Nuclear warfare won't happen, countries' armament of them is purely for clout and so as to be taken seriously when at the negotiating table.

Leaders and nations have seen what effect they have since they were used decades ago, when their devastation was still to be fully determined. And as much as humans like to project and conjure up Armageddon- esque scenarios, ICBM attacks certainly aren't in any way realistic.

Only scenario this would even be thought of is if a leader's perhaps lost a conflict and sends out a nuke out of spite, and because they're effectively finished anyway, and their 'cause' turned to chicken- feed.

Thing with that is, those ordered to launch said nukes wouldn't follow through, I believe there's a point where the 'process' would be terminated. So I wouldn't go losing my marbles over imaginary nuclear strikes just yet

In other news I watched this a few days ago, one to give you nightmares..... It's a BBC TV film from 1984, but has got a recent remaster and is available from Amazon. It's pretty grim, my conclusion was that in the event of a nuclear war, you really want to die in the initial blasts, you don't want to be around for what's left.

Today Snaitech - one of the italian leaders of the sport betting - decided to boicott all events of Russian and Belarussian teams and athlets.
As per source (ANSA):

All bets on sporting events in Russian territory suspended.

This is the decision taken by Snaitech which takes sides in the chorus of those calling for a ceasefire and a return to peace.

The measure has immediate effect: all games relating to men's and women's football championships have already been eliminated from the Snai schedule, as well as those on other sports very popular in Russia, such as basketball, ice hockey, handball, volleyball and table tennis. Also canceled bets on all competitions scheduled in Belarus, a country indirectly involved in the aggression against Ukraine. Of course, winning bets made in the period preceding the suspension will be regularly paid out. The same measures were adopted in Germany and Austria for Happybet, an operator active both on the retail and online channels.

As far as I am concerned, I am actually happy with this decision, even if I understand that this won't solve any problem.

Priti Patel's really getting lambasted now and shown up for being completely out of her depth. Always talked a good game, but hasn't got a handle on any facet of border control.

Whilst employing escorting patrol jet skis for Dover arrivals and unable to effectively task new arrivals there, she's throwing the kitchen sink at displaced Ukrainian families and peoples. The contrast is staggering, and there are calls for her to be sacked.

I believe the UK's taken in a grand total of 500 thus far?

It's just been confirmed on Sky News that the earliest appointments (yes, you need to book an appointment) are in two weeks' time.

Utterly inhumane policy that marks the UK out as a pariah in Europe when it comes to helping these desperate people who are fleeing from having their homes bombed and being shot at by Russian soldiers.

Sad thing is even if he does use them i doubt any country will get involved.

All we can hope for is the powerful people in Russia have enough and remove him one way or the other.

If NATO get directly involved we're staring down the barrel of a nuclear WW3, it's an impossibly awful situation. Sit back and Putin basically does what he wants in Ukraine, fight with Russia directly and it's potentially the end of the world.

Seen some comments re the 1st WW, e.g in comparison look how easily that kicked off. Millions dead due to an archduke's assassination. The politicians we have these days are chancers prone to soundbites, not sure if that is a good combination alongside a nuclear arsenal ready for the worst case scenario. Don't think it would get that far, but the we are counting on putin's defeat/coup in order to forget the nuclear risks.

NATO knocks which is just in name, as well as sanctions. If the sanctions are imposed as before, Russia will still have money for armaments. They were supposed to remove Russian banks from the SWIFT system, but why were the largest Russian banks omitted? The second thing is I don't know if people are aware that Germany today pays Russia about 600 million euros a day for raw materials (200 million natural gas and 400 million crude oil). And finally, thirdly, it should be mentioned that the payment for raw materials is not via the SWIFT banking system, but via SEPA. Theoretically, there are sanctions, but some of them are only theory.

It should also be added that Ukraine was in a sense served to Russia on a tray. Putin assured the world until the very end that he would not attack Ukraine. It is therefore reasonable to ask why all countries ordered their citizens to leave Ukraine, both ambassadors and civilians? Such a step was like leaving the door open for a thief. Since Putin said he would not attack, NATO should say briefly - Remember that if you attack Ukraine, our citizens are there, citizens of NATO member states! If you want to attack, do it so that their hair does not gasp, otherwise you will have problems. In this way, NATO would show its strength and perhaps there would be no attack on Ukraine.

How do you know if Ukraine was not sacrificed to convince people to put money on renewable energy sources? In the EU alone, the energy transition is estimated at a minimum of EUR 2 trillion. I think there are people willing to sacrifice many lives for that kind of money. There was a lot of opposition to the fit for 55 climate package, now everyone agrees that in order to become independent from Russia you need to invest in renewable energy sources. This would explain that the current sanctions are just a fiction. Yes, ordinary people will feel them, but not the Russian government, which will continue to be financed by the West.
