Rocky-
I had the same thing happen to me and was notified this morning from my card issuer. A few years ago, when my Discover card was stolen(-not really stolen,an employee at Discover was manually entering his transactions on a card that we had not received yet or activated) we put a transaction limit of 500 USD. Any transaction over that we have to call to approve, let the cc company know where the transaction is going to take place, when and the exact amount. It was a total pain the butt to get this in place but worth it.
Mine was for 1700 and some change, at a Walmart.com, when I said no we didnt make the purchase, the bank cancelled that card and is sending me a new card. Not really a big deal, but I still would like to know how they got the number because we only use that card for gas. My husband and I usually get gas at our BJs club, and the last 11 transactions were all at BJs. I called BJs and spoke to the manager about it, and he was interested in this because 2 other members of the club called earlier in the month with a similar experience. He was going to see what he needed to do to get the gas pumps inspected for those devices that steal cc numbers. I also called the other 2 gas stations that each had 1 transaction to let them know. They are the only places in the past 5 months we purchased gas with that card.
These freakin' criminals are getting more sophisticated, and to be quite frank, it is really starting to get on my last nerve! I am seriously thinking of getting rid of all our cc's because it is becoming more of a PIA then they are worth. With this crap, the breach with Target, and TJMax before that, it is such a hassel to keep checking and if something fruadulant is on there, cancel the card, wait the 5-10 days for the new one etc.etc. Not sure it is worth it.
