Does anyone play less lines than the maximum?

I have started to recently, and have been fairly successful. Although I was playing 9 lines on Loaded yesterday, and would have hit the 5 blonde ladies if I was playing the maximum.

How do you feel about this? Is is totally foolish to play less lines than the maximum or do you feel that is a certain amount of value playing 9, 15 or however many lines you want to play?

Sometimes I feel like I am throwing my money away when I am playing max lines.

Obviously, the progressives are out of the equation.

I always play max lines, although as a rule I try and stay away from the 25 liners, at least until I've built up a bit of a bankroll. But the way my luck is, if I played 24 lines, I'd get five wilds on line 25.

Interesting question. I'm sure there is a reason why this isn't the case, but put a "logic" slant on this.

If you play 25 spins with just one line, you could in theory get the jackpot 25 times. If you play 1 spin with 25 lines, you could only ever get the jackpot once (maybe twice on some of them due to symbol positions).

So...does this not mean that you're highest expectations should come playing 1 line on ANY slot? Yeah boring...but thought provoking.

If my objective was to have fun in as few clicks as possible, maybe after a finger sprain or other clicking related injury, I think I would use the many lines technique; however if I wanted to really put my mouse through the gauntlet, definately the one line.

If I were really drunk, I think I would probly play the one, two or three lines at a time so I would have a chance of recognizing the win when it happened. No sense in hitting a big win and not getting excited about it. Also one, two, or three if I were playing on a cell phone or other mobile technogadget because the screens are so small for the same reason.

If I thought I was particularly lucky one day, I would probably play the one line. After all, if you're lucky, you shouldn't need all those extra chances to win; It'll just happen right?

    -z-

Honestly, I don't play the slots, but you did get me thinking about my choices Simmo. ;)

too deep :eek2: but a very good point. But I think it's the greed factor as well where we play many lines, also imagine missing a big win because we didn't play all the lines, I'd be depressed for days if that happened.

I think 9 lines at max is a good level, I can never remember all 25 win positions anyway

A little de-railed but out here in oz we have slots that pay 253 ways. They look like the standard 9 line slot <eg - Spring Break>.

To receive a full win, you only have to grab a symbol on each reel any position. What I'm saying though is at 253 winning possiblities you can still do your nuts.

Getting back to the topic I saw a granny play 1 line @ 9 coins <5cent x 9> and she cleaned up. Think it comes back down to luck.

253? or 243 Trezz? Either way that would do your nut in ;) I've always avoided playing Australian online casinos cos I assume the symbols would be upside down aswell as if it wasnt confusing enough.

Good post - great question!

I didn't used to like the 20 & 25 liners as they are often moneyeaters.
When I first played Loaded I only used to play 15 lines.

The trouble is, many single 3 or even 4 symbol wins do not repay the cost of your spin  (But of course, you do hit more of them).

I don't think playing only 1 line from 25 makes any sense - 25 spins like this should theoretically return the same as 1 spin of 25 lines.
    Swings & roundabouts.

The answer lies with the bonus rounds (which is what everybody strives for); If it's free-spins then it's obviously better to have max lines even though it costs you more to get there. If it's 'Picks' (e.g. Gift Rap or Pollen Nation) then the number of lines is not so important, so playing fewer lines should give you more features for your money - though obviously the value of the picks varies with the cost amount of lines bet on. Swings & roundabouts again!

Interesting to note however, my only two Jackpots ever (5 wilds) were:-
    Spring Break - Line 3 (of 9)
    Moonshine - Line 9 (of 25)
And a very near miss on Moonshine fun mode )when getting data for my other thread) = Line 6

Maybe just chance... or maybe they are programmed like this... :what:

Well there was that 5 Wilds on Tstruck in the WS thread that was on line 1. But...there was also 5 wilds on Ladies Night if memory serves that was diagonal.

Keep in mind, though, that Tstruck and Ladies Night are 9-line games...wonder if anyone ever had a big win on anything over line 15 on a 20 or 25 line game (any significant win I've ever had has been on line 11 and below)

My 5-Wizard Hit (wilds) during the bonus round on Winning Wizards came in on line #1... straight down the middle. Haven't seen anything the likes of that since! Once in a lifetime prolly! .50 cents total wager paid off for $1,170.00

Personally, I always play the maximum lines. The exception would be when I am down to my last desperate spin and just adjust the line bet to whatever minimal amount of coins I have left. I have actually gotten lucky a couple of times with this method, but not often. Can't seem to bring myself to only play 3, 9, or 15 lines on the 25 line slots as I do tend to see some pretty good wins on the higher lines, especially in the bonus rounds. I would really hate to see winning combinations on the higher lines that I failed to bet.

In fact I think I would be downright mad about it.

I have to think its the "what if" if was was not playing max lines. Its kind of like when I am playing in a land based casino and a slot has kicked my ass and I have hundreds invested in it and just can't afford to play it anymore, I run as far away from that machine so as I don't have to see the next person get a jackpot on my dime.

I had about 0.38 in credits in my account last week. So I played 0.01p 1 line a spin on Loaded. I hit 3 hands, and won under 10p in total with 24 spins.

    LOL!

I dont recommend playing 1 line on a 25 line slot, BUT you never know, it just might come in on line 1!!!

I had 20p in 32Red and hit the feature on Loaded.

I took the 24 spins option....

For some slots like Isis, I have tried doing a 100 spins on 1 line at 1p, this will only cost you a 1 or $1 minus any wins on that line along the way.

Then next 100 spins play 25 lines at 25p, if the bonus round still isn't triggered, jack it up to 25 lines at 100p, if the bonus round still hasn't hit after 300 spins get out!

For Isis I have found this very effective as the 3 birds are coming up between 100-300 for me everytime.

Of cause in the unlikely event it comes up in the first 100 spins, hard luck, but using this tactic this scenario isn't going to happen everytime you play Isis.

Isis seems to me to be a beast of a slot, so some kind of system is needed to stop those long cold spells murdering your bank roll. :D

Your theory is good (I have played like this before). But as you have stated, you could possibly hit the birds playing just the 1 line.

If you had gone 300+ spins without hitting the feature, surely this is a time to stay though? :D

Ooohhh...I think I am being a tad controversial now.

    Hi Cheekymonkey,

In my experience at 300 spins that is the time to go, because as some others have found on here they have gone 600 spins with nothing, then you will find that 2 or 3 lots of free spins all trigger together.

The average I definatly think is 100-300, it is impossible to be more specific than that, but by playing this tactic everytime on Isis, your bankroll stays in good shape.

For 9 liners theres no way I would play like this, because the wins are more frequent. Also I have found the longer it takes you to get to the free spins, the more likely there is another 3 scatters just around the corner, so its always worth spinning another 20 after any feature hits.

But hey Im no expert, but anything that I think helps is always worth a try!

I have just begun to get comfortable with not playing max coins all the time!!

I have thought about this lines issue though. When playing more than one line, there are interdepencencies due to the way the symbols are set on the reels. If a certain line hits, the other lines are are not independent, but will be a result of the symbols above and below.

It might be worthy of analysis to see if there are certain sets of lines that are more favoured over the others. Unfortunately, one cannot choose which lines to play individualy, but only the number of lines to play starting from line 1.
On 5 reel drive there is a 2 line combo with the burgers that pays more than the 5 truckers! It can only hit straight along the bottom, or along the top, anywhere else and the second combo does not sit on a valid winline. This might mean there can be an advantage in missing out certain lines and keeping those lines where such combos can hit.
Perhaps Zoozie could add an option in "that" little Java program to monitor which of the lines are contributing to the payouts, and see if all lines average out over time, or whether some lines are favoured over others.

I can answer this one. It does not matter at all actually, they payout% stays
the same given that the reels positions are random (no weigths). However IF
the reels was weigthed it would mean some lines would be better than others.
But I am certain this is not the case, so do not waste time trying to find them :).

When I am iterating though all combinations every combination will occour excactly once on each line, hence this is the reason the payout is identical no matter how many lines you play.

So it would not change the payout if they made thunderstruck 25-lines actually. (So why does all the MG 5-reels slots not have 25 lines optionally ? Ask MG, I dont know)

I mostly play 5 lines actually, but then at 5 times the bet, so the total bet is equal to 25 lines with single bet. This way the wins will be higher. Even a jackpot win on a 25 line machine can easy be lost within 1 hour play actually.
It is not that exciting to hit 5 ladies with wild on Loaded for 24$ on a 0.25$ bet, but if you play 5 lines*5 bet, it will be 120$ for same 0.25$ bet. That is exciting.

This increases the variance which means I will be further away from the expected loss (both in the positive and negative direction).

Try this for an eye opener:
If you could play Thunderstruck (lets ignore the free spins feature for this) at all 3.5M lines, what would happen?
You would actually get the exact same win every time, which would be 95% of your bet. Now that is a really funny slot, right? NOT!

I just find the 5-lines right for me. Maybe 9 lines, but definately not 25-lines.
