this one can be tough as nails. it's high variance as is,
and then you can ramp it up - if you dare - and make your
wilds pay double or 5x. You have to also double your stake or
5x it.
That I don't quite get, because why would I not rather just up
my regular bet and also get 5x on wins not including a wild?
Anybody know?

I like it, I think this one can be a legit DOA competitor.

I assume the payouts (rtp) will be roughly the same if you choose the 5x wild option or just 5x your normal bet so they must give more wild wins to make up for it . I believe the purpose of these bigger bet options is to make you bet a higher stake than normal whilst lowering variance . Big bets and low variance is the casino's ideal

That might be the case. Strange though that the rules don't mention something like "more wilds on reels".
