Latest news now is that a man disguised as a policeofficer is firing at a political gathering. Multiple people shoot.

I live nearby where this political gathering are so unreal. Uncertain if this is connected to the terror attack.

It is confirmed that it was a car bomb. Experts are saying that the bomb was estimated to be around 100 kilo

I was just reading this on my news site - what a tragedy.
Be safe Rainmaker!

Thanks :)

The bomb attack was in Oslo. I live 1 hour from Oslo so that is not close to me. But the shooting incident was on a small island not far from me, about 15 minutes. 5 people are reported dead on that island now so unreal.

Jesus, reports coming in that over 30 youths have been shot dead on Utøya... Not confirmed yet.

Yes, this is an terrible act. I live in a small village and to have terror here is unbelievable. I live next to a fjord (tyrifjorden) and "Utoya" (the island who got attacked by a gunman) is located nearby in the fjord. This place is like the last place you could ever expect any terror.

This picture is from a Norwegian newspaper. It shows the island (victims are censored). So sad. And this was a political youth rally for people aged 14-25 (Our Prime Minister had scheduled to be a part of this rally tomorrow).

This is from The New York Times :

A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, according to Mr. McCants’ translation, apparently referring to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed. It is not uncommon for terrorist groups to advance claims of responsibility for high-profile attacks, only to have the claims prove to be spurious.

From the information that has been released so far I have a gut feeling it is a Timothy Mcveigh-style of attack.

Just speculation on my side, but considering that he was spotted on both places, witness observations claims he was white and nordic looking and was speaking norwegian fluently makes me think this was not Al Qaeda but rather some political fanatic targeting the leading norwegian party and the goverment.

Yes I agree with your thoughts. It may be an attack motivated by internal political issues. The investigation will show. But it also looks strange that one man alone can organize an attack in such a large scale. It will require special explosive and weapon skills.

.

Latest news are that the arrested suspect, a 32 year old Norwegian man is linked with right wing extremism. Armed police forces have entered his apartment tonight and are searching. His apartment is located on the west side of Oslo, a wealthy area.

Some very disturbing reports describes how this man, dressed up in a police uniform came to the island. He gathered young people and kids before he started firing at them.

Thanks Rainm, for real time news. But as you wrote now, it seems to be not a terrorism attack, but an action by an insane man.So it seems there's no danger of similar
However is terrific

Norway stay strong!!!

Yea, Norway stays strong :)

I call this terrorism regardless of the suspects nationality. 17 people are confirmed dead and this number is expected to increase during the night. The attack is also directed against the democracy in Norway.

An attack like this will most likely require substantial resources, so it is too early to say whether this is a result of one mans insanity or if he is backed up by a group/other people.

Any news on whether he was working alone? The news we're watching here is pretty spotty...

EDIT: lol you answered my question before I got it asked!

Yes, I am reading your mind :)

I am following this case on CNN and they had an terror expert on who said it was almost unthinkable to believe that this man was acting alone. But as I said, too early to say.

Current press conference: The police confirms that over 80 people has been killed on the island. Probably mostly young people/kids. Unbelievable.

One of the longest days of my life.. I have been tired for hours, but it is hard to go to sleep after your country goes throug something like this. And now the police have said that atleast 80! youths have been shot dead. I cannot belive that Norway, a peacefull nation have hosted such a monster. What the hell. They where only 14-18 years old. What did they ever do wrong? What is this world coming too...

MY GOD!!!

I saw this story on NineMSN and came straight here as was worried that Rainmaker may have been hurt! :(

Glad you are ok and unharmed!:)

I agree fully with others sentiments....What is the World coming to these days??:(

I worry for the World my children are growing up in....!:(

Condolences to all the families involved.

Yes, as you know, the clock is almost 5AM. But I just can not go to sleep either. I drove by the island just two days ago and to think that 80 young people have been killed there today is unbelievable. It is a very sad day.

- We will find those responsible and hold them accountable, said the Norwegian Prime Minster Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference late Friday.

He also had a message to the people behind the attacks

- You will not destroy us. You will not destroy our democracy or our ideals for a better world.

Terrific terrific , have no words
I've been in Norway with a friend of mine 2 years ago.Oslo is a beautiful ,peaceful, green city.
So sorry

Vi er nær

I see that a person on 2+2 forum has published a picture with the gunman, holding his automatic rifle with bodies lying around and a young boy begging for his life. It really shows the evil of this action, but I do not think it is appropriate to publish it.

Once he is convicted I hope they put this evil bastard - and any conspirators supporting him - away for a long, long, long time....nutcase or not.

I think all civilised and responsible people must feel empathy for Norwegians in the wake of these senseless and brutal acts - I certainly do.

But in seeking to intimidate Norway these fanatics have misjudged the strength of Norwegians as a nation, and I very much doubt that Norwegian resolve and its democracy will be cowed. If anything it will strengthen their determination to do the right thing, imo.

Condolences to all our Norwegian members on these clearly related attacks.

What a senseless and cowardly act.
You have to wonder what goes threw some peoples minds when they do shit like this.

Condolences to the family and friends of those affected, and to our Norwegian friends here on CM stay safe :)

Bit of a derail:
*Geez the picture of the guy involved looked familiar to me.
looked a bit like Julian Assange

Press conference now :

Number of confirmed killed people on the island is now 84 and 7 in Oslo.

The arrested man is this morning officially charged under the Norwegian terrorism act.

By the way, his name is Anders Behring Breivik.

Save your screens for tomorrow.

I know this is a gambler forum, but, only for today I suggest not to post any screen, just a little sign of real compliance.
I don't know where to post this invite.

I don't get it! How can someone that is from Norway and claim to be a Nationalist kill 84 young people from his own country?
I'm glad they don't execute people in Norway. I want him to suffer and rotten in prison for the rest of his life!

Dear Rainmaker,

Just wanted to say your fellow citizens who have been harmed and perished are in my thoughts and prayers. I would dare say this tragedy in your country must be equivalent to our 9-11 experience. The shock and sadness can be overwhelming. Even though you are on the other side of the globe, this horrific incident is felt by us all.

Stay strong and keep faith.

Christine

Yes, this guy is a Christian right right wing extremist. The media have studied his internet movements (facebook, twitter, forums). He has been specially active on a anti-islamic forum.

This is his last twitter message:

"One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests".

The largest newspaper in Norway have published a censored picture that shows this evil man on the island:
