Been having one or two conversations with people about the pros and cons of Facebook - still can't make up my mind whether I like it LOL. It's very good for sending messages and looking at photos, but it beats me why so many people use a lot of the junk applications on there.

I don't remember it in it's previous incarnation myself, but people tell me it's got worse. Guess this is through sheer volume of stuff. What does everyone else think? Is there room in the market for a better SN app to take it's place?

Might just have to write one! I can feel a project coming on LOL

I wouldn't have joined but the young girls at work got us all to signup.

It is good to keep in touch with family & friends that don't live close by. It's also good for networking as I've gotten laid off and I keep in touch with old managers & coworkers in the car business.

It's also good because you have to agree to a "friendship" with someone before they can see your posts & pictures.

What I don't like is that anyone who is your "friend" can see what you or anyone your friends with has posted. You have to remember to watch what your saying.

I also have heard the pros and cons of facebook and all the others like myspace and such, i'll just stick with good ole casinomeister, hell its all here anyways, gambling, chatting, social clubs, great threads, good online friends.

A lot of folks like it and it seems geared toward all ages, its just not for me...............laurie:)

I think it's a classier place than Myspace.
I don't care for any of them like I use to.
You still have kids joining both each day.But facebook to me is better.
A group of us at times keep an eye out in Myspace for the safety of the kids from the pervs of the World and report.
You can keep them both. It's not my bag to chat with people like that.
If I want to chat i'll go to aol chat  Now that is trash.

The only one at times I go to now is Second Life and this is only talking to people we really know on the outside of online chatting.

Either myspace or facebook is a fad. I closed my myspace but only can disable my facebook (there is no real cancellation. SUCKs!). I don't trust facebbook at all.

Not my cup of tea..don't belong to either...bunch of garbage on both IMO...and TMI (too much information)given out by so many without concern, does not have any real value...all just my thoughts...no offense to any that belong to these places...heck, even the president of the USA belongs to one of them I think..so have at it  Me, I like to keep personal and private things to myself and family...not let the whole world know when my last potty break was..(Yes, my son showed me this on one of those) geez...

facebook

I was one of the people that got on fb and got addicted for 3 weeks. Got in touch of old friends and family - put pics up yad yad yad -- week four closed my account forever - realized why I stopped talking to those old friends.

The final straw was a message from a friend from school trying to get me into a cool biz plan.

Wow, I could write a book about this question :D

Actually I did :p It was the subject of my dissertation not so long ago.

The major concern I had, and still have, is how Facebook and other social networking sites basically remove any remaining threads of privacy that we have left today. I considered this to be 100% the fault of the person who created it.

We have an interesting situation here in the UK. I think there may have been some similar cases in the USA and others, but I didn't really consider these as they weren't appropriate for my argument. Once upon a time, if you applied for a job, you were invited to an interview, possibly involving a recruitment event where a number of potential employees were 'put against' each other while members of that particular company observed. A decision was based on whether they liked what they saw.

Nowadays, before you are even considered for an interview, someone will Google you. If they find a profile of you, it is read with great interest. And it only takes a single 'bad' photo, or comment, even perhaps something listed in the 'about you' section, for the employer to discard your application. Facebook even had an 'agreement' shall we say with certain companies, so that they were able to view profiles of anyone. It went against their privacy policy for a start. And oh boy, the response I got when I challenged their Press Office about this was utterly priceless :D I really do think if they were able to trace me they would have sent someone around straight away (the Mafia possibly ;) ) It was something hardly anyone knew about. I don't believe they still have this arrangement, but let's face it, many teenagers are naive enough to accept anyone and everyone as their friend, irrespective of whether they know them or not, so gaining access under an alias really isn't all that difficult.

The USA has a kind of privacy law (embedded in the Constitution and the [Fourth?] Amendment). In the UK, we do not. We have privacy policies which the Data Protection Act enforced, but there is no actual privacy law. Many falsely believe we do have one, which was created by the European Convention on Human Rights and became law under section eight of the Human Rights Act. But how wrong they are! Having 'respect for one's private life' holds absolutely no weight at all.

We have likewise had a number of situations where people have been sacked from work because of something they posted on their profile. Fair enough, some have been comments defaming the company they work for: others have simply said 'I hate my job.' Personally, I don't know what's more frightening. The fact that this new form of communication has revolutionised how we go about our daily lives - and not necessarily in a positive way - or that there are people out there observing everything we are doing.

I'm not suggesting we are living in a Big Brother society, as Orwell predicted. But over 200 years ago, Bentham devised the Panopticon. Expanded by Foucault, the theory is that we only need to believe we are being watched for the same effects to materialise. Back then, it was used to devise a more suitable prison service. Therefore, perhaps we are now prisoners of our own society.

And that is my very long and somewhat complicated reasoning for why I will never have a Facebook account :D

I think Facebook, MySpace, etc., are just more ways for society to isolate and insulate itself from "the real world". People that do not interact in "real time" seem to become colder, less sympathetic, less able to "connect" to others around them. They become lazy, are not willing to go out and network face to face. I see it as another reason our world is eventually going to go the way of other societies in the history of this planet.

But hey, that's just me. :p

I LOVE facebook, I met up with so many friends I haven't seen in years and for the last few months we've all been getting together for drinks and dinner..
All of my neighbors are on it (husbands and wives) and we do nothing but laugh..I think it is so much better than myspace..
The guy who started facebook was on a talk show yesterday, he's only 24 years old and is now worth 100 million dollars just by starting facebook..
I haven't has any bad experiences as of yet but if somebody does get to me, at least we have the choice to befriend them..
I'm really happy with it...:)

facebook is good for checking up on friends and thats about it, I don't wanna know if u'v just had a foot long S*1T, or if your stopking smoking, people must learn to keep this B*ll*x information to themselves.

myface, spacebook it's all nonsense

Tempting as it may seem - facebook can eat up a lot of time - really unsure if I want to go there. Yeah sure, it might put me in touch with old acquaintances - that's the tempting part. But I really don't have the time to spare to monitor such a thing.

Meisterland is my Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.

FWIW, I never really wanted to join Facebook - couldn't see the point of it. Very few people I know invited me to join Facebook, other than industry people who I have plenty of other means to communicate with.

So, I never joined Facebook.

Then, I discover that my daughter had - with her real name. I wrote to complain to Facebook requesting a nickname change - no response. Needless to say I wasn't too impressed.

And recently, Facebook tried to claim rights to all the content that its members had created or posted, before being forced to back down.

Needless to say I'm even more convinced I made the right decision long ago not to join.

The whole point of facebook is that you use your real name so that your friends can find you.

Obviously I'm a bit biased since we're developing a social network aimed at the gambling & poker market.

That being said, I can agree with many that it was amazing at first on Facebook when I started connecting so quickly and easily with long-lost friends from so many years ago.

But after that, the novelty for me wore off. I really could care less about being part of your pirate ship crew, having a snowball fight with you, etc. I can't stand the applications and block them everytime someone tries to bother me with these time wasters.

My feeling on the social networking front is that the future of the industry will be mini-networks centered around specific themes and topics.

When you go to Myspace or Facebook, everyone has a different reason for being there, and varied interests. But if you have a social network aimed at motorcycle enthusiasts, there's a common thread that everyone shares, resulting in more user engagement and interaction.

I feel that Facebook is a bit too bland and messy when it comes to keeping up with status updates and all that. And Myspace has a lot of problems with users customizing the crap out of their profiles, to the point you can't find the "add me" or "message me" buttons, you have to hunt through their profile to find the annoying music to shut off, and many overload their page with so many graphics and junk that it takes forever to load or just crashes your browser.

I think aspects of both networks are appealing, but I don't think either of them has gotten "it" right as far as user engagement or design goes.

Yeah I joined up at the beginning of this year and the second day of being signed up I had a total of 15 friends requests from OLD friends and school mates, since then I have visited 3 of them and had some great times drinking and telling stories of old.

I basically keep it simple, I have a few photo's of myslef the misses and little baby ben, just a general brief descritpion of myself so others can locate me, I personally use it once a week for a bout 5 minutes, it's been ok for me so far.
