Hi Guys, I am new here and have been rather a silly boy and opened an account with what I believe to be a scam casino called 'the red lion casino' which claim to be licenced in Curacao but when I email the e-gambing commision in Curacao they have never heard of this casino. They seem to offer all the games and services (netbet) that are not to be offered in the UK. they dont seem to show their licence number presumably because they don't have one.

I opened it because I am on gamblock and I am self excluded myself from UK bookmakers as I am a problem gambler but that is a different story. I deposited many times to the tune of 2000 over 2 credit cards and they show as a dodgy transaction company in Moscow on my statement. I played and won some money which I wanted to withdraw (1500) and I went to make a withdrawal and I was told by their customer services £500 was the maximum and only withdrawal at a time dispite their own 'terms and conditions' saying that 10k was the maximum monthly withdawal limit. they just see to make up the rules to suit them. this took days and days of emailing them to withdraw it so I could get my money back and I kept getting told it will be done ASAP. and being the problem gambler I am kept playing heavily and lost it all. One of the deposits I made was for £300 and I when I logged onto my online banking they took another £300 without adding it to the bettings account, I asked them to cancel it and put it back into my credit card account they said they couldnt and that they have credited my bettings account and I have to wager it atleast once to then withdraw it and of course I lost that too.

I am fully aware how stupid this all is but having read some things on here I may be eligle to chargeback those transactions on the grounds that they don't have a uk licence and they offer all the rigged netbet games they shouldn't in the UK.

I have raised a chargeback on all these transactions and received them back into my 2 credit card accounts and raised the dispute with all the information and emails from the curacao commission etc, my question is what are the chances of a successful chargeback on these grounds? they have reversed the transactions but what are the chances of them just readding them once theyve spoken to the merchant and they say i'm bang to rights. Like I say I am very aware I have been stupid and I should write the money off to experience but if I can get the money back and the games I was playing were rigged then it is unfair.

Please be kind :)

Easiest way to dispute the transactions if Credit Card company gets funny is to point out we are not allowed to use Credit Cards for gambling in UK so transactions should not be allowed.

Anyway since noone else has mentioned it do you really think it is a good idea to have Credit Cards with that sort of limit if you cannot control your spending. You did the correct thing by registering for Gamblock. But then went looking for dodgy casinos to play at using your Credit cards.

So what would you have done if the Casino had paid the winnings no Problem. Kept going back till you had maxed out all Credit Cards got yourself deeper in debt and then tried to charge back anyway.

Think now you have managed the Chargeback you should be thinking...
The form takes 5 mins to fill and you get your crime reference number straight away. Then email the banks advising them of the crime reference number to update their case. If they charge back doesn't take long to go back into your account
After doing all you have advised Monzo have immediately closed my account?!!! They don’t believe me clearly and now I’m left with nothing! What on earth am I going to do?

Wipe their ass?! Is that a technical police term for throw it in the bin?! New Day really were reluctant even though I told them they were not licensed they said at first trading standards!
And did New Day not ask if you are in UK why you are using a credit card to gamble in the first place.

So technically every deposit you made can be disputed as it is illegal to gamble on a credit card in UK.

Won't go into why you are playing at dodgy casinos In euros whilst depositing on a normally high interest credit card as that is your choice.

I know I’ve been totally stupid I accept that completely and it’s my fault. No they haven’t asked that at all, I did tell them but they just don’t seem interested. I’m screwed it seems. As for monzo well they clearly can’t be bothered to even answer me now

Most likely as you have mentioned fraud they have decided to close your account. Monzo seem to be one of the worst to deal with these kinds of complaints

It’s bizarre, surely there’s some way I can combat this? If they’d have said no we aren’t going to refund then that’s that but to then close the whole account?! I’d only just moved my salary to be paid into this account as well, now they are not responding at all! Financial ombudsman?

Guess you need to wait from their website can take 2-4 weeks until you can access your money. Taking it to the ombudsman will likely take just as long if not more

How can they not believe you when they have all the evidence? They just don't want to deal with it.. How much did you deposit using the monzo account? What reason did they give for closing it and had u any funds in it when closed?

Well over £1600, I told them the crime reference number and that they aren’t licensed to offer UK players but they just completely fobbed me off saying they are investigating and I’d get an answer in 24hrs….within an hour they closed the account and I’ve tried email all day and now they don’t respond! Fortunately the £150 or so quid is left in there I transferred before they closed it, just as well. Surely this is wrong? How can I make them see sense? I see others with monzo on here got refunded?

Usually reopen a Monzo account within a couple days you mentioned fraud to the customer service team so they have disabled your online account to prevent more fraud If your account is not used for anything illegal it will be reopened

Yeah I have heard monzo refunding before. My bank refunded me within 48 hours when I sent them all the evidence (around 2k few years ago) . I had about 120 dep with Halifax and they wouldn't even entertain it, an I didn't push them as it wasnt that much, but closing the account is a bit extreme/strange. Have they sent you a letter of closure outlining reasons. Are you sure its not just disabled on a temporary basis while they conduct their investigation?

At first they did disable it, but then they closed it completely! I’ve had the text and email confirming so, it’s definitely closed! With no full explanation and they refuse to engage now!

They must have a genuine reason to close your account they don’t just close accounts for no reason it’s been proven many times

Especially when monzo have charged back these payments in the past
Hi Paul,

We're reaching out regarding the recent report you submitted to us.

Unfortunately this isn’t something we’re able to treat as a fraudulent transaction and because of this we won’t be able to reimburse you for these charges.

This decision is based on all of the information we have regarding your account history; as well as the account activity displayed surrounding these transactions and information you have provided to us. Based on this, we do not believe these transactions were authorised by a third party.

If you would like to speak to the merchants directly we can give you the information they will need to be able to locate the payment and you can take things up with them.

That’s what they emailed me, I’m not sure what they are on about with the 3rd party thing, I told them that these transactions were not supposed to be taken due to them having no license to do so, I also gave them the crime reference number and within 10mins it’s closed and I’ve heard nothing since despite trying to reach out to them.

The 3rd party is the payment processor the casino uses to take payments to get round these situations. You have shown the deposits to the casino and monzo can see these payments goin elsewhere.

What do they mean by account activity surrounding these transaction?
Ask them for more details on the merchants they have advised.
What else is in your account history that would lead them to take this decision?

There’s nothing else on the account apart from me paying for everyday food stuff, shopping Amazon etc and I had just asked for my wages to be payed in permanently to monzo also, I’ve tried to contact them but they are completely blanking me

There is your issue they are treating it as fraudulent use of your card by a 3rd party.

So someone has your card details and are using them without your permission. They see you have made the payments yourself and are trying to claim they are unauthorized.

What should have happened is the charges were disputed due to the services received being misleading and not fit for purpose.

So what can I do, they aren’t even responding to me

Write to them by post recorded delivery and make a complaint.

Detail how these should have been chargebacks as the casino is unlicensed in the UK and should not accept deposits from UK players. They should raise any chargeback that has a reasonable chance of succeeding.

Once you receive a final response you can take it to the ombudsman for a decision.

It's going to take a long time so be prepared to wait

Ok that’s brill thanks, I’m also trying to do the same with new day for my credit card, how should I approach it with them? What’s the best thing to say?

Tell them you want to dispute the charges and raise a chargeback.

This is where the email from UKGC helps as you can show they are unlicensed and illegally taking deposits from UK players.

You might have to push them but make clear the service you received was misleading and that is the reason you want to dispute the charges

Ok I’ll do that with them for sure
