I give you the Australian version of snow...

But you can't ski on it, make snowballs with it or let your animals play in it. And you breathe it in at your peril.
How deep is that snow drift? Makes me claustrophobic just to look at it.I also took a walk with the dog, but had to turn back.
I forgot i only cleared half the driveway.

Actually it looks about the same as your pic does.

Wow! Absolutely beautiful.=)
Not sure. It usually dont get that bad where i live.
If you go to the northern parts of Sweden, some winters you may have that amount of snowfall.
Its pretty crazy.
Speaking of crazy. In "Kiruna" wich is about as north as you can go without leaving Sweden, you can stay in an Ice-hotel.
Looks like something out of a disney movie.

Someone come and take the UK climate and switch it with theirs. It's about as interesting as reading a book on variants of the colour magnolia. Rain, 9c, cloudy and grey skies and maybe the odd bit of frost if we're lucky. Grim.
This time of year sucks. Damp, miserable and busy everywhere. Can't go out without fear of someone coughing or sneezing on you and laying you up for a week.
We have exactly the same here now, and its horrible.
Differs a bit each year, but we usually have snow by now and temps around 0 to -10 wich would be sooo much better.
Now it just snows one day for it to melt the next, making everything wet and miserable.
Yeah it's the dampness that is grim. I don't mind cold, bright and frosty weather at all.

Finally some freaking snow!
Now i just need to pray old man winter aint playing jokes and thaws it away tomorrow!
Best time of year to be a chubby beardo!

it's nice to put a face to a name. How do you manage not to get your dinner carpeted over those whiskers? You could go with a nice rafa or ed norton goatee in the summerIt's gandalf's nephew! Only jokingit's nice to put a face to a name. How do you manage not to get your dinner carpeted over those whiskers? You could go with a nice rafa or ed norton goatee in the summer

Oh i dont, i just make sure to clean afterwards.
Plus, the beard needs something to eat aswell.
Gone are the days where a vikings beard could survive with only the blood of ones enemies and the "moisture" of females.
The reason its so hobo-looking is because since last christmas ive been going for a "yeard", or a "one year beard". No shaving or trimming allowed.
Brother did it with me in the beginning, but he caved after only 2 months the little bastard.
. Ill trim it a bit and make it look presentable around christmas time.
Have not cut my hair since either. Usually its in a viking-bun, but when outside and with a hat on i just let it flow free.
Edit: I have actually had somewhat of a goatee. Went as Walter white to a buddys costume party.
Did not really nail the look, but atleast i looked like a criminal.
Thats my passport photo. My costume included glasses and i brought a bunch of meth.

well, ive a hot tub, but there arent any natural springs around hereOh @dionysus
Are saunas a thing in Canada?
I mean like, i understand they may exist there, but is it common to have one?
Sauna+winter = love.
Either saw a hole in the ice for a quick bath, or just roll around in the snow, then back into the smoldering hell that is a sauna.

believe me its nothing special, no bells and whistles, i went for a lower end model; and me being over 6' there ain't much room..but still, I use it every night here in winterland, because well, there's not much else to doGod of wine and bathtubs.
Pretty jealous.![]()

Well this winter is looking dire in terms of cold and snow for the UK and a lot of Europe. We currently have a large swathe of HP to the S and a pretty angry strat/trop PV to the N. This has resulted in a fairly robust +NAO pattern and I'm not seeing an easy route out of it. So, if you're a cold and snow lover, prospects look grim for the foreseeable.
With the ENSO profile being so neutral and a large warm anomaly in the N Pacific, the Pacific sector is doing us no favours in terms of the forcing required to help transform the pattern into something a bit different.
I'm not going to rule out a late season SSW, but cold in March doesn't really float my boat.
The chart below shows the typical +NAO pattern- purples and blues showing low pressure around Greenland and Iceland and high pressure over Europe.

] which might explain why I don't know what those terms in bold mean?

I did Geography at A level and got 'fantastic' grade [ F] which might explain why I don't know what those terms in bold mean?
February tends to be quite a cold month historically but it's not far away now for a drastic change, does HP generally equal cloudless skies in the winter btw?
The turgid damp winter is a bit uninspiring, cold and crisp is better but then the heating bills shoot up.
In my childhood during the early to mid 80's in the SE of england, every winter was cold with deep Snow drifts, gangs of older pupils would roam the playing fields at lunchtime, looking for innocent youngsters minding their own business, to give them a 'frosty'...ah great memories![]()
Haha sorry!
PV= Polar Vortex- this forms every autumn/winter owing to the lack of solar driven insolation over the polar regions. This basically sits as a mass of cold, dense air both at stratospheric level and tropospheric level- it spins anti clockwise and usually keeps cold air bottled up at the higher latitudes and helps to drive our mean westerly (Atlantic) air flow.
A SSW (Sudden Stratospheric Warming) is caused by atmospheric waves which originate at the troposphere (terrestrial level) which are then forced into the stratosphere by large scale terrestrial features like mountain ranges. These waves perturb the stratospheric PV and can then lead to a warming up of the stratospheric level...this can reverse the usual anti clockwise spinning motion of the PV and send it into reverse. This can then allow high pressure rather than low pressure in the polar regions and the cold, dense air can be sent into the mid latitudes i.e Europe, US etc.
NAO= North Atlantic Oscillation. Essentialy a measure of pressure contrast between the Azores and Iceland. +NAO means low pressure Iceland and high pressure Azores, -NAO is the opposite. -NAO usually leads to a cold spell in the UK.
ENSO= El Niño Southern Oscillation

Oh dont get me started on the climate-change people.
Those maniacs!
I hear they want to cut down on pollution, and make the air and water cleaner.
And what next? They expect me to breathe air with less pollution and drink cleaner water?
Sick evil bastards!
And the worst part... Its not even 100% certain we need to cut down on pollution.
What if we make the air&water cleaner, and we didnt even have to do it.
Boy will we look like fools.
Edit: Guess wich side im on, Mack![]()

Thanks Slot5, I haven't quite grasped how all the different factors interact but have you thought about becoming a Geography teacher?
There tends to be less dispute over the natural processes/ science involved in 'geography', but as somebody who studies and understands Meteorology what's your take on the climate change area where there is a bit of debate?
Is it purely man made from carbon emissions or some other cyclical process e.g. from sun activity, perhaps even a mix of the two?
I must be honest, I'm a bit suspicious of the group think I feel is happening, scientists attacked/ losing funding etc.. for daring just to openly question things, the consensus scientific opinion should be able to withstand questioning and different hypotheses proposed, and then when politicians and think tanks start getting involved in the debate and pushing agendas, it doesn't feel me with confidence.
Edit: I don't mind which side of the argument you line up on btw as I'm not au fait with all the science, I just get a gut feeling the public might be getting hoodwinked by various vested interests, and I believe you'll give me an honest opinion that I can rely on more than the emotional stuff from activists![]()
