HELP HELP

Interesting last night they had a thing on the news about this - it seems there are people in Canada being hit by ransomware too, a screen pops up saying that you've been found to be in violation of copyright laws or some such and to send $150 to Ukash. It also does something to keep you from being able to boot up in safe mode.

These cybercriminals are inventive, you have to give them that.

I had 2 colleague's who got the same issue, took their laptops home and fixed it.
It is simple if you know how to get rid of the malware.
Malware Bytes is a great tool to help you with this.

Got their laptops unlocked, and got rid of all the malware.
No loss of data.

Great to see all is well and the data was recovered, machines as expensive as they are pale in comparison to the data they hold and in some cases the files are priceless.

Regular backups of files on a machine are so important if you are serious about the data they hold.

I use a quick solution that just updates files updated, renamed, deleted etc. with a simple tool provided in the link below, takes seconds after the initial pairing with an external drive, usb drive etc.

With the safe knowledge that files are backed up externally a nuke and boot of the computer back to factory settings bares no worries

That's a bad link, error 400

Hey Andy,

Was going to take a look at the link you posted and I can't get it to work. Would you please check it out and see if there is something wrong.

I got one of those ransomeware crappy things last week. I managed to kill it with MalwareBytes and Advance Care Pro.

You are correct the link gets truncated when the post is sent, I did not notice that.

Use a search engine and type "SyncToy 2.1" its a great little backup tool from Microsoft.

Once as I said the first backup is done it takes seconds afterwards, so there is no waiting around and gets you into the habit of backing up personal data once or twice a day.

Andy Walker already mentioned the linux boot disk and the USB caddy in https://www.casinomeister.com/forums/threads/58489/. I recommend that you get System Rescue CD from

on a CD if your computer has a CD drive or on a USB stick otherwise and that you learn to use it at least to the extent that you are able to copy your files under Linux in an emergency.

Your daughter must also improve her defences, she needs to get a better anti-virus, and if she has business files on her computer, she really needs to have a proper backup system.
