Blossom pub situated in the Sun Complex in bustling Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

Quoting a source "close to police investigations" the report said Ah Hai (53), the target of the unsuccessful hit, was recruiting bookies from other online gambling syndicates in an effort to expand his "gambling empire".

"Ah Hai was meant to be killed instantly as he was 'pinching' almost everyone who were working for the top bookies," the Malay Mail's source said.

Police have ruled out terrorism as a motive, saying that the deadly blast was likely motivated by business rivalry among underworld figures.
