General Election 2024 Thread

I watched the leader debate thingy last night. The format was far better this time around, by not pitting them against each other, and having Beth Rigby and then the audience ask questions and allow a decent amount of time for answers, we got a better feel for them both.

Starmer was solid if not incredible, Sunak looks like he's just had enough of the whole thing and can't wait for it all to be over so he can get back to enjoying being one of the richest people in the UK rather than faffing about with this whole politics affair.

I enjoy Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell's political analysis. Rory Stewart of course being one of those Tory MPs who left in disgust during the Johnson era. I remember watching the Tory leader debate before Johnson was crowned and thinking that Stewart was by far the most impressive, and also that he'd make a serious and decent Prime Minister.

I also thought there was no way the Tory faithful would select him as leader, which of course is what came to pass and Johnson then proceeded to blow up the country, and then the same Tory faithful voted in Truss as leader. LOL.

Watching the The Torygraph completely lose its shit is becoming a full time occupation, it's like they've got some sort of internal competition to see who can write the most deranged headline.

Either that or they've just let Chat-GPT loose with the prompt to, 'Imagine the Daily Mail has gone mad'.

Mind you, Labour are boxing themselves in on so many corners now, the latest one being a commitment not to revisit Council Tax bandings, that I fear the biggest winner after five years of Labour government may be disappointment.

Revisiting the tax bandings is so unpopular that if he committed to doing it now, ahead of the vote, people would swing back to the tories.

As you've said yourself Chopley iirc the tories have raised the tax take to the highest levels for a very long time, how that money is being used is the problem.

Paying for people, who have no right to be here, to be put up in hotels is a huge drain on the public purse.

I'm Reform for Life after watching this. Just common sense and looking after the British people. Boot out the boat scroungers.

I mean, this is literally the same guy that totally blagged everyone about Brexit and saying it would fix this problem, now coming back for more and insisting that this time his new idea will totally fix it.

It's like an online casino being caught running dodgy slots and relaunching themselves a few years later as THE TOTALLY NOT DODGY CASINO THIS TIME OUR SLOTS ARE LEGIT HONEST MATE and you're falling over yourself to start depositing there.

Anyway, it's all good, every vote for Reform splits the right wing vote and installs Labour with an even more massive majority - so have at it!

Crazy how the marks fall for the reform con artists again with their history, the media are playing a part though, they never call him out on it, wanting to privatise the NHS should have been the end of him but still they lap it up, mind boggling. Don't worry though I'm sure a couple of privately educated millionaires will sort inequity.

Obviously everyone should cast their vote as they see fit, and I'm more than happy to see the right wing vote split between the Tories and Reform, especially as the electorate at large looks ready to engage in mass tactical voting all over the country just to boot an incumbent Tory out - however - it really does need to be noted what an absolute fucking conman and grifter Farage is.

The embedded video isn't even 90 seconds long, and it tells you everything you need to know about his latest grift.

There has been no brexit yet, we are still in the EU in all but name. 100,000s of their regulations, their ECHR, their illegal migrants pouring in to the country and the NI debacle to state just a few things.

Reform for me hits the spot, god this country needs them right now.

'The beatings will continue until morale improves'.

If you think that more of what Farage is peddling is the answer, after what has happened to the UK thanks to Brexit since 2016, and especially since 2020 when we came out of transition, then sure, vote Reform.

Their economic policy has a hole in it at least £50bn wide, and Farage himself has today said that they know they won't have to actually deliver anything they're promising because they won't be in government (see below).

On the ECHR, one of the biggest rounds of applause in the last election debate was when Starmer said unequivocally that he wouldn't take the UK out of the ECHR, because the penny has dropped on that one, people have realised that it would mean taking away their own human rights.

It's like when Priti Patel boasted she'd ended freedom of movement, and now as all Brits have found out since then, that also meant that their freedom of movement has been ended too - other countries have borders as well.

They found about £1000bn for convid, £50bn is nothing.

If the 'conservative' govt had put Farage in charge of the brexit process, then it would be a different argument.

But he's had less influence on how things have been managed, post 2016, than even labour MPs, at least they've had the opportunity to ask questions and request info in the hoc re brexit policy/implementation.

Ahhhh dear old Boris, hard to imagine he turned out to be an incredibly shit Prime Minister.

He 'Got Brexit Done' so well that absolutely everyone wants to have nothing to do with how it eventually turned out, (including Farage who has decided that there's some mileage in BREXIT THE REVENGE, THIS TIME IT'S THE ECHR), and it's completely destroyed the Conservative Party.

Still, at least he looks like he's still enjoying lots of rich food and drink.

He is now mRNA vaccine injured, like millions are!

There's something quite desperate about all this now, apparently Johnson is going to be doing loads of these to energise (lol) Tory supporters on a seat by seat basis, blithering on about wokery and 'kowtowing to the European Union', just right wing Chat-GPT word salad. They don't have anything else, they're staring down the barrel of electoral extinction and all they can do is wheel out the worst Prime Minister this country has ever had to spout meaningless bollocks.

And here's David Cameron saying.... erm..... things. None of it makes any sense, until you consider that they're going into this general election against the backdrop of having clearly left the UK in a far worse state than when they came into power in 2010.

Fourteen years in power and this is all they've got.

They're going to get wiped out. And they deserve it.

That little sliver at the bottom of the graph is the people who have 'no right to be here', the rest of it is legal, UK government sanctioned immigration.

According to several sites, the annual cost for their hotel accommodation is in the billions.

I disagree with 99 % of the 'legal' ones too, this is probably the main reason the Tories face a wipeout.

The only folk we should give a chance to live here, are the highly skilled where we have a gap we simply cannot fill with indigenous applicants, and genuine asylum seekers, (like the translators the British army used in the ME), we've always taken in these types, they tend to be professionals whose govt have taken a very strong dislike to for political reasons.

If labour's immigration figures are similar to the Tories there'll be a 1 term govt. We were a diverse enough country in the 1980s, nothing has been gained by the more open door policy since.

I am in favour of better, fairer trade with the less developed countries, plus help them with things like clean water, that way folk are going to be more inclined to live where they're born and in connection to their ancestry/culture.

This Tweet is still up nearly six hours after he posted it.

The UK is not a member of the World Economic Forum.

(If anyone's seen any interviews with Farage over the last few days, they'll have seen him absolutely crumble under any sort of scrutiny. The man does not like being asked actual questions.)

First search return of googling 'wef and uk govt':

"Speaking at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, the Business Secretary confirmed the UK would establish a new partnership with the World Economic Forum Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, based in San Francisco, to develop future regulation which benefits business and consumers."

A Partnership is even stronger than membership.

You're going to need a bigger ship to take Nigel down! 😎

He's not perfect and is basically running a one man show, but has definitely sparked this election into life. Somebody at last voicing the concerns of the quiet majority, he makes starmer and sunak look like cardboard cutouts.

Brexit shock round 2 People are angry, and Reform hits the spot for both pissed Tories and Labour leavers.

Coupled with the Free Palestine mob refusing to support Labour, WEF loving Starmer could be in real trouble.

If there is a God, reform will limit Starmer or even produce a reform miracle win.

BIB - they have got more chance of winning the lottery than that ever happening anytime in the distant future. Yes they might steal some votes from Labour but not as many as they are stealing from the Tories, also to note the latest poll from YouGov has projected that Reform will finally win some seats but only 4 or 5 and yes Nigel the clown will finally be elected to Parliament to cause more mayhem for the tories.

I predict the clown will once elected either force conservatives to let him in and elect him leader or he will just slowly destroy the tories until reform are the second largest party in the UK.

But the logical scenario is that he will get leader of tories and merge reform into the tories and then rename the conservatives. That will then mean the conservatives will be a far right party what ever the new name will be. This is the end of the tory party as it has been in nearly 200 years. What is happening in the UK is a seismic shift and what the tories have done the last 14 years has ruined this country and people have not forgotten what they did. Especially the Austerity and the shit that happened during covid. Killing the NHS. Hundreds of thousands of people have died because of how poorly they handled covid and how poorly they ran the NHS and also how people killed themselves because of the austerity on the benefit system. Then not forgetting the funerals and the lockdown party scandal.

So yeah people do not forget but the conservatives have a lot of blood on their hands. Forgot to mention the people dying while waiting for cancer treatment or other life saving treatment or transplants etc.

The tories are 100% finished.

My prediction is that they will get around 70seats. Reform might grab more than 4 or 5 seats. They might if they are lucky get about 10 at max. But first pass the post system makes it impossible to compete with Labour and lib dems in terms of vote share.

I am lib dem supporter, I was going to lend Labour my vote but now I have decided to vote Green.

It will say something if labour get a 200 seat majority with similar numbers to corbyn's attempt.

I bet the recent arrivals will be receiving free dentistry and be at the front of any nhs queue, while the elderly who've paid in all their lives endure toothache and waiting hrs in the A&E.

Because if they don't the legal aid lawyers will put in a claim for damages.

I'd love to hear from the left leaning how to solve the rationing of public services without addressing immigration, because currently the population and demand on public services grows every year.

When you didnt think the Tories could get much lower, Sky news reports that the gambling commision is
investigating bets placed on the election date by a number of conservative candidates.
This shower of shit is unbelievable.
Alas they haven't been paid yet. The KYC and affordability checks are still ongoing.....

OK I've just checked to be absolutely sure mack and that's not what the word 'majority' means. (Quiet or otherwise.)

Reform's support are annoyed old people who want 'more Brexit' (SMASH THE ECHR!) and more anti-immigrant rhetoric, and are unprepared to even remotely admit that Brexit was a terrible mistake. Statistics such as immigrants make up 5% of the population but 10% of doctors are of little interest to them.

A LOT of them arrive with pre-existing conditions and dental issues, which of course are promptly treated by our NHS.

For some reason a lot of the child migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh,.India arrive with untreated crooked teeth so are straight to the front of a long British queue for orthodontic treatment costing thousands.

Are all the ones voting for reform type parties in Europe, especially France, annoyed old people also?

We gave the Tories a decent majority to get brexit done, and in return they gave us a car crash and 'we don't know what to do' excuses.

In one way they should never have given us a referendum if they weren't prepared to engage fully with a leave outcome.

Now they've shown their incompetence and double-dealing wasn't a one-off as they flood the country with unskilled immigrants, costing us a small fortune and storing up more problems for our future.

He’s a fascist. A conman. And he’s leading a band of fascists, bigots and conmen.

And people keep falling for it because occasionally he gets a picture taken of him holding a pint in a Sam Smiths pub.

And he’s only gone into this election because the orange fascist in America didn’t want his “help”.

Bloody hell you make Chopley sound like a centrist 😎

Farage is basically an 80s conservative, plenty of labour voters are also giving him a hearing.

No, really, he’s a fascist. Dress it up in whatever terms you want, but it doesn’t change the facts. He is far right. The only difference between him and Are Tommeh is that Nigel doesn’t say the quiet bits loud.

It's not Fascist to want your country to have control of its borders and to put a halt to the population explosion.

Demonising migrants? People of colour? Minorities generally? Pretty fascistic.

Migration is absolutely nothing like the scale of a problem the big parties and the bigots would have us believe. And even if it were - people deserve to live somewhere safe. Break up the criminal gangs, fine. But if you believe that the right would stop at that, you’re living in cloud cuckoo land.

850 coming over in boats yesterday is not a big scale problem ??,have you any idea what that is costing the country
There will be over a thousand a day next week with the fine weather and scaremongering by the trafficers
about the right wing shift in Europe.

They’re just people looking for a better life. Stop the criminal gangs by all means. But I see no problem with letting people who want to migrate here to work and be with their families and friends to be allowed to do so.

Key word - people. I’m sick of the demonising, dehumanising language that is used to describe people.

To add - stats.

In the year ending March 2024, 31,079 people arrived by small boats, 31% fewer than in the year ending March 2023 (45,019) (and 32% fewer than the peak of 45,774 in 2022).

You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

So yes, that’s a big number on its own. But in terms of overall population? 0.0457% of people in the UK arrived illegally.

You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

You’ve more chance of getting all the top symbols on Book Of Dead at William Hill than bumping into an illegal migrant. Probably. This bit is unsourced.

Essentially - illegal migration shouldn’t happen, should be solved, but the scale is clickbait used by the far-right to “other” people and distract from other more pressing issues that would cost those funding them money.

The problem is they get better treated than the people that have stayed here all their life's.

Stay in a city like Glasgow and see what i mean. Stay in an area all your life and try renting a house or moving to a better one. You get told you do not qualify. Then you see all the new builds getting immigrants moved into them and given everything.

Cost of living crisis and people are struggling to survive. Working all their life's trying to survive and can't even get a decent house or repairs done.

Then they watch people arrive in the country and moved Into their area. Those people then get best of houses and everything supplied. From new kitchen suites with best of washing machines and fridge freezers to brand new tvs beds everything you could need. Christ even supply all the basic things like tin openers.

They also get their electricity and gas paid so no need to worry about fuel bills. Get benefits and food free bus travel you name it. Taxis provided for appointments. All needing paid for interpreters as no interest in learning basic English. Get moved to top of waiting lists for dentists and doctors. Half them are ignorant , have absolutely no manners and do not Try to Integrate into society . Then they have the cheek to complain that they do not get enough. Their houses are not big enough. Majority will never look for work. They are a drain on resources and costing a fortune nothing else they provide nothing in return.

Yeah call me a bigot which I am not I am a working class man who has provided for his family all his life and watch as these people move in and are treated better than the people that have stayed here all their lives.

And they can be abusive and damn right ignorant. Watch the old lady try get on a bus and they just push her out the road. They go into shops and abuse staff yet anyone says anything they play the race card.

Sorry but people have had enough. It is not a minority and main reason Brexit took place in first place. The reason people are looking at parties like reform is because they have had enough and know the big parties are doing nothing. Same as across Europe people are changing how they vote.

This does not make people racist. I am British and should be proud to feel British not made to feel like the minority in my own country. Where you can not say anything that might offend and everything is getting changed . Way I look to it is if I go to another country they will expect me to follow their rules. Not change them to suit me in case I get offended .

Well why aren't their own countries safe?

I think most of us are getting a pretty clear idea of who is and who isn't living in cloud cuckoo land around here.

Often those countries aren’t safe because they’ve been wildly destabilised by, well, the UK and US.

Doesn’t matter these days. Just change the law to say a country is safe and sod the evidence. That’s the right-wing way.

Well I don't totally disagree with your first point, libya being a prime example, that included europe/nato as well.

But overall dozens of countries wouldn't meet the definition of safe, not only in africa but central and S.america, they can't all move to here and Europe.

It's destabilising us and our general culture and standard of living - access to public services being key in the uk. In effect taking from the indigenous residents (who are not particularly well off) to give to foreign born migrants.

I know we'll never agree on this so will leave it there. 😎

The term 'far right' is itself grossly inaccurate and scaremonering. As we cram more and more of the world's unwanted into these islands, build over more green fields, compromise security, saturate public services and reduce our GDP per head, it's the people in working class areas who suffer the most. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but those people are in the main not traditional supporters of the blue, but the red.

The term is simply coined to demonise those who dare to object to the colonisation of their areas, the crime, disorder and decay it brings. It's the same in most other European countries.

The term has connotations to fascism so like the oft-misused word 'racist' it's used to lazily avoid dialogue and discussion regarding a very serious issue which is and will continue to have appalling consequences further down the line. Of course, your politicians can afford to avail themselves of detachment from all this, screw your average John Smith.

So the neo marxists urge us to look at history when people support 'far right' parties. Perhaps they should refer to history themselves when traditional populations find themselves unwillingly colonised and controlled by outsiders, as the fallout is never pleasant.

It's not Fascist to want your country to have control of its borders and to put a halt to the population explosion.

Immigration is not even the biggest damn issue. Only far right clowns make it so it is because that is their number 1 priority because they are racists and they blame immigrants for every thing wrong in this country full stop.

It is fucking scary that far right views are now mainstream media all mainly due to Nigel the clown Farage and because GBNews are biased and employ and support reform party members and views. That channel should be shut down.

Not just the UK but other countries as well there is a huge surge in popularity for the far right and that only helps the likes of Putin/Kim/Trump and any other ass licker leaders who support them.

The simple fact is, if this continues we will be headed for a 3rd world war. That is why its a must to get rid of the far right views completely from the mainstream media and ban media outlets from even reporting them. You may say that is extreme and radical and far left view well no its not. I am not far left, I am left of centre.

Just again my 2 pennies worth. (I can see a lot of members in this forum are right and far right so my views just get laughed at, well I have been laughing at all the right and far right people for a very long time) :)
