Hey,

I was just wondering - are these slots direct clones of each other, except for the graphics and the order in which you unlock the bonus features, or is one higher variance than the other?

No, they are definitely NOT clones.
For starters the reel strips have clearly different patterns (apart from different symbols), 5 wilds pays x1500 on IR, but only x1000 on TS2, and the free-spin features are slightly different.
Also, on IR it seems (from my own play and all the screenshots I've seen) that you are slightly more likely to get more reels turn wild than on TS2.

My gut feeling is that TR2 is just a tiny fraction higher variance than IR - but certainly there's not MUCH difference between them.

IR is TS2 on steroids (higher variance).
Highest line pay on IR is 1500 coins vs 1000 coins on TS2 so the jackpot on IR is 3.64M coins while it's "only" 2.43M on TS2.

I would class IM higher variance than TS2 - The Hit potential seems to be better with IM.... I used to be a HUGE Ts2 fan at times maxing it on $15 a spin. I never hit anything on that Slot that was worth while.

Someone here at CM said the way to think of IR/TS2 is as 'hidden progressives' - in that the maximum pays are so huge and have to be accounted for as part of the RTP, same as a normal progressive.

It makes no difference since a chunk of the RTP is "reserved" for big wins and the higher the potential big win, the higher the %. (ie: the big wins NEED to happen to reach the TRTP on the long run).

A progressive works the exact same except that sometimes they tell you upfront what that % is.

Yeah but the point is that the biggest wins on IR/TS2 are so big that they have a negative effect on the way the slot plays the rest of the time, same as a progressive.

I think on IR the fact that the Wilds are next to the high pay symbols indicates it's higher variance than TS2. But one of the clever things about these games IMO is the way you can select a free spin feature that alters the variance slightly.

(Aside: I've still yet to have more than 2 reels wild on either of them! Grrr!)

It doesn't make any difference which feature you're choosing since the slot isn't compensated and you have to unlock the features. Your chances to win any amount during the free spins have to be the same regardless of the feature.

This is similar to some other slots that have multi-parts features (e.g. The Argyle Open)

Yes you are right that it doesn't change the RTP but variance doesn't change the RTP either, it simply refers to the volatility.
