On the run-up to this year's World Series of Poker professional player Brian Hastings offered 3.3 to 1 side action that he would win a bracelet, and as a result his prop bet profits have exceeded the first prize he claimed over the weekend in event 27, the $10,000 buy-in Seven-Card Stud Championship.
Nevertheless, the award of his second winner's bracelet and the $239,518 prize money – his fourteenth WSOP cash – were a cause for celebration for the 26-year-old from Pennsylvania. And there's more to come, with Hastings' prop bet card reportedly fully booked by those gambling on his capabilities in events like the $25,000 Fantasy Draft.
Post-game, Hastings said he had put a lot of on and off-table preparatory work into his performance.
"Given the fact that [Seven-Card Stud] is a game that some people say is an older generation's game and isn't played as much these days, I take a lot of pride in it," he said. "I think stud high is one of my better games. I think I played great throughout the tournament. It means a lot to win this one."
There were 91 entrants in the event, with the international poker ace contingent strongly represented. Two other WSOP bracelet champs made the final table with Hastings, who led the pack with over 25 percent of the chips in play.
Dan Kelly gave Hastings a brief scare at one point, but the Pennsylvanian pro kept his cool and quickly chipped up again in subsequent hands to enter the heads up against fellow pro Scott Clements with a 2 to 1 chip lead that Clements was unable to reverse.
Clements' runner up pay day was worth $148,001, whilst the rest of the final table took home:
