Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

IMO, that is the usual herd behaviour when government handouts are about to be announced. Those shouting loudest will be heard and served first - is the widespread belief.

Every Jim, Jane and Johnny will cry now for assistance from the governments, one of the most typical aspects of socialism. Funny and hypocritical at the same time, that those opposing socialism (which is not communism) most fervently are now those shouting first and loudest for the assistance.

Companies and corporations should be forced to repatriate all cash funds parked in foreign tax havens, sell the shares they bought back in the last 12 months, reduce salaries for top managers by 75% or more, etc. etc before being even considered for government bailouts.

Funny how organisations, who probably spend a high amount on very savvy tax accountants and the like to ‘reduce’ their liability, suddenly do a full pivot and then go Oliver Twist; ‘Please Sir, May have have more?

I think BA have said they don’t ‘support’ it as they have something like 10 billion they can call upon

My Experience about FIrst Days of lockdown (we started last thursday 12th March) with the Supermarkets is avoid to go to the supermarket after 4-5 days, yesterday was the first day I went to the Supermarket because I spoke with some friends and neighbours and they were crowded of crazy people and no Basic foods such as Rice, Milk, eggs were out of stock in just some mins after Supermarkets opens, yesterday I was almost alone in the Supermarket and all basic supplies found with no stress.

Just went to the store myself.
Didnt really stock up on anything, but i needed some tomatoes&ground beef for my dinnerplans.
I always have a shitload of pasta, rice, potatoes etc at home, not due to hoarding, its more about being lazy as hell.

Anyway, you wouldnt know there was a virus going on around here.
Same amount of people there as usual, and nobody seems to be in hoarder-mode.
Things will probably change if/when we see a couple cases here aswell.
But for now its pretty nice that everything seems so normal.

I don't blame Companies taking the hand outs given by Government. The same Government that also interferes into their affairs (blocking of the Sainsbury / Asda merger as an example).

You know i was anti-Glastonbury for a while, thought it was a hipster event (kind of still is) - but learnt the bloke who runs it does it purely non-profit, which is fantastic.

I;d still never go, but its nice all the same. :D
Me and my guy go to Glastonbury every year to get away and be teenagers again :) gonna have to have our own Glastonbury in the back garden a child friendly one Hahahaha

@mack341 A number of you suggested that we reserve an hour in stores for elderly and vulnerable customers. In response to this request, we will set aside the first hour in every supermarket this Thursday 19th March, for elderly and vulnerable customers.

I saw this part and it would be nice but to be honest, when you have an

illness like i do it is hard to relay to people that you are one of the customers they speak of. I gave up long ago because some (not all) people do not understand just because someone doesn't look sick that they are not. I had a cousin who passed away at 21 due to severe heart issues face the same issues as i do. After a major time in my life where i was in hospital for 2 weeks i used a motor cart to buy food. The manager approached me and said that the carts were reserved for people who needed them. I rolled up my sleeve and showed him the IV port also the bandage around my throat from the surgery. I had my coat on and had zipped it to the top because it was winter and it was cold out. He apologized and explained some people play in the carts or use them when they are not needed. Even though i was in no condition to walk or cook meals (the reason i was buying food) i got out of the cart and i finished my shopping. Even if the USA did something similar i would wait in line like everyone else. It gets exhausting explaining why i have handicapped plates and i look well. I have went thru this for many years even having people evil eye me or just go out the way to tell me off. I ignore it most times because at the end of the day i have learned over years to pick my battles. I agree that the elderly should go and be able to do their shopping before everything is gone. Also if someone with an invisible illness can get their shopping done without feeling rushed it would be nice. Kudos if the brits(not sure if this word is correct to use or it is not acceptable so i apologize in advance ) put this in place. Lucky me i caught the store yesterday when the trucks were just coming in and i managed to get milk and bread. I only bought 2 of each trying to be mindful of people like my mom who might need these items. I also bought a bit of meat. ( I am still waiting for my dad to call me and update on my mother's surgery. She was still very sleepy all day yesterday but she seems to be ok for now) .

I did wonder how they're actually going to go about doing it, perhaps have staff stationed at the entrance checking people's age or vulnerability, which isn't defined. Needs to be a manager really, somebody with authority.

Yes it is very difficult for people with invisible illnesses, I think the public in general are getting a bit better to know not to make assumptions, but there are always members of the thicko squad out and about who don't engage brain before speaking.

Quite a bit of good news on the Sun website,if you can believe them.
China has closed the virus hospitals as new cases have virtually stopped.
New and faster testing methods have been produced and progress made with treatments.

Although they managed to start it whatever China had does seems to be working,We should be looking
very closely at how they have tackled it, but it might just be the natural cycle of the virus and they are
months ahead of us.We are still in the very early stages and what we do now is crucial,Dont see
much leadership,Boris would never have won WW2.
I loathe to say but as a Chinese living in Hong Kong, though the infection numbers are down significantly I cannot see how they did much to tackle the rampant virus though they boast about locking down the city of Wuhan(where it originally originated) from spreading the virus. What they dont mention especially the despicable wumao is that 5 million out of the city's population of 11 million escaped to other parts of the globe 1-2 days before the lockdown. Many places, including Hong Kong, had to treat these folks for the virus but in this place alone the infected folks refused to relay their whereabouts since arrival making it difficult to trace people whom they could have infected in the community.

At this point in time, every country should mimic South Korea who suffered an outbreak yet , within weeks, was able to contain the virus through devising a quick method of gauging who were infected. These were then separated from the rest of the community and did a part from halting the spread.

today was errands day; bank, drug store, food shopping

everything..mostly..the same; maybe less people and cars, a few people in masks
shelves were fully stocked but for 2 things:
meats, which is smart, least people are getting food...but
toilet paper..again, every shelf cleared, ffs...again..toilet paper
whack-a-dos

it did really sink in though, as I'm walking along, and people seemed so...reserved...how fragile everything really is, how easily shit could crumble and go so very wrong

We have our first confirmed cases in Kingston. Three unrelated people returned from 3 different international trips. They will only test if you have symptons and have returned from overseas, not the US. I think they are also testing people hospitalized with respiratory illnesses.

I fail to see how shorter hours will help slow spread. Same number of customers, more per store hour, so more crowded. Our buses are running reduced hours, so same issue there.

Kids aren't as prone to developing symptoms from it, so it's not done to protect them as it were. It's to limit the little blighters' social interactions and not inadvertently pass it on to the adult population.

^ those are Boris Johnson's exact words, just watching it live now

All key workers children can still go to school. For example children of police, nhs workers, firefighters etc

Social work is already taking a beating. Was speaking to my pal in one of the local authorities and they’re already down 25% of staff and counting (home carers) Normally they’d go to the private sector but, even before this, they lacked the capacity and now all the other surrounding Authorities are jostling for position for the ones that have any spare capacity.

Must be why all the kids are playing tag and generally annoying me outside the front :-p

Yes, kids play outside here. It is weird.

That's just the local hoodlums. They don't go to school anyway

Just about ready for 12 weeks of isolation, freezer is full, car is full (yep i know there is no petrol shortage, but
anything could happen in the coming weeks),stock of cigs, hand wash coming from Amazon (how much??) Unwanted visitors told to f**k off. Probably the last Tesco order coming Friday.Shotgun cleaned and oiled.
Saturday is day 1, good luck all

Civilization is an agreement to suppress our basest urges in return for others doing the same.

Normally, this is is to everyone's benefit. I don't murder you if you don't murder me, and society functions.

Right now, some people feel their survival is threatened and its every man for himself. That's why we are seeing some socially weird behaviour.

Like, the run on toilet paper. A canary in the coal mine for modern times.

Casa de ternur:

Youtube and Spotify still work.
Beer is available.
Illusions and reality are as inseparatable as they ever were.
Wife still doesn't share my taste of music.
Work laptop in quarantine (put it in the closet).

You wearing your Cosplay outfit?

Okay this must be more serious than i thought as it has actually been the first thing ever that has got Sturgeon doing what she is paid for.

No bitching about Johnson or what the government are planning. Finally saying that Referendum and Party Politics are not important at moment. Actually dong what she is paid to do and trying to look after the people in her country.

Shame it took something like this to happen for her to do her job. But for once it is actually okay listening to her advice and what is happening to the country.

OK - the good news first - the stooopid Eurovision Song Contest has been cancelled this year, sparing us from caterwauling drag queens and wannabees.

Even better, Bumby City and Casualty and DeadEnders will stop filming new episodes.

I am wondering what the street drinkers/alchies/druggies are going to do? With next to no shoppers, who will they beg from? Or shoplift from when stores are shut?

Also, the drug dealers - when non-essential travel is banned, what happens? Do they dress up as mobile pharmacy staff and say to the Police that "We are supplying an essential product to addicts, so let us through"?

Bad news, no AAC in Amsterdam this July. Likely Berlin will be off in November too. Hope the everyone is vaccinated by the time London comes round again next February.

Grimbledon will be off too, so good there.

What are we going to be left with on TV? Aside from news, we'll get re-runs of Bullseye, Steptoe and Son and bloody Crossroads most likely. Then again, we will be spared the crashing music, flashing lights and synchronized dribbling of hysterical TV 'talent' show audiences. A*t & D*c could be compulsorily isolated!

Your messiah listening to experts? That would be a first, after all he knows more than anyone else and is thus the "biggliest" expert of them all.

Like this one:

View attachment 125393

And one week later, Mr T who suddenly discovered the press conference room in the WH, thinking that being there now every day makes him look like he is a leader and in control:

"This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."

Oh the messiah, he knew it all along. TBF, you are the silly one trying to defend the indefensible.

However, in typical Mr T fashion he has now smelled blood that he can get more money to splash around and keep the show going. Just a few weeks ago he blasted House Democrats for saying that his initial proposal for $1.25 Billion to fight the onsetting pandemic was not enough. They gave him $8.3B, plus another $100B from this weekend's legislation.

On top, 0% interest rate, massive intervention by the FED on the repo market plus other monetary stunts and now he's asking for another $1 Trillion..... the "bestest ever" economy surely would not need that kind of bailout, wouldn't it? Mnuchin straightaway scaring people with a projected 20% unemployment rate.

So to take his tweet from above, who's "inflaming the Corona situation"?

Just imagine how this guy managed to wiggle his way through his presidency. He got a $1.5 trillion tax cut that didn't boost the economy at all (average GDP growth is not different to Obama's time) but gave him enough to brag for the last years. The stock market soared because companies were doing massive share buybacks, completely disregarding that the underlying criteria did not change much. If it was built on solid ground, the DOW would not have plunged by as much as it did in the last week.

Now, he's about to get another $1T+ to keep the show going and put more lipstick on the pig.

No doubt, he will tell everyone what a great job he's done over and over and over and over and over again.

Why you trying to turn this in to a T thread?

Had an email from sainsbury's ceo Mike coupe, thought it might be useful info to share for brits in case they haven't seen it elsewhere:

A number of you suggested that we reserve an hour in stores for elderly and vulnerable customers. In response to this request, we will set aside the first hour in every supermarket this Thursday 19th March, for elderly and vulnerable customers. I hope that you can respect this decision and will work with us as we try our best to help those that need it the most. If you or an elderly family member, friend or neighbour would like to shop during this hour, please check online for your local supermarket opening hours.

We will also help elderly and vulnerable customers access food online. From Monday 23rd March, our online customers who are over 70 years of age or have a disability will have priority access to online delivery slots. We will contact these customers in the coming days with more details.

For any online customer who can travel to our stores, from Monday 23rd March, we will operate an expanded 'click and collect' service. We are significantly increasing the number of collection sites across the country over the coming days in preparation for this. Customers can place their order online as usual and pick it up from a collection point in the store car park. We believe this will also work for people who are self-isolating.

To help us get more essential items onto the shelves, from this Thursday 19th March, we will be closing our cafes and our meat, fish and pizza counters in supermarkets. This means we can free up warehouse and lorry capacity for products that customers really need. It will also free up time for our store colleagues to focus on keeping the shelves as well stocked as possible.

I mentioned last week that we had put limits on a very small number of products. Following feedback from our customers and from our store colleagues, we have decided to put restrictions on a larger number of products. From tomorrow, Wednesday 18th March, customers will be able to buy a maximum of three of any grocery product and a maximum of two on the most popular products including toilet paper, soap and UHT milk. We have enough food coming into the system, but are limiting sales so that it stays on shelves for longer and can be bought by a larger numbers of customers.

They started reserving the first hour for the elderly this morning here plus they're closing 3 hours early at the market chain at the end of my street.

only thing stressing me is my job security rest i can deal with. only so long they can keep everything closed down as it will put people out of work for good.

Same here mate, along with the 'idiot' factor who will eventually turn to petty (or even larger scale) crime to secure their loo roll and bread etc

I work P/T split shifts in our local Pharmacy, no chance of losing work their most would think, if anything a massive surge in demand and therefore working hours...

Sadly not, most of the surgeries I visit for the paperwork part of my job are locked door policy now and not taking requests nor queries so work lost there. add to that my late afternoon prescription deliveries would go through the roof, problem is we cannot source the meds from the suppliers for now

Worrying times, especially for a paranoid git like me

Had the daughter perform her ‘corona dance’ to perfection, she’s got her wish.
the shops in Middlesbrough where pretty much cleared of essentials by mindless idiots, was enough however left to ensure a 2 pork steak dinner, roast veg and carrot and swede mash and Yorkshire puds was on the menu tonight.
loads of wine and beer also, toilet rolls I don’t care about, have enough for enough shits to tide me over, should the nose run again a ripped up t shirt will do, bleach after use and repeat.
work wise is shit, been told at least a month until I’m required offshore, shit happens.
have a tax rebate due that will tide me over and a few quid in the bank.
Walking sox as normal but people seem somewhat weird as expected when I start to converse.
this will go to a lockdown, it’s happening bit by bit.
mother has been told to work from home, over the moon as she can smoke in her kitchen and drink wine via a laptop pretending she cares about renewals and insurance.
the gov also seem to be doing all they can, tried to get painkillers for my arm and back today, after 3 hours I gave up and went to non pharmacy for said drugs.
it’ll get worse, but it’s not the end of days.

Finland:

Borders closed.
Schools closed.
Early childhood education units remain open.
Restricted distribution of drugs and medical supplies.
Gatherings of 10 people or more prohibited.
Everyone over 70 encouraged to self quarantine.

We know.
But have you guys changed anything to stop the spread of the virus?

Is the takeaway shop shut tonight :eek2:
No all open mate. Need vegetables and proper food to keep my strength up should this silly virus rear its ugly head.
that said tomorrow I’ll be getting a pizza and kebab, this roast dinner lark on a weds evening just isn’t cricket...

There's posts on twitter about some sort of lockdown of london, possibly involving the army though that is being denied.

It’ll happen.
you get trained for such, it’ll happen 110%.
It’s London that’s a problem as many are not grasping the situation.
Police already have new powers.
Also avoid Facebook and Twitter, full of nonsense.
but the lockdown is a reality, it’ll be here before Monday.
it’s a bit by bit approach.

Can't really flipping blame them. It's true, we are regional leaders in this affair

Going gym tomorrow, but will be speed-walking back instead of bussing it. Anyone ever been on a real London bus? It's like a sardine tin of disease and depravity, and that's before Covid-19

Wonder why London has so many cases........................................................................

Also if London is on lockdown how are people suppose to get to work, they going to be snatched off the streets as they try to get to work!
