the WTF thread

I don't envisage some apocalyptic worldwide internet cut-off as I'm usually a glass half-full kinda guy.

If anything, there'll be more sophisticated 'skirmishes' and flurries, like we have now really.

And look on the bright side - if the internet goes down, you won't have to worry about warning people about internet outages :p
Anyone confusing Trump, religion and the likes with this threat to try and score points really need to give their heads a wobble. Here is Biden saying the same things

'Cyber attackS'

It could be many small, targeted attacks over many years, much like now.

I don't live life in constant fear of what our politicians and foreign powers may end up doing, that's no way to exist. I tend to deal with things as and when they happen, there's the difference

You asked me a question. I responded with evidence of their concerns

I think Geordie's had quite enough coffee for the day :p

Did anyone see Biden's autocued bumbling in his address today and him taking no questions?Does not seem like he is in charge. What about Macron's insistence of peace in our time? I think that Germanies shutting off of the pipe flow from Russia was a very big move which will cost the EU's people a lot. I think that Putin will be laughing his head off. The banking sanctions are a joke. Why have they not blocked access to silicon chips and other things critical to their abilities? And should the UK and other countries abandon the zero emissions mandates and start relying again on our natural recourses?
We will see the sanctions hit us more than Russia

Amazing how in this age of ranged warfare, drones, hacking, biochemical weaponry and proxy warfare that it all gets rolled back to base actions, with tanks, artillery, helicopters, bombers, fighters and troops invading a weaker country.

And all the while our leaders strut around talking of cutting their pocket money and sanctions, as though Putin hadn't considered that.

Also amazing that when the chips are down it can just take one brazen leader to openly defy everyone and start what looks like a long period of instability in Europe on a whim, never mind the world. Now that China's seen our 'response' to these types of scenarios, what odds a China invasion of Taiwan next?...

I raised the possibility of Russia invading the Ukraine and China invading Taiwan over a year ago because I think that they consider America weak with Biden in charge.
Taiwan have resources that China could do with so I would not rule out an invasion

The cyber attacks they're worried about are not the internet per se but critical infrastructure like the smart grid.
How's the anyone but Trump vote working out?

I gave him a list.

Thinking about that the other day: i thought, bar a few splatters here and there, moved on to more nefarious means (using a country's debt to wiggle your way into their policies - cough - Greece) or multi national corporations using their dolla bills to buy influence and power

But nope - nostalgia dictates there's still room for some Doc Martin boot stomping

Quite Surreal - even moreso the fact the Russians will be round a table with some of their counterparts in the coming periods acting as if nothing happened:

Yeah, we'll sort that climate change out after we quell the nationals of the country we've just invaded, give us a break, ffs

He'll be telling world leaders at their next crisis meeting, in no uncertain terms, that Ukraine not be attacked further, and that Gorbachev's actions are unacceptable

I didn't think vlad would launch wide scale strikes, I thought he was going to do another crimea style takeover of the breakaway regions, then negotiate some sort of treaty. He's going all in here, europe will have to find other sources of gas, won't be easy replacing that amount. At the end of the day it's a stupid policy decision to poke the bear for 8 years and look like you intend to go further, it's Realpolitik.

I suppose putin could be toppled by the generals or other powerful business figures, that's always a possibility if unlikely.

It has been reported that shelling has disturbed very sensitive parts of Chenobyl which will be a disaster as well as hit a nuclear waste facility.
I would guess that they will target all military facilities including those that house anything provided to the Ukraine by the west.
It looks brutal and they are already 130km into Ukraine

"Our" response. At least there is something rather than sitting on "our" arse and doing absolutely nothing.

You're dealing with a lunatic here who can do all sort of harm. A measured response is required rather than lets throw the sink et al at it.

The 'West's' response then. Is that better? Is that more in line with your principles?

For all our takes on the situation, we could all be armchair experts on the matter, so try not to get too riled up about specific wording based on what's been reported eh?

"Our" as in anybody not on the side of Putin. Never said the UK or the west.

That tank had no chance, you can't fight on the ground if you don't control the air, it was a suicide mission to send those men out on. Maximum casualties is apparently the ukraine objective, to inflict on the invaders, but I doubt the politicians will be in harm's way, as per usual, to achieve that.

Not content with shelling Chernobyl, now comes the bombing, with citizens brought into shelters.

Also hitting Turkish, i.e NATO grounded planes, on top of everything else, it's the kind of thing that could easily escalate the conflict and bring other nations into play. Support for Putin is also seemingly not as high as he'd hoped, with signatories of his own military opposing these actions, and now protests in Moscow itself.....

biden is getting more and more incoherent by the day it’s frightening how he clearly has cognitive problems possibly dementia very similar to my grandmothers behaviour she had dementia. it’s not him running the show as we know, and don’t get me started on kamala i made it as VP by being on my knees harris

It looks like he is on his own. It has been said that Putin is sacrificing men and equipment in order to save civilian lives and is allowed those who wish to fleet to do so.

What exactly can the west do to help the Ukraine? NATO can't just intervene by sending troops and if the UN wants to send a "special convoy" Russia as a permanent member of the Security Council will say nyet as they have veto power.

Even I balked at seeing 'pravda' though the analysis doesn't seem so impossible as to be true, one narrative is created for public consumption, tough sanctions etc...while behind the scenes the key issues are negotiated in order for the fighting to stop.

If the eu imports 46% of its gas from russia, and russia turned off the tap, it won't only be homes affected but industry, so that reality will prevail in the end, but in the delay innocent citizens will die when the central outcome won't change.

It is worth considering what is being reported on both sides.

Russia have been messing around in the Atlantic for quite a while with their ships and Subs and are quite capable of cutting lines. The first cable was laid across the Atlantic in 1842 for morse code.

Ukraine isn't a nazi-state to begin with and they aren't a part of NATO either. This Pravda site has pieces portraying Ukraine as the big instigator... Really? We're going to take that serious now?

That being said Russia isn't just going to turn off the tap, it's a huge resource and they'll want to keep the money flowing. Neither is Europe going to stop importing gas from them, for now ofcourse. There'll be alot of sanctions but turning off the gas tap will be one of the last ones I reckon...

Innocent citizens are already dying in Ukraine.

Nobel peace prize for Mr Putin then for him to allow those that wish to flee to do so whilst invading their sovereign Country :thumbsup:

No the part that 'secret' talks are going on is what I was referring to, normally there'd be announcements that we will never negotiate with tyrants/aggressors, Realpolitik is going to be the order of the day in the end, and that includes the issue of reliance on russian energy.

Of course, citizens are dying, but more will in delays to the inevitable outcome. Zelensky and his close circle will likely be evacuated before someone else is appointed to negotiate a ceasefire with putin.

Didn't Boris say in his address to the Commons yesterday that negotiation with Putin is no longer an option?

Wow, that's one indomitable fellow. And now Russian soldiers within a stone's throw of the capital, you'd assume there'll be a protracted, violent guerrilla skirmishes to follow, as citizens are even urged to make their own Molotov cocktails

Now Putin's calling on Ukrainian soldiers to stage a coup, of their, quote, "Drug- addicted neo-Nazi leaders".

What calm, non- inflammatory and super- accurate rhetoric. The guy's one sandwich short of a picnic

He said there is a Russian hit squad gunning for him and his family. I'm surprised he didn't get his family out.
Probably the escape route to the west ukraine won't close till the last moment, if you intend to bolt at some stage is it responsible to draw citizens into street fighting alongside troops, just to delay things?

Can we all just take a moment to cringe at the alternative universe Hollywood celebs inhabit with their hilariously out of touch takes?

The worst thing to induce inner pain like I've never felt since Amazon's Rings of Power 'Superfans' video, merely days prior

As the leader I can see him staying to the last minute but why not get his family to safety?
