Affecting the youth and the poor, leaving them destitute say member of Government

India's Home Minister KJ George said in Legislative Council this week that authorities would be clamping down on the mushrooming illegal online horserace betting industry.

Stringent action is to be taken against gambling centres that senior member Vimala Gowda said situate themselves close to colleges and residential areas.

"Lives of our students and youths are being systematically destroyed with these illegal gambling centres which stream the races live online. Many senior police officers and politicians are hand in glove with these gambling mafia," Gowda alleged.

Gowda went on to ask for a withdrawal of permissions given to off-course betting centres saying they were attracting the young and the poor.

The India Government is currently moving through the court system to ensure a city racecourse is moved out of the city limits, a request already upheld by the High Court where it now sits before the Supreme Court.
