UK Conservative Party Leadership Election

Truss's plan is shaping up to be a massive government loan TO THE ENERGY COMPANIES, which is then paid back BY THE POPULATION over the next ten years or more. (And rumours abound that her plan only covers the next four months, instead of six, and last time I checked it can still be pretty cold in January and February.)
That will not go down well at all or indeed stave off the growing groundswell of discontent, which will likely explode into civil unrest within the next six months.

One thing I do agree with Corbyn on, is nationalising the energy companies, not the suppliers that provide us with our gas and electricity, but the companies operating in the UK energy fields in the North Sea and then subsequently making a killing by selling to the international market.

Failure for the Truss government to do this, will result in civil disobedience and unrest we have not seen the like of in the UK since the late 70's and early to mid 80's.

Think I am being alarmist?

"Shrink" as it is called in the trade has been increasing for years now.

Not difficult to understand given the fact that supermarkets are getting rid of manned tills and rely on their customers to be the checkout operator.

Details are leaking of Truss's proposed energy price plan and..... it's not looking good.

Remember, Labour's plan was to windfall tax the energy companies and give the money to the population. It was a pretty blunt instrument as it handed cash over to everyone, irrespective of wealth, but it did at least ensure that no one would pay more for their energy for the next six months, and it took excessive profits away from the privatised energy companies that are making out like bandits.

So in essence, the energy companies get given tens of billions pounds of government (taxpayer!) money as a bribe to keep bills fixed in the short term, and then in the medium to long term, everyone in the UK has to pay higher energy bills for a decade or more to pay the bribe back to the government. All those billions the energy companies are making in massive profits and shareholder dividends? They get to keep the lot.

Also, Truss's measure will be inflationary, which means more interest rate rises, which means more misery for millions of people already struggling to get by, and also means more profits for the banks because they hold government debt and the higher interest rates are, the more profits they make on that debt.

So Truss has come out of the gates swinging there. Still, at least she's telling everyone who she is and who she's going to govern for.

Also, no suggestion there will be any help for businesses. At this point all we can hope for is that the leaks are wrong.

I don't really like the sound of her plan, which apparently was the energy firms proposal [the suppliers not producers afaik but could be both] surely it's predicated on prices going back to affordable levels, otherwise we're paying back the loan on top of high continuing energy costs.

Windfall tax to help fund a price cap, plus govt topping it up, and small businesses can apply [not tescos and amazon] for an energy loan which they pay back like a student loan, doesn't sound too wacky and far left given what is occurring, it's what I would call classic mixed market economy, govt intervention when things go awry.

Still waiting for the EU market reform, while germany has announced a raft of measures for their population, something fishy in all of this. In the uk there is an 8% green levy on our bills plus the 5% vat, so that's 13% cream of a growing, out of control price.

Have to agree the "leaked" plan sounds poor, kicking the can down the road and putting the debt onto our future bills. Labour's windfall tax proposal sounds much fairer. As much as I want to choke on those words.

Just watched Truss' speech in Downing Street. Dull material, dull delivery. "Aspiration". "Opportunities". "Tax cuts". "Brilliant Britain". She's no orator.

Today completed a short 12-mile car journey on a safe, pretty straight A road. Went through 3 sets of brand gleaming new average speed cameras. At the end of it all, about a mile on, there was a mobile unit with 3 officers hiding in a hedge. The priorities of this country are completely fucked up.

She most assuredly isn't, the next two years promise boredom and horror in equal measures.

Also quite interesting to see her praise Johnson to the skies again, whilst also pledging to 'get Britain working again', yet Johnson has been PM for the last three years and the Tories in power for twelve, if Britain isn't working, you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to work out who the culprits are.

And to think after your posts on it for the next two years we also have to contend with what the PM says as well.

We all have our crosses to bear!

/gently reminds dunover that when it comes to sexual misconduct, Tory MPs and ministers really are streets ahead of Labour.
/gently reminds ChopleyIOMEU that when it comes to anti-Semitism, Liebore really are EVEN MORE streets ahead of the Tories.

And what about your precious party that is supposedly all about equality?

Female PMs - Tories 3, Liebore NIL.🤭
Female Party leaders - Tories 3, Liebore NIL*🤭

* Before you (attempt to) correct me Mr. Chopley, I am acutely aware that Margaret Beckett and Harriet Harman were party leaders,
but only as acting party leaders, given that they were the deputy leaders who inherited the leadership in the wake of the
death of John Smith and Gordon Brown's resignation after the 2010 GE, respectively. They were never ELECTED as party leaders.

So maybe Tory members are a little more willing to give the top job to a woman than members of the so-called "party of gender equality"?
Hmm, interesting. 🤔

But knowing you, being the self-titled Toxic Wokesel Libtard Snowflake Remoaner Marxist that you are, you will just call the
Tory membership a bunch of racists instead, because they chose a white woman over a non-white male

Sorry, I need to correct myself......

Hrrrmphh...now listen old chap, did you think for one moment we would choose a jug-eared curry artist over a fair Anglo-Saxon? Churchill, Thatcher, Heath, Hague, Johnson, May, MacMillan, Cameron and now Truss all fitted our Aryan preferences. OK, we did have that grey bloke from Brixton once but to be fair he did win an election. And we did have that drip Howard for a year or two, he of the foreskin-less persuasion apparently. That why we can call Labour anti-semites, you see we do strategise and it's not just tea and sandwiches while we do the Telegraph crossword ol' chap.

And we've cleverly made another dusky woman Home Secretary to replace the other rather Priti one and given her the job of trying to dissuade or stop thousands of swarthy foreign types from coming here. So that's it all wrapped up for now, toodle toot!

Webscaz: Tories remain shameless. Labour are now rabid uber liberals. Liberals are still on the fence.

Don't despair: There's always the Monster Raving Loony party.

All good Dave. Still alive. ;)

Going a bit stir crazy watching the tories & labour allow the fuel companies cronies, using the msm, to threaten something like a 4 times price increase, so we happily settle for only double..

Next time I am up in London will, ping you on here, as would be good to catch up :)

Yep we are living in some kind of proverbial s show at the moment. The answer to the energy crisis, certainly in the UK is blatantly obvious, but unless I am wrong, looks like it will be us mere individuals that will be paying for a freeze over the next couple of decades :-s

In the bbc mindset, and probably elsewhere, all the bame folk truss has surrounded herself with are simply brilliant because of their skin colour and deserve glowing write-ups. Whereas they don't actually like the white head girl liz very much at all, that's my impression.

The conservatives are forever trying to outdo labour on the woke credentials and optics these days, that's what it looks like, two prime ministers in a row have given all or most of the top roles to bame MPs, talk about positive discrimination, are we really to believe they were the best candidates amongst hundreds both times, the odds seem to me to be bonanza like for hitting a 10,000x win!

She's making the same exact mistake Bojo did, hiring chums rather than who is best suited for the role, so we will have a f***ing pantomime again. Alas I'm starting to feel the same way about the conservatives as I do the ukgc!

Reads through Chopley's derivative posts, meh, nothing to see here.

See's Mack's Bonanza dig - enraged

Come on man, you're better than that.

Maybe I am different to most, but seriously, colour of skin or ethnicity of any and all of the appointments Truss has made has not even registered on my radar. I don't know why some on social media keep on banging on about it.

The only thing I'm really interested in here is what Truss and her government are actually doing - and by all accounts their first major action will be loading around £100bn of debt onto the taxpayer to fix energy bills, rather than tax some of the £170bn in massive, excess profits that the privatised energy companies are making. (I'm sure it's completely coincidental that Truss used to work for Shell.)

PMQs is looking like it's going to be rather dull going forward, it's no secret that Starmer is hardly a charisma machine, and Truss seems like she'll be a good match for him in the dullness stakes.

Her complete culling of anyone remotely connected to Sunak gives a clear indication of the ideological zeal with which she'll be running things.

I fear we're entering a long, harsh winter.

Well at least she had a proper job during her career. The job at Shell was as a graduate trainee working up to managerial level. Hardly board room material or having any influence within the Company.

Right, so you're saying in one year the UK MARKET has made £170bn profit for UK energy generators, power companies and BP/Shell?

Show me.

Not meaning to get all accountancy but profit means very little, it's an accounting adjustment - you could earn more profit the next year by simply changing how you value assets/depreciate them :p
Add to that that those Companies previously made losses. Should they then go hand in cap to Government and ask for money?
