Question Video poker - how do you wager?

I'm just curious about the betting styles of others at video poker.

I usually only play Jacks or Better (single, sometimes four-hand), max bet, but vary coin sizes from 50p, £1, £2, and £5 as opposed to playing the same value coin throughout the session.

Now I know the house has the edge at JorB, and each bet regardless of coin size, carries that same edge. But my reasoning is that if you play the same coin size without varying, eventually the house edge will eventually eat up your diminishing bank roll. However, if you jump to higher value coins throughout the session, when you hit the winning hands, they're obviously worth a lot more, giving you the chance of making a decent score before quitting.

Case in point. Sunday I was varying between £1, £2 and £5 coins at Crazy Vegas single line JorB when I was dealt a Royal Flush... with £5 coins! (a 650,000-1 shot apparently).

Three days later, at a sister site (and where I'd had a poor streak), coins initially varied from 50p to £2, before swapping to £1, £2 and £5 when I discarded my first five cards and got dealt a Royal Flush... with £5 coins!

I've hit Royals before (three for 20k) but I know that getting two so close together was lucky, as was upping my bets at the right time. But does anyone else habitually change coin value during sessions, or do you stick to the one value regardless?

I'd welcome others' opinions!

PS Does anyone know of an RTG casino that offers $2 coins at VP? Normally you have to jump from $1 to $5 without the inbetween denomination that most others offer.

VP is my favorite game. I always bet the same though, $1.00 ($5.00 for the hand). It's been a while since I had a Royal, I seem to get dealt 4 of the cards and the 5th card never hits. I've only been dealt a full Royal once and that was at a Riverboat. What a rush! I guess I hate the thought of hitting it on that one time I changed my bet for a lower amount.

I know what you mean about hitting at a lower coin level - happened to me once in Atlantic City when I switched down to 50cent coins and hit the Royal!

Usually I use three denominations in sequence, starting from either the 50p or £1. So for example, three bets at £1, two or three at £2, and one or two (sometimes three!) at £5, and repeat. It's a nice boost to the bank roll when you start hitting the hands at the higher coin levels, and when you hit dry patches not all the hands are being played at the higher values. It's a style that seems to let me combine sensible betting with some higher stakes action mixed in.

I noticed you are from the UK wolfy, love it or hate it MGS has by far the best array of VP`s out there, I play high variance VP like level up, bet size depends entirely on balance, you will experience horrendous dry spells playing these though, but, it`s all about the end result :).

You're not wrong there Seventh777, it is all about the end result. Looking at my records, I lost eight deposits at Aspinalls after reopening my account at the weekend, before hitting the Royal on my ninth deposit to leave me substantially ahead.

Funnily enough, I had taken a bit of a break from online play and only just returned this week. At one stage I hit three or four Royals at Microgaming, but then nothing with them for ages before I "retired" and then two in three days.

As for the range of VPs on offer, it doesn't really bother me since I tend to stick to Jacks or Better. I know the strategy and it's too hassly learning more for other VP variaties. I have dabbled in Aces and Faces in the past, but haven't looked up the correct strategy, using the one for JorB instead (I know that's wrong! Lol).

I wont post my screenie lol, but suffice to say that the end of April this year I hit a Royal Flush on x8 for a £1 bet = £6400 return, my biggest ever win from any game, beating my previous best of just over £4.5k on the old LotR slot for a £15 bet. I`ve had several RF`s now but i`m still awaiting my 1st ever true video slot JP (none UK based x500 bet, had plenty of those).

Cheers.

Roy.

That reminds me, I only play Aces and Faces. Love those 4 Aces!

I also change denomination alot. That way I have a chance of hitting a big royal but also making my money go farther by dropping down coin value as well. I will take a small royal without complaints

Yes that' my reasoning as well. Giving yourself a chance at a big score, while trying to make your bankroll last longer.

I like 3 or 4 hand hand joker poker, deuces wild, and aces and faces at quarter denomination (5 coins of course). Can't stand single hand vp, it's so boring.

Hit a 8k royal years ago while I was at work. Sad thing was I couldn't tell anyone there but I made a few calls to friends.;)

I love video poker as well as the rest of you but i never ever have hit a Royal in the 20 years i been gambling. The closest i have ever been was 1 time i hit a straight flush but other then that for whatever reason it just ain't happening for me. I play 3 versions, either Jacks or better, Aces & Eights or Aces & Faces but always 5 coins. Just for once i wish i could say i hit a Royal Flush, ah well .l

I know how that feels - took me ages (although not 20 years!) to hit a Royal, but got a few now online.

I've also managed to repeat the feat playing JorB in Vegas too - first was at the now defunct Stardust while sitting at the bar for $4k, second in Atlantic City for $2k, and third was in Vegas at the Mirage for $4k. Believe it or not, I've even hit a Royal at Let It Ride in Vegas took at the Frontier, another casino that's shut. Seems whenever I get lucky there, they close 'em down! Lol
