Earlier this morning I received a phone call from Klub8. I can't remember the ladies name, let's just call her Sarah.

"Hi, this is Sarah from Jackpot umm Klub8 Casino"

She then told me that their merchant had told them my card had been reported as lost or stolen. This is the strange part. First of all, the card is here right in front of me. Second, if I had reported it as lost or stolen shouldn't they only find out when I try to make a deposit? I made a deposit yesterday and it went through fine. Somehow they have decided to update my card status. It seems to me as though they've either tried to make a deposit I didn't authorise or they're doing random/daily status checks on people's cards.

How could they find out the status of my card (and why do they care) when I wasn't trying make a deposit? I was in bed when they called.

Paul, do you remember what the number was or did it show up on your caller ID. I received a strange number calling me this evening as well. I didn't bother to answer it though since I didn't recognize it and they never bothered to leave a message either but the strange part was that it was an international call.

It came up private. They are licensed in The Netherlands Antilles but I have no idea where their support call centre is located. The lady who called me had an accent from somewhere in Asia, possibly The Philippenes

The only thing Casinos share is negative database, that has all blacklisted cards, all ppl who tried to/did chargeback and so on.
Maybe your card was in that database, by checkup they found it and temporarily disabled you from using that card, and the stolen part might be just an excuse.

Hi Paul,

If you ever have any unsolicited telephone calls, make sure you get them to confirm your account number, at the very least. If they are from the casino they purport to be, then they will have this information to hand.
Other information you can get them to confirm is your date of birth the amounts of your last 3 deposits.

You might also want to report the matter to Klub8 so they can launch an internal investigation as this is something that can potentially harm their business.

Finally, remember the casino is not your bank or your mum, if your card is indeed reported lost or stolen then that matter is confidential between you and your bank. I wouldn't expect a phone call from Tescos to tell me what I already know. Casinos are just another merchant.

I thought kind of the same thing. If your card is lost or stolen it is you that would be reporting it. The bank doesn't call you to tell you your card is lost. Unless you deal with the First National Psychic Savings And Loan.

Brinnnnnnnng - Hello. This is your bank calling. We're just calling to tell you that you lost your bank card. Your lucky numbers are 3, 8, 10, 44 and 65.

But seriously. There is no way a business will know your card is lost. And if it was stolen it would be you reporting it to the bank. Not the thief. So the card would either work and the business would have no idea anything is wrong or the card would not work and the business would assume the real owner must know because he would have been the one to disable it. I seriously doubt they would think you would want the last 7000 places you used the card to call you. Unless you were really bored.

I had an experience that is related to this, but had to do with QT.

I had a card that was cancelled (but I didn't know this), and it sat listed in my QT account for months before I tried to use it. Not once did they contact me to tell me it was no good, and they deleted it and sent me an email letting me know that they removed it, only after I tried to use it to deposit.

Moral of the story: Klub8 should have no way of knowing if a card is lost/stolen/etc unless someone tries to use it. IMO, I think your best bet is to find out if there if someone at Klub8 was trying to scam you, or if someone else was indeed trying to use your card. In either case, I'd almost be inclined just to cancel that card and order a new one.

Maybe They process it at a different time

Well I was thinking since you had used it only the day before that maybe , they do not process their charges until a little later, since I know a lot of charges from casinos I use, sometimes show as pending charges on my statement and sometimes do not even show as pending or processed until days later on my statement. Not often.

But to have the casino call you, late at night... what was their reason? Were they asking you to provide a new card right then? Or did they say you owed money for the previous days deposit?

I certainly would look into the matter and complain, because what ever the reason of the call, it should have been done during business hours your time, or email would have been fine. You may wish to email the support or the casino manager, and tell him this call was upsetting.

I agree with previous posts, as a precaution get your card replaced, because you never know. It would be one thing if they said card denied, but stolen..it seems unlikey, if it had been reported stolen a casino would simply get a denial these days.

In brick and mortar businesses, In the old days, if a card was hot or no good, the companies made merchants cut the card in half in view of the customer. They paid employees anywhere from $25 up to a $100 or more for doing this as a reward! Having worked at the airlines, it came up often. Talk about a bad position to be put in... Sometimes it got a bit escalated an police were called. But these days , I think its just a non approval.

I think your instincts were good when you saw this as a red flag. A thief would def use buzzwords like" reported as stolen" , and being the season a lot of shopping is happening, someone might be easily suckered into giving out more info.

This happens because the casino at the point of deposit electronically captures the amount that is in your account then will send the charge to the bank. Because the bank has not yet received these charges it can show up as available funds, however if you were to spend them, the casino would still get paid, but the player would have to pay bank charges if the funds were no longer there.

In the UK this practice of cutting up cards in front of the customer is still common. Many employees are given financial incentives as you point out, as a reward to retain these cards. Although since chip and pin was introduced it has made it more difficult for the criminal. Obviously with CNP fraud it is not possible to do this, which is why they ask for the CVC number.
