Police in Malaysia get 2015 off to a crushing start

In the first tranche of destruction this year, Malaysian police in Ampang Jaya have crushed 2,057 computer sets seized from convicted illegal online gambling operators.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Khairuldin Saat told local reporters that the computers were connected to 158 cases, revealing:

"In 2012, we conducted 794 raids and arrested 218 people involved in illegal online gambling outlets. The following year, we conducted 1,440 raids and arrested 167 people."

During those raids the police seized 1,957 computers in 2012 and 1,782 in 2013, mainly from illegal gambling outfits operating from cybercafes.

It was necessary to destroy the equipment to prevent it being recycled back into the illegal gambling industry, the police spokesman said.
