Only recently did Wikipedia get to the bottom of it - kinda made you wonder what they were hiding. Well, finally we know. It is run by a husband and wife team - that's right, no big office of investigators and researchers, no team of lawyers. It's just a mom-and pop operation that began as a hobby. David and Barbara Mikkelson in the San Fernando Valley of California started the website about 13 years ago - and they have no formal background or experience in investigative research. After a few years it gained popularity believing it to be unbiased and neutral, but over the past couple of years people started asking questions who was behind it and did they have a selfish motivation?

claiming to have the bottom line facts to certain questions or issue when in fact they have been proven wrong. Also, there were criticisms the Mikkelsons were not really investigating and getting to the 'true' bottom of various issues.

A few months ago, when my State Farm agent Bud Gregg in Mandeville hoisted a political sign referencing Barack Obama and made a big splash across the internet, 'supposedly' the Mikkelsons claim to have researched this issue before posting their findings on

. In their statement they claimed the corporate office of State Farm pressured Gregg into taking down the sign, when in fact nothing of the sort 'ever' took place. I personally contacted David Mikkelson (and he replied back to me) thinking he would want to get to the bottom of this and I gave him Bud Gregg's contact phone numbers - and Bud was going to give him phone numbers to the big exec's at State Farm in Illinois who would have been willing to speak with him about it. He never called Bud. In fact, I learned from Bud Gregg no one fromhttp://www.snopes.com/ ever contacted anyone with State Farm. Yet,

My first comment is not to give grief to felicie, but to point out something that people do here all too often...and that is to post things without giving the source, making it seem that the content of the post is the poster's own words.

I received this piece in an email. Google the first few sentences and you get pages and pages of links to right wing, Bircher, birther, and supremacist websites. That in itself doesn't make the piece untrue. However, the piece is a half-assed attempt at best. It has always been common knowledge that Snopes is run by the Mikkelsons. They've been continuously interviewed in print, web, and TV since Snopes' inception. They're both very qualified to do what they do. Both are experts in folklore, and both work the Snopes site full time. David is an Independant and was once a Republican, and Barbara is a Canadian citizen, so can't vote in the US. FactCheck tested Snopes responses to political rumors about Palin and Bush and Obama and found NO BIAS. But I'm sure someone can find a trumped up reason why FactCheck is a commie plot.

As far as the State Farm stuff...nope, not quite. The piece says that
In their statement they claimed the corporate office of State Farm pressured Gregg into taking down the sign, when in fact nothing of the sort 'ever' took place.
In fact, that's NOT what Snopes says...
the company had requested the sign be removed as soon as they became aware of it because the sign was inconsistant with State Farm's policy of not endorsing candidates or taking sides in political campaigns.

And who is this mythical email writer who called State Farm's offices? What is his/her name? And if he/she is going to outright lie about the Mikkelson's not being out in the open, and lie about what is actually written in the Snopes actual article, why on earth should we believe there was ever a phone call?

I think I'm safe in predicting that some people are going to point to the original post in this thread and have an "AHA!" moment, despite my post. But, I'll get over it.;)

Aha, Swampy!!

What can I say? No matter the truth, folks will try to deny it. Even when it is irrevocably proven, they just stick their heads deeper into the sand.

Damn, this life is quite a ride, eh?

Thanks Swampy....

For all those who don't like Snopes... that's fine... there are other places to check/verify all the spam/hoaxes/half truth crap that fill our inboxes under the guise of 'information'...

I used to like urban legends... which has lost it's 'zip' since being taken over by about.com... but there are others... just google, fer craps sakes, before forwarding/sharing and adding to the garbage in my (and everyone's) inbox. :D

Why go all the way to snopes when we can just come here for the answers to everything. :notworthy
And also you can ask the king himself of Snopes GM (GrandMaster) for an answer.
He is very good in his findings.
