Classic/Vintage Fruit Machines

Not much now really the South Shields arcade was my local haunt but that's now gone, talking to someone into his fruits a few weeks back and he sad it's worth popping to skirlington market, which is a 10 minute drive south of Bridlington, if yer ever near there, A mint arcade aperently with quite a few jpms and other classics, a few in the campsites near by also.

Also have a 10p 6 quid road hog in gillys middlesbrough, and a pretty random 10 pound 20p play Andy Capp 10 minutes away in billingham gillys plays nicely.

Seaton Carew still has about 20 plus bar x big 7 types mostly on 20p 6/8 quid tokens if yer like that type of thing, but yeh the classics are now and have been for a while very thin on the ground.

Scarborough Gilly's has a couple of newer oldies upstairs but not worth taking a trip for unless you going anyway.
Havent been to Seaton for at least 10 years and not a Bar X lover anyway unless its the top box variety.
Used to go to Hartlepool often as daughter was born there. Do they still hang monkeys
Sunderland used to have a nice arcade just a couple minutes walk from bus station but closed years ago.

I go to Brid quite often still but havent stayed over lately, so wouldnt have time to trip off somewhere else as I dont drive and I have to take a visit to Flamborough, but will keep that in mind about Skirlington next time I do stay over.
Cheers

Yeh theres new videos getting added most weeks, some very good write ups, and go through the machines in fine detail, quite interesting watching them, all them tricks i never got to try :what::what: can we go back dr who style, (good machine that) back in the tardis 20 year for a few weeks at least:thumbsup:

lol ^^ No complaints about the amount of emptiers or manipulators I was privy to over the years but most times always seem to drop on them as they were in their final 6 months so to speak.

Barcrest's Thunderbird's been the "King Gutter" - one of the simplest to easily trigger JP after JP until empty, hit about 5-6 machines and they disappeared literally overnight

I also think from time to time about the Project Coin "forced hold" would work on 777 heaven and Jackpot's 7's but not Hit the Six, Double Up or 7's and Melon's. Remember the one day there was a whole line of us in the arcade "bashing" the Project's all at the same time. Comical as the young, inexperienced manageress at the time could think of nothing more to do than shout "Will everyone stop pressing f%&^ing 'collect' "

Played the £6 token Andy Capp in Bradford yesterday.
Proper enjoyed it and it was in a good mood.
Infact I had a nice session all round yesterday.
Double 25 quid top on Partytime, 30 quid top on a sit down Partytime, 35 quid roll in on Double Decker, £68 top on Super Reels.
Divas Reels took 30 quid for a fiver top though.
Enjoyed it miles better than online lately

Popped in to a local Quicksilver yesterday.
3 quid in a Partytime for 51 quid out.

Won a Grand National raffle and noticed on the card they gave me that it said Admiral.

I didnt have a clue that Novomatic were buying/bought these out.
Spent 20 minutes quizzing the cashier.

Should have cottoned on really when those massive sit down Novo's started appearing.

I'm a little young lol, well 31, that project trick where you could force a hold by collecting the credit back out worked on a 3 player call Egyptian Gold.

They had some in Mecca bingo, but was quite rare. Once you had ripped say 30/40 sets of wins then just play normally as it always winked for the top and streaked for 60-70. You could make around £100 an hour. It never got fixed this, they just removed the machines, I remember going in with pockets full of 10p's. It was a £35 Jackpot.

To ensure not killing the golden goose, the sensible ones would refloat them with a tenner using a refill key.....

Yes mate they brought them out about 12 months back now. Happened to mention it to one of the staff I've known nearly 30 years when it first happened and she nearly torn me a new one. Guess it was an end to her little fiddles and self sourced "brown envelopes" eh

Made a small fortune across all the 'skins' from this trick back in the day, had about £1,000 in 20p tokens built up at one point too

Yup, that was us, soon as the cash low warning came on certain machines we'd refloat with a key to ensure future "bashes" - worked pretty well too. We also came across loads of "wannabes" on our routes who once in a while would part with stupid amounts of cash for one of our keys, deliberately carried spares just in case lol.

Enjoy man absolute classic heaven, and im sure Dave will put on some mint bondy food, hot dogs jacket potatoe, mmm he needs to get out barcrest rocket money, very seasonal and super machine, enjoy.

How did I completely miss this thread?

I really want to get down to Mr P's one day, it's a bit of a journey from the Isle of Man though, I've got a notion we can maybe make a family trip out of it, albeit one where I disappear off to the arcade for a couple of days :D

I see it has been mentioned earlier in this thread but the emulator MFME (Multiple Fruit Machine Emulator) evolved into its final form of V20.1* which is incredibly accomplished and emulates damn near everything from the entire history of fruit machines. Everything you need to get up and running is available for free from

I also have a channel dedicated to fruit machines, fruit machine emulation, and online slots, which is here:

* I say final form because Chris Wren, the author of the emulator, very sadly passed away last year, V20.1 was the last version of the emulator he released.

Going to really show my age now, talking late 1960,s pre decimal,1 old penny stake , or 3d or 6d if you were flush, cash jackpot 1 shilling
token jackpot 5 shillings which would get you 20 fags if you wanted to swap it,dunno what has changed but 5 bobs worth of pennies
could last an afternoon, no such thing as sharking as everything was random but it was amusement in the proper meaning of the term.
Lots of weirdos around arcades those days, probably still are, one bloke smacked me hard in the face then realized i wasnt who he thought i was, another massive bloke walked up to the side of me and casually put his hand .. no not what you might be thinking
into the paytray and grabbed a load of coins and walked off ,I was too weedy to much about it.Spent more time in arcades than school
at one time which did not end well to put it mildy.

Bit of a step away from online slots with this post, but I am just in the process of converting half my garage into a games room (games table, dartboard, fridge, TV and games console, etc) and will be getting a fruit machine out there. Biggest dilemma was which one and at what jackpot level. Since my kids may use it, I have opted for a low £5 jackpot payout and whilst looking at fruit machines, stumbled across a vintage amusement arcade just up the road to me which has the old style (1980's era) machines.

I have been chatting to the owner who is selling a modern style old machine (out of place in his arcade) and during our chat and from looking at his website, it has dawned on me how vastly different the industry has become in the last couple of decades. As Dave (arcade chap) has pointed out, in the 80's they were 'amusement arcades' - arcades there for amusement and enjoyment. You could go there with a fiver and spend ages playing on the fruit machines as generally they had high RTP and regular payouts at lower amounts, meaning many hours of 'amusement'. Nowadays with the £100 jackpot fruities, a £20 stake will be gone by the time you finish your first pint and not exactly there for 'amusement' as my boy (10 years old) quite rightly said - the machine looks too complicated with all the buttons and lights'.

This fact was strengthened from a recent family outing to a local caravan park with amusements. Loads of arcades and 100's of fruit machines, but my boy only wanted to play Eachway Nudger (1980's machine) which we found tucked away. Nice and simple and where the 'bonus round' was simply selecting nudges up or down on the reels! He loved it and won the jackpot a few times, walking away with a few quid profit.

So now my thought pattern has changed and will probably source an old machine for amusement out in the games room and am quite looking forward to it. I am sure it will bring back fond memories of my childhood in the amusements whilst on holiday. However, the chances of finding a Silver Ghost, Bar X or 20p Stepper machine seem quite bleak, but would be nice to find one with simple functions like 'Hold' and 'Nudge' instead of 200 bulbs flashing, LCD displays, deal or no deal buttons, etc!

So, what's your favourite old machine? This question is probably only applicable for people in their 40's! (ooops, just remembered another I used to love with black cherries or red cherries on the gamble .... damn, forgotten its name!)
Check steves fruities on youtube he's got loads of old slots, but the each way nudger etc, look no further than chris217 on youtube, what a collection he has🤤

Back from my long weekend at Mr P's
Knackered but well worth it, was fruit machine heaven.
Only downside is that they had just got Diva's Reels in the AGC part and I spunked £80 through it for a top board which gave me a fiver, and 40 quid lost in a Party Time in a nearby arcade.
All in all spent around £150 the whole weekend including food and drinks so cant moan about that considering £120 lost on Astra machines

You do all know there is emulators for old school slots?

Just wanted to say in case some people did not know about them :)

Not quite the same as playing IRL
A bit like playing at an online casino in demo mode.

But i used to play emulators myself, not played them for years as I had loads on my laptop and then my laptop died and not bothered since

As far as I know, Maidstone will be reopening.
I was getting onto Dave the owner to open a nothern Mr P's up but he just kept saying if he could get someone to run it.
As for sharks, never saw a problem as the arcade seemed to more have families in than adults playing in the over 18's.
There were locals in and they seemed fine

I 'lived' in the arcades in the 90's. Me and my best mate used to make a living (ok well beer and fag money) from using our knowledge, patience, great relationship with the owners and nativity of customers.

Some of my all time faves included..

Cash Force (BFM £4.80JP)
Sunset Boulevard (Barcrest £4.80JP)
Blue Moon (Barcrest £4.80JP)
Hi Point (BFM - the £2.40 repeater could go on forever lol!)
Screen Play (Maygay, could get the £3 repeater ever time from Find the Knight or Duck Shoot)
Viva Las Vegas / Road Hog (Barcrest £6 JP)
Big Banker / Big Bucks (JPM)
Reno Reels / Monte Carlo or Bust (BWB - £6 JP)

I could go on forever but my all time low tech classics had to be the Project Coin series, Double UP, Hit the Six, Sevens and Melons and the two beauties below in picture.

View attachment 71219

I had a phase in my youger years on having full size fruities in my mom n dads garage at home. Originally had a £100 JP Club machine and Hit the Top (Barcrest £4 JP) - Later changed these to Silver Shadow (Barcrest £4 JP) and a slightly more modern club machine.

Since getting own family/house I've occasionally had the urge to get another one and always keep an eye open but not really pushed it or done much about it.

Would love a Barcrest 'Up n Over' or 'Lotto Luck' travelled the country emptying these beauties early 2000's and made a small fortune, all of which obviously got pissed up the wall and smoked away lol.
The 5p jackpot 7s n 7 heavens were decent had arcades full of em round here allways pausing too, and the 2.40 10p trick😉😂, £150 a day in summer playing propper, or £100ish not being on top 😂 gr8 days, and the odd wire here n there👀👀😂

I am 3 miles from the one in Maidstone. Been in there a few times, great place to be and thoroughly enjoyable. Just wish I had more time to go in there! Proper blast from the past playing some of those machines - memories of my nan and me in the arcades in Clacton when I was around 10 years old, through to when I was pubbing at the age of 18 (give or take a couple of years!! wink wink).

Would love to get a few classic machines in my garage. One day .......

PS, I am now 46 years old.
