Whenever I have a discussion with a US person about why they want to own a gun/s and why they need semi-autos or other types that could kill a herd of elephants, the order of reasons is always this:
1. It's my RIGHT under the constitution
2. It's part of my RIGHT to personal FREEDOM
3. Police have them
4. --> 10. {insert other ridiculous reason here}
11. I need it for protection.
'Nuff said.

A big fat zero! I bet a fair number of raped women in Canada wished they had a gun when it happened though! But some selfish people are too afraid of "getting hit by ricochet" so they won't allow the victims to get the tools to defend themselves.
"Get raped and then, if you're still alive, file the police report. No big deal".

I agree a gun would be handy if the rapist approached their victim from the front, introduced themselves as a rapist, and said "You have 30 seconds to remove any gun you might have from your handbag. After that time, I am going to rape you".
I'm not aware of any reported rapes that went down that way. Almost always it is an attack from behind for starters, and given the victim is obviously overpowered they won't be able to even touch their gun let alone fire it....not to mention that it's likely that the perp would grab the gun and possible shoot her with it given his superior strength (if he didn't have that he wouldn't be able to rape her in the first place), and that firing a gun when extremely close to your target can be as harmful to shooter as the target.
It is also interesting to note that the overwhelming majority of people who insist upon having gun/s are male.
Well, that or the woman gets raped then shot by the gun sh'es just been relieved of

general criminals or rapists now? And as Nifty pointed out, was he standing at the door going dingdong, rapist calling, where he ws in the position to have the gun pointed at him?
I can think of plenty of different common scenarios where a gun would have (and did) save a woman from being raped. Guy approaching with a knife, for example.
I'm done with this thread now. You guys have never shot a gun or done any research on this subject, you are arguing over a subject you absolutely don't know and it's pointless.

As I said, the majority of rapes are a perp attacking from BEHIND. The victim doesn't get a chance to retrieve their gun, unless they wear a gunbelt......
How long do you think it takes to unzip a bag AND pull out a gun AND turn off the safety WHILE fighting off an attacker who will probably SEE you going for it and try to STOP you? If it's any more than 2 seconds, it is about as useful as a chocolate spark plug.

Either you know that you're safer with a gun or you don't (because no one took the time to show you how and why). Every gun owner isn't some kind of stupid hillbilly redneck with an IQ in the 2 digits like you want to believe.
No one that is gun educated would believe in their right mind that their wife or daughter is safer unarmed when facing a rapist than armed. Guns are just a tool and, like any tool, it can make your life easier if you know how to use it.
Even if it's true, what about THE MINORITY that CAN be stopped? If you were stuck in such a bad situation, would you not want to have the absolute maximum of options available to you?
Why don't you want the victims to be able to defend themselves? Or at least have a chance? Are you selfish to the point of saying "the hell with the rape victim, what if she can't hit the target that is a few feet away and I get a ricochet in the leg? It will never happen, but it could. Fuck her I'm not taking this chance. No gun for you lady. Get raped."?

He is a man who does not know the meaning of mercy and would not offer it to you, even if he did. They are looking for their next victim. What the hell.....let's get rid of the police and courts and have everyone shoot anyone they suspect of being a criminal. Let's have neighbourhood kangaroo courts and public firing squads in the streets. Who needs 'em right? You and the other "non-cowards" are going to protect everyone! I think taking a civilized country back 200-300 years is a great idea.
What the US population SHOULD be addressing is WHY they think they NEED a gun in the first place. If they spent as much time on that as they do on "protecting their right to bear arms" the country might be in much better shape, and you wouldn't NEED to have a gun. The fact that they don't just proves it is not about "protection" in many cases....some people (men mainly) think it makes their wang bigger, and it grows according to the quantity and quality. Others just want it because "it's their right". As I said earlier, the need for protection hardly ever rates in the top 5 or 10 reasons people give me for insisting on having guns...and this thread is a further example of that.

Ok, I AM stepping out of the thread. Not because I don't feel I have a valid say, right to my opinion or can't back up my words. Rather, when words like coward and selfish are being thrown about, it's becoming personal, and not about one's beliefs but against other people's and their character. My choices don't make me selfish or cowardly, they make me differently opinioned. If I feel like being insulted on a personal level, I'll attend a family dinner.
Here's reality check for you and the other liberals in here: an unarmed 115lbs woman can't do shit against a 220lbs man. That's a fact.
The same 115lbs woman with a 9mm has a hell of better chance to make it. That's also a fact.
Good values are good on paper, but they won't help you when YOU are about to get raped or assaulted.
