One normally has to go to the states to see that kind of weather, so for England it is pretty scary, even though the worst damage was broken windows and dented cars.

There were also a couple of tornadoes reported, but nothing like you see in the US.

The cause was 3 supercell storms, which are a mere 1% of all storms seen in the UK, caused when conditions were "just right", and not too dissimilar to what happens in the US when cool air moves East into the hot and humid air coming from the Mexican Gulf.

There was also a supercell in Belgium on the same day.

Nothing down south though, just a very warm and sunny day. It didn't get interesting till as far north as Birmingham.

That's really interesting.. Not only the States but in Aust we have as big if not bigger hail stones at times.
Our most treacherous cold disater was an avalanche at Thredbo NSW back in July 97 where a survivor was found lying trapped under the avalanched after 4 days next to his new dead wife. That was so tragic here especially because of it's rarity and the marital status..

I had 3 months in Edinburgh some years ago over winter and that was scary coming from the "land down under" where not much happens geographicaly that is..just mostly sunshine and bad bushfires..and some bad hail storms..and very recently where i live a couple of 5.3 earth tremmors..but we have it easy compared to some other places with natural disasters..Working and living in snow was an awesome experience..

Snow we have here, but it costs an arm and a leg to go..and it's only a feature here. not too deadly ( other than the above one case of course..

And speaking of the cells and atmosphere I look at a rainbow differently yesterday after this..

I recently saw a video of a whale spurting from it's blowhole and that created a rainbow . It was sensational.. I know a little more about cells and what can happen now....yes interesting ...
Hope you escaped any ill effects..

Unfortunately yes, the nearest storm was 100 miles to the north.

I did consider going on a "chase", not the usual kind one expects from a gambler either;)

The US chasers have all that kit, but when I tried it some years back, all I had was the morning TV forecast and looking at the sky.

I have gone on a few "snow hunts" in the past, but for the last three winters the snow has come to me.

Even UK weather can be quite risky, although most of the risk is down to getting caught up in a traffic incident during bad weather.

It should be easier now in the UK, as mobile broadband allows similar types of kit to be taken out as in the states, but decent opportunities would be rare, and could be at any time of year. The states has a chasing season between April and the end of June, where you can be sure to see numerous big storms, even if no tornadoes.

I have often wondered where the best place is to buy a house to get the best the weather can offer come to me. As a child I lived right on the south coast, and was constantly frustrated to see big storms constantly pass to the north, east, south, and west, yet never seem to come right over. The only real excitement was the regular French imports at the end of a hot day, something we don't seem to be getting as often now.
