Hello !

I'm from Latvia and I am very old man.
I'm on pension now and trying to earn some extra money (pensions are small in our country).
So I decided to learn Holdem and earn some incom.

At the moment I have skimmed some poker books (Phil Hellmuth's and some more) and are playing micro stakes at pokerstars for a week. I'm loosing less than when I started, but I also realised that at pokerstars there are more sharks than ordinary docile fishes. That is good for learning but bad for bankroll.

So now I try to find poker room(s) with more fish.
And learn, learn, learn (as said great Lenin ;)

Unless you happen to have a large bankroll you can afford to lose (and from your post it appears you don't), poker, or any gambling really, is a terrible way to make money, all but for the rarest of players, and definitely, not someone new to it. If at all, you should consider playing for fun, learn and master the ropes, then play if it's truly something you can afford to do.
Regardless, gl and welcome

What Dionysus said is spot on.
Anyone can learn to play poker, but only a very small number will become good enough to win consistently. It's VERY unlikely you (or I!) will ever be one of them.
So please take care and have fun but NEVER deposit any money you are not fully prepared to lose.

Welcome to the forum!

Are you guys talking from your experience ?

If so, I would be glad to hear more.

As I said, I have very little experience in poker, so I base my reasoning more on logic.

1) why is it necessary to have large bankroll to succeed ?
IMO with large bankroll you can simply loose large sums easy.

2) if I would be number 10 strongest player in the world and be playing with 9 strongest guys at one table, I would loose in the long run.
But if I would be number 10 weakest player in the world and be playing with 9 guys who plays even worse than me, I would win at the end (theoretically).
So why it's not possible to master a decent skill level and find tables with weaker oponents ?
IMO, I'm not overly stupid, experience shows that I can master most mental skills (if I really want) to the level well above average.

3) I've lost about 5$ first week in pokerstars and I learned something from every lost penny. That would make 20$ a month and I definitely can afford that. I can continue in such way until I die or until I master my poker skills to the needed level. I have plenty of time.

If I am missing something in my reasonong, I would be happy to hear from you.

hey all

bankrollmanagement is the key for a sucessfull poker player.
i guess you play nl holdem so i would recommend you always have at least 30x buy in for your stake.
if you win and have the bankroll for 30x the next level move up if you loose move down the stake.
i would stay at pokerstars because the rake is the lowest in the industry and there are more then enough bad players here.
ipoker and ongame network have a lot of bot players at mikrostakes and the customer support is not always the best.
do not worry because of your age. if you are prepared to invest a lot of time in this game and consider the basic rules you will make a profit in this game.

Boom

Thanks for your encouragement !

I'm playing Limit Holdem, haven't enough guts to go "All In" with real money. I am toying with NL in freeroll tournaments and, off course, it's much more exciting, but even there I am afraid to put all in with no nut cards.

In limit holdem, if I have discipline and patience to wait for premium cards (which most beginners haven't, mee too at the begining) I can win, but very slowly :(. And it is boring. And I loose control some times and play loose when I see how other guys win with trash cards. And pay for it for sure ;)

Also there are plenty of multitasking players, who have patience too and more experience :(
So I am learning as madman to be able to play more hands.

limit holdem is also my main game for many years.
for you as a beginner i would play only full ring tables 9 players till you get a feel for it.play your premium hands and do not bluff.
here you always can ad 1 more table to your comfort zone.
at shorthanded tables 6 players you simply can not wait for premium cards to win because you pay the blinds to often.
you have to play a lot of more hands here.
i would google something like orc (open raising chart) and study it.
for bankrollmanagement for limit holdem it is advised to always have 300x you big blind

after some time you have to play 6 handed because there is the money and the most bad players.
you can start with 2-4 cent and look how it feels for you.
do not hesitate to post your experience or questions you have..
its a nice topic for me to get warmed up at this forum lol
