Classic/Vintage Fruit Machines

The 2 in the mid of top pic.
These were the best.

Early on the Barcrest machines had a jackpot which actualy paid a token that could be exchanged for ciggies.
At 8 years old i not only got addicted to fruity's but also to packets of Number 6 Plain..Cough cough.

At first we dicovered that you could flick 1p into the 5p slot and get a credit. A 2p would do the same in the 10p slot. eventualy the machine would start paying out in 2p's as the tube emptied of silver.

Then someone discovered that you prise open the slot for change with a pen knife. It would give 50p in 10ps.
A piece of fishing line or wire with a hook shape on the end inserted and pulled back would give 50p in 10ps until...The machine was empty.

The ones in our seaside arcades originaly had perspex fronts. You could place your knee into the perspex and stop the nudge reel from counting down. IE unlimited nudges. Once you nudged in the jackpot we would do the same for the 3 reels and , Well it was unlimited jackpots till the machine was empty.

I am not proud of myself, for sure, But as a child the temptation of easy money and ciggies was just too much. What a rascal eh.

I should'nt do so but i'm gonna,, I blame Billy Butlin ;)

Anyone remeber slots that paid out in "Green Shield" stamps ? Oh the good ole days.

:)

Bloody hell... How old are you ?! ;)

The same chap I've been chatting to now has The Big Breakfast for sale, eBay item 172356451246.

How could I forget about some of these machines? Great fun and entertaining. I seriously need to get a classic machine in my man cave now.

Quality game that 1. Could payout very well. Shame it was mostly tokens for jackpot though, Still nice to get 5 repeats on though. i still have a few 80's tokens somewhere lol.

I remember the very first "Digital" slots.

They were 1 arm bandits , They had 3 seperate windows to show the reels but they wernt reels as such. All you could see in each window was a digitised number. 1p play. Pull handle and like the first digi watches the numbers would appear.. Totaly shite games but obvioulsy popular enough to get us where we are today.

;)

Spooky, I mentioned these machines to someone on Youtube a couple of days ago.

I remember them from Great Yarmouth when I used to go for 2 weeks every year, 1p play.
Later they were changed to Woolworths stamps.

Trancemonkey - thought so. We've actually met each other about 18 or so years ago in a witherspoons pub I think it was through a mutual friend, I wonder if you can remember haha

Blimey - that's a long time ago! I did try and PM you but your message box is full ;)

Did we go on a route around Erdington and empty some machines (or try to?)... my memory isn't that good, so if it isn't that, then i'm struggling! You have a good memory for names!! :)

I sort of feel like the golden age of slots has come and gone. It was probably better before the internet even happened, not that I was doing it then really. Mobile phones and internet helped kill a lot of things very quickly. Sometimes I think the most profitable ones were manipulators or just strategies like number JPMs because they didn't get fixed as quickly and hence lasted way longer.

Was googling stuff and saw this thread.
Been nice to look through it again.

For anyone up the North East area...
There is a cafe/arcade in Eston near Middlesbrough which has got and is getting more old stuff in.
Just on 5 or 6 quid jackpots

Do you remember hot rod?

That game road hog used to drive me mental... oil slicks... the sound of the spanner spluttering...used to be two versions of it? One that you held keys and one the tyres?

Remember used to be buzzing cos came home 30 quid up!

Summers holidays were the best-we’d get more people playing coming up from Belfast and watch them...’sniping’ was the term ;)

The amount of times I caught the "run" / "streak" on Road Hog was unreal, had my fair share of luck on Viva Las Vegas too which I much preferred. We used to call it "sharking" even the staff would hum the Jaws theme tune quietly when certain individuals came into our local arcade :p

My all time faves were Barcrest's "Up 'N' Over" which I simply cannot find anywhere (nothing to do with the emptier I discovered, surely) and their Lotta Luck. Also BFM's High Point, that £2.40 win (3 x silver bells) could repeat on and on.

Best ever result was a trip to town with about 0.70p and came home with almost £300 (back when the £6 token JP's had just started to appear) I'll also admit way back in the day, I blew the odd Giro or 3 :o

I preferred the token days as well, could end up with a right stash of them in your pocket.
Our local arcade had loads of Projects in, and Blue Moon etc.
Just used to go round them all streaking them.

Had a spare ten minutes in town yesterday so popped in an arcade.
Got offerd a 3 quid cash match, plumped for one of those £5 Bar X copies by Fair Games what plays the loony tunes theme when you get Jackpot.
It went crackers, won £34 out of it and I messed a fiver up as well, unlimited nudges showed on the display but my hand was already in motion to nudge a quid in haha

Yes that Eston arcade is pretty good, its only half anour drive away from me, the road hog and andy capp are both on 20p play 6 pound all cash and play very nice, just nice to have a few classics near by still to play, especially has the south shields arcade has now been sold, and all classics have gone, the guy who owns Eston did by 40 plus machines from there though, sold most the jpms on, but kept monoply 60 has you can see in the video, and quite a few mpu 4s and 5s worth a visit for sure for the friedbrekky alone.

You can play these old fruities using an emulator. I'm not sure the unchipped versions of the games are available though which is a shame.

How good were you at your skills on the fruits? Arcadia for example was too tricky for me but something like stop n step I could hit maybe 50% of the time. Not great but still ok.

yeh ive had the emulator running for over 10 year must be over 100 games plus on memory stick, there is defintely unchipped roms available, has quite a few emptiers have been demonstrated on you tube recently, maygay cluedo for example and even has recent has deal or no deal bankers bonus, certanly interesting to see how they worked just would of been nice to know one at the time, some are just crazy like barcrest supercharged, just a few simple buttons pressed and hey presto top feature, then repeat, obvisouly a lot were purposely put in the code, then it was down to who was in the know.

Most of the emptiers wer accidental... we had some on the Games I did when I was at Impulse. I remember one on a game I did called Spin N Tonic (it didn’t sell too well) where the Reel Roulette code I wrote had a bug which meant it would roll off any symbol it couldn’t allow EXCEPT the Jackpot symbol. That’s what happens when you OR a mask incorrectly (coders will know).

We didn’t find it in test but some player found it in the first week of test in an arcade in Walsall!

Emptied it. Multiple times. So we quickly found out.

If you were clever you never emptied a machine with a cheat/emptier. That would alert us (the manufacturers). If you were clever you’d just take out 50 quid or so from multiple machines.

He got rid of Old JPM's :eek2:
Would have been better keeping some of them and not having as many Electrocoins.
Used to love Indy, Big Bucks, Rollercoaster, Big Banker ETC.

I still have fond memories of my first emptier on Super Line up back in 83 haha

MMM certanly interesting trance monkey, surely some must of been coded in, seemed to be heck of a lot back in the day and most just very simple, like the power 5 for example, just press deal or no deal every time you got a question mark, hey presto feature, some strange goings on for sure obvisouly not so much for the player.

Yeh JD a few month ago he had roller coaster, indiana jones, 2 monopoly 60s all sat in the corridor, think he regrets selling them now, seeing how popular the other oldies are now beeing, has a very nice mark 2 lite a nudge that was suposed to be sold, but he switched that on for us few weeks back to have a go, each way nudger mark 2 was also there that i used to play a lot at south shields, but thats gone, sonic the hedgehog, hot rod and quite a few others, but looks like he will be a few more oldies in.

I dont suppose you know anywhere else what has a few classics in around Yorkshire, Lancashire, ooop North do you?

Its all bloody Cashino's, Storeys, Quicksilvers and Royals round here.

They have a £6 token Andy Capp in Bradford, thats it lol.

There is a couple of arcades with a few older machines in Morecambe

Not much now really the South Shields arcade was my local haunt but that's now gone, talking to someone into his fruits a few weeks back and he sad it's worth popping to skirlington market, which is a 10 minute drive south of Bridlington, if yer ever near there, A mint arcade aperently with quite a few jpms and other classics, a few in the campsites near by also.

Also have a 10p 6 quid road hog in gillys middlesbrough, and a pretty random 10 pound 20p play Andy Capp 10 minutes away in billingham gillys plays nicely.

Seaton Carew still has about 20 plus bar x big 7 types mostly on 20p 6/8 quid tokens if yer like that type of thing, but yeh the classics are now and have been for a while very thin on the ground.

Scarborough Gilly's has a couple of newer oldies upstairs but not worth taking a trip for unless you going anyway.
Havent been to Seaton for at least 10 years and not a Bar X lover anyway unless its the top box variety.
Used to go to Hartlepool often as daughter was born there. Do they still hang monkeys
Sunderland used to have a nice arcade just a couple minutes walk from bus station but closed years ago.

I go to Brid quite often still but havent stayed over lately, so wouldnt have time to trip off somewhere else as I dont drive and I have to take a visit to Flamborough, but will keep that in mind about Skirlington next time I do stay over.
Cheers

Yeh theres new videos getting added most weeks, some very good write ups, and go through the machines in fine detail, quite interesting watching them, all them tricks i never got to try :what::what: can we go back dr who style, (good machine that) back in the tardis 20 year for a few weeks at least:thumbsup:

lol ^^ No complaints about the amount of emptiers or manipulators I was privy to over the years but most times always seem to drop on them as they were in their final 6 months so to speak.

Barcrest's Thunderbird's been the "King Gutter" - one of the simplest to easily trigger JP after JP until empty, hit about 5-6 machines and they disappeared literally overnight

I also think from time to time about the Project Coin "forced hold" would work on 777 heaven and Jackpot's 7's but not Hit the Six, Double Up or 7's and Melon's. Remember the one day there was a whole line of us in the arcade "bashing" the Project's all at the same time. Comical as the young, inexperienced manageress at the time could think of nothing more to do than shout "Will everyone stop pressing f%&^ing 'collect' "

Played the £6 token Andy Capp in Bradford yesterday.
Proper enjoyed it and it was in a good mood.
Infact I had a nice session all round yesterday.
Double 25 quid top on Partytime, 30 quid top on a sit down Partytime, 35 quid roll in on Double Decker, £68 top on Super Reels.
Divas Reels took 30 quid for a fiver top though.
Enjoyed it miles better than online lately

Popped in to a local Quicksilver yesterday.
3 quid in a Partytime for 51 quid out.

Won a Grand National raffle and noticed on the card they gave me that it said Admiral.

I didnt have a clue that Novomatic were buying/bought these out.
Spent 20 minutes quizzing the cashier.

Should have cottoned on really when those massive sit down Novo's started appearing.

I'm a little young lol, well 31, that project trick where you could force a hold by collecting the credit back out worked on a 3 player call Egyptian Gold.

They had some in Mecca bingo, but was quite rare. Once you had ripped say 30/40 sets of wins then just play normally as it always winked for the top and streaked for 60-70. You could make around £100 an hour. It never got fixed this, they just removed the machines, I remember going in with pockets full of 10p's. It was a £35 Jackpot.

To ensure not killing the golden goose, the sensible ones would refloat them with a tenner using a refill key.....

Yes mate they brought them out about 12 months back now. Happened to mention it to one of the staff I've known nearly 30 years when it first happened and she nearly torn me a new one. Guess it was an end to her little fiddles and self sourced "brown envelopes" eh

Made a small fortune across all the 'skins' from this trick back in the day, had about £1,000 in 20p tokens built up at one point too

Yup, that was us, soon as the cash low warning came on certain machines we'd refloat with a key to ensure future "bashes" - worked pretty well too. We also came across loads of "wannabes" on our routes who once in a while would part with stupid amounts of cash for one of our keys, deliberately carried spares just in case lol.

Enjoy man absolute classic heaven, and im sure Dave will put on some mint bondy food, hot dogs jacket potatoe, mmm he needs to get out barcrest rocket money, very seasonal and super machine, enjoy.

How did I completely miss this thread?

I really want to get down to Mr P's one day, it's a bit of a journey from the Isle of Man though, I've got a notion we can maybe make a family trip out of it, albeit one where I disappear off to the arcade for a couple of days :D

I see it has been mentioned earlier in this thread but the emulator MFME (Multiple Fruit Machine Emulator) evolved into its final form of V20.1* which is incredibly accomplished and emulates damn near everything from the entire history of fruit machines. Everything you need to get up and running is available for free from

I also have a channel dedicated to fruit machines, fruit machine emulation, and online slots, which is here:

* I say final form because Chris Wren, the author of the emulator, very sadly passed away last year, V20.1 was the last version of the emulator he released.

Going to really show my age now, talking late 1960,s pre decimal,1 old penny stake , or 3d or 6d if you were flush, cash jackpot 1 shilling
token jackpot 5 shillings which would get you 20 fags if you wanted to swap it,dunno what has changed but 5 bobs worth of pennies
could last an afternoon, no such thing as sharking as everything was random but it was amusement in the proper meaning of the term.
Lots of weirdos around arcades those days, probably still are, one bloke smacked me hard in the face then realized i wasnt who he thought i was, another massive bloke walked up to the side of me and casually put his hand .. no not what you might be thinking
into the paytray and grabbed a load of coins and walked off ,I was too weedy to much about it.Spent more time in arcades than school
at one time which did not end well to put it mildy.

Bit of a step away from online slots with this post, but I am just in the process of converting half my garage into a games room (games table, dartboard, fridge, TV and games console, etc) and will be getting a fruit machine out there. Biggest dilemma was which one and at what jackpot level. Since my kids may use it, I have opted for a low £5 jackpot payout and whilst looking at fruit machines, stumbled across a vintage amusement arcade just up the road to me which has the old style (1980's era) machines.

I have been chatting to the owner who is selling a modern style old machine (out of place in his arcade) and during our chat and from looking at his website, it has dawned on me how vastly different the industry has become in the last couple of decades. As Dave (arcade chap) has pointed out, in the 80's they were 'amusement arcades' - arcades there for amusement and enjoyment. You could go there with a fiver and spend ages playing on the fruit machines as generally they had high RTP and regular payouts at lower amounts, meaning many hours of 'amusement'. Nowadays with the £100 jackpot fruities, a £20 stake will be gone by the time you finish your first pint and not exactly there for 'amusement' as my boy (10 years old) quite rightly said - the machine looks too complicated with all the buttons and lights'.

This fact was strengthened from a recent family outing to a local caravan park with amusements. Loads of arcades and 100's of fruit machines, but my boy only wanted to play Eachway Nudger (1980's machine) which we found tucked away. Nice and simple and where the 'bonus round' was simply selecting nudges up or down on the reels! He loved it and won the jackpot a few times, walking away with a few quid profit.

So now my thought pattern has changed and will probably source an old machine for amusement out in the games room and am quite looking forward to it. I am sure it will bring back fond memories of my childhood in the amusements whilst on holiday. However, the chances of finding a Silver Ghost, Bar X or 20p Stepper machine seem quite bleak, but would be nice to find one with simple functions like 'Hold' and 'Nudge' instead of 200 bulbs flashing, LCD displays, deal or no deal buttons, etc!

So, what's your favourite old machine? This question is probably only applicable for people in their 40's! (ooops, just remembered another I used to love with black cherries or red cherries on the gamble .... damn, forgotten its name!)
Check steves fruities on youtube he's got loads of old slots, but the each way nudger etc, look no further than chris217 on youtube, what a collection he has?

Back from my long weekend at Mr P's
Knackered but well worth it, was fruit machine heaven.
Only downside is that they had just got Diva's Reels in the AGC part and I spunked £80 through it for a top board which gave me a fiver, and 40 quid lost in a Party Time in a nearby arcade.
All in all spent around £150 the whole weekend including food and drinks so cant moan about that considering £120 lost on Astra machines

You do all know there is emulators for old school slots?

Just wanted to say in case some people did not know about them :)

Not quite the same as playing IRL
A bit like playing at an online casino in demo mode.

But i used to play emulators myself, not played them for years as I had loads on my laptop and then my laptop died and not bothered since

As far as I know, Maidstone will be reopening.
I was getting onto Dave the owner to open a nothern Mr P's up but he just kept saying if he could get someone to run it.
As for sharks, never saw a problem as the arcade seemed to more have families in than adults playing in the over 18's.
There were locals in and they seemed fine

I 'lived' in the arcades in the 90's. Me and my best mate used to make a living (ok well beer and fag money) from using our knowledge, patience, great relationship with the owners and nativity of customers.

Some of my all time faves included..

Cash Force (BFM £4.80JP)
Sunset Boulevard (Barcrest £4.80JP)
Blue Moon (Barcrest £4.80JP)
Hi Point (BFM - the £2.40 repeater could go on forever lol!)
Screen Play (Maygay, could get the £3 repeater ever time from Find the Knight or Duck Shoot)
Viva Las Vegas / Road Hog (Barcrest £6 JP)
Big Banker / Big Bucks (JPM)
Reno Reels / Monte Carlo or Bust (BWB - £6 JP)

I could go on forever but my all time low tech classics had to be the Project Coin series, Double UP, Hit the Six, Sevens and Melons and the two beauties below in picture.

View attachment 71219

I had a phase in my youger years on having full size fruities in my mom n dads garage at home. Originally had a £100 JP Club machine and Hit the Top (Barcrest £4 JP) - Later changed these to Silver Shadow (Barcrest £4 JP) and a slightly more modern club machine.

Since getting own family/house I've occasionally had the urge to get another one and always keep an eye open but not really pushed it or done much about it.

Would love a Barcrest 'Up n Over' or 'Lotto Luck' travelled the country emptying these beauties early 2000's and made a small fortune, all of which obviously got pissed up the wall and smoked away lol.
The 5p jackpot 7s n 7 heavens were decent had arcades full of em round here allways pausing too, and the 2.40 10p trick??, £150 a day in summer playing propper, or £100ish not being on top ? gr8 days, and the odd wire here n there???

I am 3 miles from the one in Maidstone. Been in there a few times, great place to be and thoroughly enjoyable. Just wish I had more time to go in there! Proper blast from the past playing some of those machines - memories of my nan and me in the arcades in Clacton when I was around 10 years old, through to when I was pubbing at the age of 18 (give or take a couple of years!! wink wink).

Would love to get a few classic machines in my garage. One day .......

PS, I am now 46 years old.
