You guys who like video games probably learned about the Blizzard controversy of the last few days. In a nutshell, their new release of Diablo is a just "reskin" of a mobile Chinese game called Crusaders of lights, which made many fans angry.

Anyway, within that Crusaders game (like many games these days) there are "microtransactions" which is how they make money. The game itself is free but buying in-game stuff is "almost" required if you want to compete.

I thought the following Reddit post would interest you people, if you have a minute take the time to read it...especially the hybrid CM players who like video games and gambling.

Microtransactions are a blight on videogames. In free-to-play games it's how they make their money so you can kind of give them a pass, although often the games are specifically designed to frustrate the player at key points to encourage spending real money to get over whatever the hump is.

The problem is they're now a mainstay of full-price games as well, for example the new Assassin's Creed game (which by all accounts is very good), is a full-price premium product, available in multiple editions, some of which are very expensive. And yet, one of the offered in-game purchases is a $10 'XP BOOSTER' which increases the rate of XP gain in the game by 50%.

Then they level-gate the main campaign in such a way that during the midgame, the player has to either grind loads of dull side missions to hit the arbitrary level requirement to continue the main campaign, or cave in and buy the XP booster - it's incredibly cynical design.

I remember loving the original Plants Vs Zombies, it was a single purchase for a set amount of money, and you got the entire game for that money. So when the sequel came out I was all over it, but they'd turned it into a free-to-play microtransaction riddled swamp, with certain levels clearly designed to need particular plants, and guess what, you can buy that plant for real money.

Add in the fact that a lot of game developers treat their workforce appallingly badly (as recently surfaced with Rockstar over their new game Red Dead Redemption 2), it does put something of a negative stain on my favourite pastime.

You have learnt a lesson that 5 FS on Buffalo is the highest-volatility and poorest choice. If you have a slot win frequency of 1/3 spins then you are buying one or possibly 2 wins for your tenner on average, in fact 1.66 wins overall which may or may not cascade multiple times. I would always recommend therefore the 15 starting at 1x. It gives more scope for winning cascades some of which could go several actions. I tried the 5 spins option 20 times in testing and saw only 2 exceed 100x base stake.

I rarely play video games these days but I knew that microtrasactions are a very effective way for them to make money. I remember not liking the idea of paying a monthly fee to play WOW but this is worse IMO.

That being said, in the Reddit link that I posted the OP said that some players "invested" $20k on that mobile game (that's way beyond crazy) and some others players won 10k/each in an in-game competition with real money attached. These players luckily escaped the game with their money back and never played again. How can a game accept $20,000 from a single player? We're way past a $10 pack to enhance your game experience here. Also a $400,000 prize pool in-game for 40 players?

Here's the most disturbing part of the Reddit post:

Quality games of all types provide genuine endorphin rush moments that leave you thinking wow. Crusader's of Light was no different. Because if feels really f***ing good when the in app store rng rolls in your favor and you don't have to drop another $1000 to get whatever you're needing.

Endorphin rush in app store? RNG involving money in video games? $1000? What the hell is happening?

Yep, a popular party piece by greedy developers that's engulfing the gaming industry too.

Just had Ubisoft scrap players' gear stats for their game, For Honor. Many months of grinding, let alone purchasing upgrades for their characters, such as Attack/ Defence etc etc....all replaced with an all-new 'Feats' system. I was unaware companies could get away with charging for microtransactions for months (here, in the form of Steel) and then going "Nah. Don't worry about it"

So now they're re-monetizing new content to attract a new influx of players, whilst sticking two fingers up at their core userbase that have spent a bomb.

My character, from being a badass killing machine, can now run fast and revive people quickly. Thanks Ubisoft!

Some videogame chat and fruit machine emulation stuff, courtesy of Forza Horizon 4 for the former, and fruit machine emulation for the latter. (I've just bought a 32 inch 4K screen for my PC, basically for fruit machine emulation.)

I'd be the first to admit, I'm finding it increasingly tricky to justify lobbing hundreds of pounds at online slots, when this sort of 'permanent joy', if you will, is available for relatively modest amounts of cash compared to what online casinos will hoover up off you over the course of a weekend with little or no satisfaction.

The original was created by Popcap (in 2009), EA aquired them in 2011 and everything after that has been EA-ified. Big fan of the original Popcap catalogue, won't touch anything post-acquisition because it's pay-to-win crap.

I don't know if the percentages shown are genuine, but given the number of gambles required I expect those numbers are going to get very scary very quickly.

In Extra Chilli, you'd need 50-50 to 12 then 60-40 for 16 20 and 24 spins - 1 in 9.25 attempts to go from 8 to 24 spins.

Once you are getting to 30 or 40 spins, going to be talking thousands of times (base) stake being risked... even on a 20p spin that's hundreds of pounds!

I'm curious what the RTP loss of each strategy is, e.g. if you never gambled or if you stopped at say 16 every time. When we are talking 25+ spins, it feels like that'll be for the hardcore degens and the streamers only - no-one else is going to be bonkers enough or bankrolled enough to risk that much money in one gamble.

I took the plunge and bought an xbox one s on black friday, £179.99 with a few games seemed a good deal and if I haven't got the dexterity to play games using the controller, the 4k blu ray and online apps will still be useful, though I haven't even got it unboxed yet

I did consider getting the ps4 pro or xbox x but figured I need to see if I can get the knack of these modern games first having not touched a console since the ps1.

I've got a lot of mileage (no pun intended) out of Forza Horizon 4, I recently bought Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom as well.

Two Point Hospital has been getting a lot of play out of me on PC, and I'll be coming up to my fifth anniversary of playing Hearthstone in February....

On Switch I snagged Octopath Traveler for £30 in a Christmas sale.

PS4 Pro hasn't had a lot of action recently.

I'm loving using a 4K monitor on my PC, as what I do is split the screen into four 1080p quarters, and essentially use it as 'four PCs' running at once. (Or for dual slot play at Videoslots for example, I'll have the casino window across the top half of the screen, and then two 1080p Windows underneath that.)

This is how I had the screen configured for the session in the video above, as you can see, I still have two 1080p quarters of the screen free for other stuff on the bottom half of the screen.

haha I had inkling it might have been Forza, just looked up the monster boy title - wow! - the prequel to wonderboy III, [that was a brilliant sega master system game, played that a lot back in the 80's when we had been used to basic spectrum graphics] I must say it looks really cool, I've missed this type of side on scrolling game, we've got too many fps and 3d style games, sometimes its nice to get back to a fun game rather than ones based on movie style realism.

I think I'll get it once the price comes down, I'm a bit tight re gaming I like to pick up bargains even if it means waiting a bit I got 2 free lego games, lord of the rings etc.. from humble last week for my now ancient pc, mad max was £1.99 as well but think my dual core would struggle with that

Two point hospital looks good, a big update on theme hospital, use to like that something strangely enjoyable building your own hospital and then watching the patients with odd illnesses using it. I've never played Hearthstone, it's a card battle game , 5 years! must be good, I thought your profile pic had a world of warcraft look to it those games totally passed me by as I was out of the gaming scene for a decade!

That's magic what you can do with your 32 inch 4k monitor, very handy to have it viewable all on one screen especially when you make videos, it must've been more time consuming and awkward having to use seperate tabs and overlapping windows. It's amazing how these emulators can recreate the whole slot machine, artwork, lights, sound and all, must taken ages to do them

enjoyed your new video chopley, only ever seen the cover artwork of this borderlands 2 game not actual gameplay, the comic style graphics have been done really well, had to chuckle when that bloke kept getting in your way at the fruit machines . I think your natural enthusiasm and style is made for gaming reviews, but I think you could take any subject, even emulsion paint, and make an engaging and funny video on it Share your view on online slots, atm I'm finding it very rare to have an entertaining session, deposits go in a flash

Really liked your take on Videoslots lowering there RTP. The comment made by L&L manager on the forum re RTP really liked their input and maybe I'll start making a few deposits again with one of there casinos. The RTP at Videoslots doesn't affect me as well but after watching your video really does show you they undermined their players and as a loyal player my self does not appreciate that one bit. And besides, because it doesn't affect me as yet we need to stand up and support for the ones it does. I noticed that Videoslots user rating is 8.5 on Casinomeister, sure it was higher. So I guess they are kicking themselves up the ars! That speaks volumes hope damage control can fix it.

There still my #1 to go to but doesn't mean I have to like what they have done, your video has reminded me of that!!!

That was the infamous 9th. Hole slot at Rival site Tropica.

He actually didn't beat the maths first time around, but at the second attempt. Nevertheless attempt #2 certainly put him way ahead overall. Just don't mention 'Scatterville f*cking Skunks' to him.
