What is the Biggest Casino in the UK?
By Alex Smith, Last updated Mar 23, 2024
You may be surprised to learn that some of the world’s biggest online gambling operators – Gala Coral Group, Grosvenor, and Genting – own around 75% of the UK’s land-based casinos. With the UK offering around 140 land-based casinos, just over 100 are operated by these three companies.
Genting is, by far, the largest operator of land-based casinos in the UK. However, do you know the most prominent land-based casinos in the UK? That’s what we will be looking at below! Let’s look at the most prominent land-based casino in the UK – The Hippodrome Casino.
Hippodrome Casino – Huge Poker Room?
The Hippodrome Casino is the largest land-based casino in the UK by a country mile. Alongside casino games, the Hippodrome Casino features a theater, a nightclub, a circus, and many restaurants and bars. There is a massive poker room with a wide variety of cash games and tournaments.
Hippodrome Casino takes up 93,000 square feet in Central London, situated in the famous West End area. The Hippodrome Casino cost £40 million and was officially opened in July 2012. The opening ceremony was performed by the then-Major of London, Boris Johnson.
The Hippodrome Casino is so impressive because it spans four floors. There are 18 roulette tables, 15 blackjack tables, and more than 500 slot machines inside. In addition to these casino games, players will find some more unusual casino games like Casino War, Pai Gow, and Craps.
The Hippodrome Casino doesn’t have online casino sites attached to it, but this may well change shortly. Like all significant UK casino operators, the casino is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You don’t even need to register to be able to play there!
Aspers Casino
Aspers Casino is located in the East End of London, unsurprisingly, Stratford. It covers some 65,000 square feet and claims to be the first “large” casino to obtain a gaming license. It’s located within the Westfield Stratford shopping mall and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Punters can play there 364 days a year; it’s closed on Christmas Day.
Surprisingly, the number of staff employed by Aspers Casino is quite low; only around 400 employees work full time at the casino. They offer a great selection of games, and, like all casinos in the UK, you will find a wide variety of slot machines and casino table games. There is also a 400-seat poker room.
To many people’s amusement, Aspers Casino regularly claims to be the most prominent land-based casino in the UK. However, this isn’t the case; as we already saw, the Hippodrome is much more significant.
Genting International Casino Birmingham
Genting International Casino Birmingham, previously known as Genting Casino Resorts World, is located in a seven-story building in Birmingham. The building covers a whopping 538,000 square feet and is designed to resemble the appearance of a giant cruise ship. Genting International Casino Birmingham was the first casino resort in Europe. Even today, few other land-based casinos can offer the same high-quality service.
One of the significant benefits of Genting International Casino Birmingham is that it offers all-inclusive entertainment. Punters can pay a fixed price and get a hotel room, drinks, and food altogether.
While the building is massive, the casino only covers around 59,180 square feet. It’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You will find various slot machines and more than 40 casino table games. Genting International Casino Birmingham offers more than 65 electronic gaming terminals in addition to these casino games. There is also a sports bar, where you can place bets on sporting events worldwide.
Empire Casino
The Empire Casino in London covers 55,000 square feet. It’s the fourth biggest casino in the UK and one of the most popular. It would be the third-biggest casino in London if you were wondering. The Empire Casino forms part of the Caesars Entertainment Group. The fact that it has such prominent backers is one of the reasons why it was able to be built in the first place!
Also known as The Casino at the Empire, the location is unrivaled; it’s situated right by Broadway and is just a minute’s walk from the Hippodrome. As you can imagine, the Empire Casino is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week – 364 days a year.
There are more than 300 slot machines, 60 casino table games, and a poker room. The poker room occasionally holds some quite big tournaments. In addition to its gaming facilities, the Empire Casino also offers sports betting facilities. There are a few on-site restaurants and a couple of bars.
Genting Club Casino
Genting Club Casino is another casino located outside of London in Sheffield. Not only is it the fifth-biggest casino in the UK, but it’s also one of the most popular attractions in Sheffield! Spanning two floors, the Genting Club Casino covers some 35,000 square feet! This may not sound like much, especially compared to some of the casinos in London – but it’s still a pretty sizable location!
Like all of the casinos on this list, Genting Club Casino is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s only closed on Christmas Day. However, there aren’t as many gaming options as some of the other casinos we’ve looked at. For example, there are only 16 casino table games and 38 electronic gaming machines.
However, when it comes to blackjack tables, there are many. Plus, many of the blackjack tables feature side bet options. In addition, you will find yourself able to play more than 200 slot machines. This includes video slots that have progressive jackpots attached to them.
It’s unclear whether Genting Club Casino Sheffield offers poker facilities from their website. However, we have it on good authority that they operate a poker room – apparently, it’s pretty big!
Genting Casino Fountain Park
Genting Casino Fountain Park is the Northernmost casino we have looked at. It’s located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and covers some 27,000 square feet. While this may not sound like a lot – especially compared to Las Vegas casinos – it’s the biggest in the city. Genting Casino Fountain Park is located in a retail park just west of the city center.
While Genting Casino Fountain Park doesn’t look too impressive from the outside, the casino is well-worth visiting. It’s also a LOT more spacious than it may first seem. That’s thanks to the fact that it is located in the basement area. Its positioning allows it to occupy space underneath other shops. Unfortunately, the Genting Casino Fountain Park isn’t open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can visit between the hours of 12 pm and 6 am.
The game range is also a bit smaller than we’re used to seeing at casinos in the UK. There are 20 slot machines, 30 electronic roulette tables, and a small selection of other casino table games. There is a poker hall, although it’s unclear how frequently tournaments and cash games run here.
Les Croupiers Casino
Les Croupiers Casino is Cardiff’s biggest casino, taking up 20,000 square feet. While this may not sound like much compared to the other casinos we have looked at on this page; it’s still a pretty big complex. It’s now even got the title of the biggest casino in Wales!
Locals call Les Croupiers Casino “The Croups,” and it’s been running for more than 40 years. This makes it one of the longest-running brick-and-mortar casinos in the UK! There is quite a small selection of casino games on offer. You will find 20 gaming tables, 56 video slots, a few roulette machines, and a 200-seat poker hall. The poker facilities at the casino are surprisingly good. You will find frequent cash games and tournaments to enjoy.
In addition to these features, the Les Croupiers Casino also has a sports bar. Here, you will find 10 HD multi-screen Sky TV channels, all broadcasting live sporting events worldwide. Naturally, you can place bets on these sporting events if you like. The casino – and sports bar – are both open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, the poker facilities do not run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so bear this in minimum deposit.
Rainbow Casino
Rainbow Casino is located in Birmingham and is the oldest land-based casino in the city. It first started accepting visitors in 1962, and more than 50 years later, it’s still going strong! However, as you’ll have noticed, the size of various locations is starting to decrease.
For example, the square footage of Rainbow Casino is just 5,000! This makes it much smaller than some of the land-based casinos we looked at earlier! However, despite its small size, the 5000 square feet is still enough to position Rainbow Casino 8th on this list!
Rainbow Casino has six blackjack tables, six roulette tables, one punto banco table, and several electronic roulette machines. There are also a wide variety of video slots with progressive jackpots.
There are also poker facilities. However, the poker hall can only seat a total of 45 players, so don’t expect anything too exciting here. Some decent cash games run on the weekends, though.
Grosvenor Casino Liverpool
Grosvenor Casino Liverpool is one of the only land-based casinos on this list to also work with online casinos. Unfortunately, the square footage of the Grosvenor Casino Liverpool isn’t publicly available. However, it’s still a pretty big casino – and because of this, we’ve placed it in 9th position on this list. In the past, Grosvenor Casino Liverpool was known as Grosvenor Leo; this was before it was owned and operated by Grosvenor independently.
Grosvenor Casino Liverpool is located on the waterfront and offers beautiful marina views. It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and offers players a wide variety of games. For example, you will find 13 different video slots, 12 electronic roulette terminals, 3 American roulette tables, two blackjack tables, and even a Caribbean Stud Poker table.
Grosvenor Casino Liverpool also offers a dedicated poker room. Various cash games and tournaments can be found here. It’s most active, however, at the weekend.
Park Lane Casino
Park Lane Casino is one of the most prestigious casinos in the world. It’s located in London, and it’s an exclusive private members-only club. The annual fee is a whopping £1,000!
As you can imagine, the Park Lane Casino is designed for high-rollers and VIPs. It’s located inside the Hilton Hotel in Mayfair. Park Lane Casino covers two floors, and the top floor is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The lower floor opens at 9pm. Park Lane Casino offers various casino games, including video slots, blackjack, roulette, and baccarat.
Large TV screens showcase the biggest sporting events and some random number generator roulette machines. It isn’t clear whether Park Lane Casino has any restaurants, although we’re positive a wide variety of food will be offered. Guests can sometimes get “comped” free hotel rooms at the Hilton, especially if they’re gambling large amounts of money.
