Online Gambling while on vacation

Hi all, I have a friend who is a resident of Canada and is registered on an online casino that is legal in Canada. He is going on vacation abroad and may use a VPN to access the site in Canada. He has already passed all the know your customer identify checks. Would the casino have any issue paying out any winnings if they found out he was playing from abroad? Is it legal to play while on vacation in another country?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

In my experience the restrictions are usually based on citizenship so your guy should be good to go. If he wants to be 100% sure have him email the casino's Support people and tell them of his plans -- they'll almost certainly say "no problem! have a great trip" -- AND KEEP THEIR RESPONSE ON FILE. That way if there's "confusion" later he'll have documentation to CYA, if you'll excuse my French. ;)

I recently went to Hungary om vacation and noticed they were in the restricted countries list of the casino (Bitstarz). I asked support if I, as a Norwegian citizen, was allowed to play while there but they said no, absolutely not, citizenship doesn't matter, restricted is restricted.

Really? I'll have to check that with Olle, the @BitStarz guy. Must say I'm surprised to hear that: in the cases I handle I don't think I've ever had a case fail because of that interpretation of the rules. Live and learn I guess.

.....alternatively they could fulfill the full meaning of the word vacation and have a complete break from online gambling and enjoy their break, then this problem vanishes.

My last holiday (pre covid) gambling of any description was the furthest thing from my mind and extremely refreshing.
,
That what I`m talking about. Maybe better to relax and after continue in habitual mode?

Hi guys,

That sounds a bit strange to me to be honest, but happy you brought it up @SCATT3R as it's probably something
a lot of people have questions about.

If you registered your account with your Norwegian details, went on holiday to Hungary and played whilst away, and came back, I don't really see that as a problem to be fair. You mentioned the word citizen though, so I just want to make sure we get all the details right.

If you're a Norwegian citizen, but you're a resident in Hungary, that might be a bit different. But if you're just there on holiday for a week or two, I don't really think that's the end of the world.

Did you register an account with us? If so, could you pass on your username or something so I can have a look?

Olle

Edit: Found your username and saw the chat you had with the support agent. Looking at your account, you're a verified Norwegian player who's a resident there, and I don't see any problem if you were to play from Hungary whilst you were on vacation. I think this was a better safe than sorry approach from the agent. I'm not sure what the regulator says about this, but I have a hard time seeing this being a problem in your particular case.
