Account opening whilst registered on GamStop

Good afternoon everyone,

First of all I have to take my side of the blame in all this, after all it was my lack of willpower coupled with a really bad day at work that meant I got home and felt I needed to gamble to make myself feel better.

I haven’t been able to find a Betfred rep on this site so I’m still waiting for the support team to reply to me.

I signed up to GamStop in 2019 for 5 years after I had a big win on a site and thought that’s it for me. I’ve made sure I kept my file updated with changes of address and phone numbers etc.

On Monday evening I got home from work and tried to sign up to Ladbrokes, it blocked me immediately. William Hill did the same. Betfred though on the other hand allowed me to sign up using the same details as on my GamStop file and that Ladbrokes/William Hill picked up.

I made my first deposit of £50 followed by 6 of £100 and 1 of £150, all within a couple of hours. At no time was I asked for ID or was any deposit queried. I felt disgusted with myself and actually went to sleep upset and annoyed with myself, but then that turned to feeling let down by both GamStop and Betfred that this was allowed to happen.

I have emailed Betfred who said the next day "your account has been closed due to GamStop exclusion" and have asked me to forward my GamStop file so I emailed GamStop (tagging in Betfred’s support email) and how I’m just waiting to see what happens.

Like I said, I accept my willpower and mental state let me down but I can’t believe that Betfred allowed me to create an account from scratch and deposit such a large amount of funds. What are the chances of having my deposits returned to me? As I am pretty sure if I had won and I had to send in physical ID they would’ve noticed I’m GamStop registered and wouldn’t have paid out so playing was totally pointless.

Thank you everyone for reading this, and I guess I can say don’t try and rely on GamStop alone. I’m now in the process of chasing up with my bank to see if I can have all betting sites blocked with my account.

If like you said you did put all your details in correct and you wasn't trying to by pass it, which I believe you when you say you used same details, Then they should refund you fully IMO, Just email them and fight them all the way.
Good luck with that.

There are others on here who will help you more with this.

Thank you for this reply, you’ve made me feel much better.

I did use the same details, I knew if I tried to bypass the system by changing details then if I did win they wouldn’t pay out anyway when checked against my ID.

My name, date of birth and address was all the same as on my GamStop file. I used a secondary email address that I have for work but I’ve since learnt they don’t really check email addresses against GamStop registrations because they’re so easily changed where as name, DOB and address are more firnly

You may want to consider downloading and installing Betblocker on all of your devices. This along with GamStop is a very good way to help ensure you are unable to visit a gambling site, when you have moments of weakness.
You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

That’s great advice thank you. I had a Gamban profile installed on my iPhone for months but that was easy to circumnavigate. I think what I’ll do is install software such as this but ask a friend to set any passwords that are needed so that I don’t have the temptation to remove them.

I am still waiting to hear back off both betfred and GamStop regarding this so I’ll keep you all posted. Thank you again for all the words everyone

The good thing with BetBlocker is that it is nigh on impossible to get round, once you have installed it and activated it. You pretty much would have to reset the devices it is installed on to factory default settings, thus losing everything you have on them.

To update everyone, it’s been 8 days since I first reported this to both GamStop and Betfred and I’m not even close to getting anything resolved.

First of all Betfred said they couldn’t accept my GamStop file as I had just forwarded it to them from the email GamStop sent me. This took 3 days of emails to and fro. They said they need to be CC’d into the email GamStop send me with the file on. Fair enough I thought.

So I contacted GamStop again and asked them to CC Betfred in and went through the whole thing again, which took another few days. Today Betfred have got back to me and said they can’t accept it as it’s from a different email to the one I used to register with them.

This just seems to be delaying tactics as surely the fact I’ve sent my GamStop file to Betfred and they’ve been CC’d in from GamStop should be enough? I mentioned in the email that my GamStop email address is different to the one I used to open the Betfred account (that email address is on my GamStop file too).

I’m stressed out like crazy! 8 days of emails to and from both of these and I’m no nearer to getting things sorted. Has anyone got any advice please? Or has anyone else had a similar experience?

Thank you,

Marc

Result should be quite straight forward, if in your registration details are enough matching details to your Gamstop details at the time, you shouldn't be able to register at all.

For some reason, you were not recognized by Gamsto, you stated your email was at least different, that alone yet shouldn't be enough. Just wait and see reply you get, they can't just decide to ignore Gamstop registration if these details are matching enough, if there are enough discrepancies compare to your Gamstop details, then it's not on casinos hand as they don't maintain Gamstop database, they only compare details to them and get response if details are there or not or have previously been.

They for sure review these quite carefully as Gamstop failure would be really serious one, you will get your decision and if your details do match with Gamstop you will get refunded if there are too many which are not, then you don't. It's very easy still to circumvent, like email is already one of these details they compare, if too many don't match 100% (spelling mistakes and "mistakes" included) then it unfortunately is your sole responsibility.

You will get pretty sure get right decision as it's very black and white and easy to say right away if it should have triggered or not. It's been weekend now in middle, there possibly some manager or other bit more senior employee review your case as they don't wanna get it wrong with this. As you used different email address, they possibly wanted to double check that these both email addresses more or less belongs to you and now they should be quite sure about that if you have sent your Gamstop file from your both emails (one you used Gamstop and one to registrate with them).

Thank you for this reply, I really appreciate the time you put into it and being so in depth.

The details that matched are my Full name, date of birth, home address and mobile number. It was just the email address that was different. I could accept it as a fault on my part (I actually do take my share of the blame as it was me setting the account up) if I circumnavigated the sign up procedure with different names, address’ and phone number but consciously I knew that if I put different details in I wouldn’t be able to withdraw anyway when my ID would be checked so all my details were as they are on my GamStop file.

Like said, you will get this properly sorted, if casino have failed Gamstop exclusion which they should have picked up, they have no defence and will happily pay you deposits back and be happy if it was only one isolated flaw in the system. I know time goes very slow when you have to wait but positive thing is that i can pretty much guarantee that you get fair decision, they can't just hide this nature of thing anywhere and trying would be first step for failing, it's black or white in these, there are no grey colours in middle.

Only email shouldn't yet make it possible to get around Gamstop, that's for sure, not willing to go too much in detail about Gamstop triggers, just not to write anything to the internet which possibly could encourage or help somebody looking to get around that but it's really quite simple rules between casinos and Gamstop what is needed to trigger it.

Haven't heard many stories where Gamstop actually would have failed but of course it can happen like many other temporary flaws, mostly it is too many details not matching for various reasons. Therefore i really recommend keeping all emails and other details they store, up to date as if you have different email, then it's one less detail incorrectly needed and sometimes that last incorrect detail can be just a really simple spelling mistake (but in that case you have already entered some details wrong or are very drunk to make typos all the time so nobody doesn't get through only with just accidental typo, needs own effort).

You will hear back from them, if they say your details were not matching with Gamstop, ask which details were not and if you think they are wrong, use your right to access your information and submit SAR and specify in it that you especially want your personal details as they are registered in their system.

Whatever happens with this, stay in your decision not to gamble as your only options pretty much are unlicensed rogue operators where you can't get anything good ever.

I would be telling them the email does not make a difference, the personal details are what they should be looking at, and the fact they auto verified you on account opening (as they have to under their LCCP) means you should have been flagged up by their gamstop checks. You consider their saying you are using a different email address as a means to avoid taking responsibility for their failure is clearly them attempting to circumvent the regulations, and, as such, if you don't receive a full reply within 48 hours, you will be passing your complaint to the UKGC to investigate.

Aww I know this stressed out feeling oh so well unfortunately.

Very similar situation going on at this end.

I registered with gamstop on the 10th April. Pretty much right away all my online account were closed down accept from ladbrokes.

Stupid me noticed this and put in £2100 over a 12 day period and thought what am I actually doing and how the hell am I even able to do so.

I got in contact with gamstop. Emails sent to ladbrokes with copies of my gamstop registration. Was after this that ladbrokes then noticed their error and my account was closed.

The reason I say their error was noticed was that I spoke with someone on ladbrokes livechat prior to my account being closed. I had asked why I was able to deposit ec and they came back and said if I wanted my ban lifted I needed to contact gamstop?

This didn't make sense but confirmed to ,me that the IT department had messed up somewhere.

Anyway all my details on gamstop were correct and the only detail on ladbrokes that was different was my home address which was the same with all my online casino accounts as I hadn't yet changed it.

It was enough for the rest to close down my account so why not ladbrokes.

I may never know. This was 3 weeks ago and il now lost count of how many emails I have sent to ladbrokes. Apparently my complaint is with a case manager but im not holding my breath for a response.

I feel your frustration and I hope you have better luck than I do getting it sorted

Did you supply your previous address(es) to Gamstop?

It was my current address that was on gamstop as I never really gave my old address being on my casino accounts a second thought because all the rest had been closed down
I'm assuming my name, dob and email address ec all being correct was enough for the rest of them to close my accounts... ladbrokes was aware of gamstop being in place, as confirmed my live chat team so I dont think it had anything to do with my address but my guessing is thats what they may hit out with..... if they even bother to respond ?

Gamstop specifically ask for all your previous postcodes though, how long ago did you move?
Was everything else exactly the same, email address, telephone number for example?

I moved about 5 years ago. Yes all the other details on my account matched with what was on gamstop. Like I said It never even crossed my mind that the address was different but I do accept responsibility for making the deposits in the first place. Also before my account was closed I did go on to ladbrokes to check my personal details and when I saw it was my old address still on there I tried to click on change my details. It came up saying that if I was changing my details I would need to phone the number displayed (which I done) straight onto an automated call saying due to the current pandemic they couldn't accept calls at this time.

Do you think I'm wasting my time chasing to get my deposits back here ? Should I give up the fight and stop emailing ladbrokes

I think it's stretching it a bit that you didn't change your address for 5 years after you moved.
I don't think you need to send them multiple emails, just go through the complaints procedure and see what comes of it.

Yes, im still waiting 3 and a half weeks later through their complaints procedure lol

They have 8 weeks to give a final response so you just have to wait. Sending multiple emails doesn't do you any good, if anything it will delay things further as they have to be added to the file etc.

How are insults like this helpful? They aren't, so please don't.
