The gulf between the average player and those deemed more educated

Over the years I have had countless notifications for online casinos stating what their most popular slots of the past week/month/year has been and I couldn't help but notice a huge discrepancy between these casino's claims and the findings from the Casinomeister community.
I rarely see the lauded slots in casinomeister given a mention in these casinos top 5/10 lists.
Is there a reason for this?
Below is an example which I received today.

"Ever wondered which games are most popular at Casinoland?

Here our top 6 games (based on spins made):

1) Starburst
2) Book of Dead
3) Gonzo's Quest
4) Mega Moolah
5) Fire Joker
6) Guns N' Roses"

Yet the above casino have a lot of the slots that we talk about and play so much.

Is the Casinomeister community living in a bubble or are the general gaming population misguided?

Should we even believe these figures?

Starburst appears as the most popular on numerous casinos tbh. Not sure I believe it tbh but on all the gaming ads on TV starburst is shown the most.

NetEnt insists that their low variance games (e.g. Guns N Roses) are very popular as it appeals to a large part of online casino players who look for entertainment.

I doubt people play for pure entertainment, why bet with real money when you just want to be entertained? Who in his right mind doesn't think of a big win when he places a bet, be it on the lottery, slots or races? I do play for entertainment but that big win chance is always in the back of my mind. Otherwise , I could just play in FunMode.

I agree though with LordSilver that the majority of players have not much experience or even a clue about all the games, nor do they follow latest releases etc.

It's true, CM is the hub where most will get 'proper' games knowledge. Likely most forums that discuss the intricacies of the hardcore/ cult games contain more than your average shilly casino email.

So it becomes a platform for good and bad. I'd have never played BTG/ Bonanza had I not known about it from here, DOA etc

Worst are the TV ads that claim the most popular games to be Starburst, Rainbow Riches & bloody Da Vinci Diamonds :what:

It's pretty obvious that a new/casual player wants something to happen quickly rather than see their money go down whilst waiting for a big hit . Starburst is really easy to understand and the stars popup frequently and the win animation makes a big fuss etc . It's only after playing it quite a few times the casual player will realise that they're never really getting any real BIG wins . But expectations are different - no new/casual player is going to invest 100s of spins in Bonanza or Jammin Jars without prior knowledge of the game . They'll just play a few spins and think "this game sucks because nothing happens"
I think it's only after playing slots for a while that you start to chase the real big wins and get used to a lot of dead spins . The newer player prefers lower variance , more action slots I think

Having seen a lot of data working as online casino manager for years for one of the biggest operators, and having seen data from the B2B side as well, there is definitely a big discrepancy between popularity of slots between the CM crowd and the 'casual' players. I believe it's mostly because of 'discovery'. The average player only plays about 7 slots in his lifetime, and which those will be are largely in control of the operator by the position of slots in their lobby.

Starburst is an easy sell because it is so simple yet solid (I personally hate it). So it's a good initiator.

I find that kind of hard to believe.
To be clear - I'm not saying youre lying or anything of the sort - im just wondering if that's merely a fairly ...thin...view. I can see perhaps 7 in a session...but a lifetime?
I'd be interested in what various managers might add in their experience. From a player's perspective of knowing casual players I can say with certainty, they bounce around to whatever is new and shiny.
And positioning never much seems to be very static to anyone who has a fair selection and new games turnover.

My data is old admittedly (8 years) and this was a predominantly sportbook audience that was cross sold into casino, so a sizeable amount of players probably did not care much after their free spins, which would skew the data. But it is a fact that CM audience is a very small minority of people playing casino.

Oh, absolutely. Of all the RL gamblers, casual or otherwise, I'd say 99.9% never heard of CM (that I know personally) - not for lack of stellar info :p Just they tend to play B and M or get sucked in by FB or random searches etc.

Casinomeister represents a minority of the players I would say ("hardcore" players), most casual players wouldn't even know what CM is and they make up the big part of the slot community. So that list looks quite likely to be true.

I disagree... this forum, other forums, twitch and youtube streamers all seem to be fair representations of the gambling community.

The starburst claim is accurate. I spoke to a casino owner about these stats and he claimed alot of the reason for this is because most casinos hand out hundreds of thousands of freespins per month on such games as starburst and BOD. And starburst is also widely used for wagering tail ends of bonuses if it isnt bonus banned.

Starburst used to be the game where ppl would go to kill last cents/pennies of bonus. Since you can't chance the lines anymore I wonder, who would play it? You would have to be mad.

At one point around 30% of an entire casino's turn over would be on Starburst. I've been told it's no longer the case, but it's mind boggling nonetheless.

I play pretty hardcore.. many different games.. but Starburst has been for Years my no 1 game. Millions spins, all free spins counted, played with it. Still seeking to have full BARs! Unreal that is still missing. Also full sevens are lacking.

I would say from my experience that the punters are misguided. My journey into slots is less than a year following a night round a pals when we thought we would give a site a try. We did not have a clue......seriously, we didn't even know we could change the bet at first and were playing Gonzo's at £2 a pop with no idea of what the symbols meant or were doing and eventually cleared the wagering and he cashed out with just over £400! To start, we only joined the casinos with big offers and never thought of reading t&C's or forums or help files because you automatically put a certain amount of trust in these websites. To be honest, i never thought the industry would be geared up to rinse people in the sneaky ways some sites do. As a noob you tend to stray no further than the first page on Google and put a certain amount of trust in..... 'its gambling, it's heavily regulated'. I just played the prettiest games with the biggest bonuses on the sites that showed. Generally the service is poor on most sites I have found with a mafioso approach to offers and support leaving punters even more confused and misguided. I don't know any other industry like it and to gain the knowledge which allows me to play with a bit more clarity and confidence I have had to do a lot of research, to find and trust in Casinomeister, because the industry and information readily available is a minefield.

Cm members probably equates to less than 0.01% of the online population, only one streamer I watch ever mentions the site, its not as well known as the forum would like too think in the real world and besides there is generally only about 20 people who make frequent posts despite what it says about who is online, starburst is a great game for wagering better than most anyway. Many a time I have set the auto up walked away came back and only a few creds down. I can sit for hours chasing those three wilds its fun.

Starburst is the most popular because its always the go to slot for the free spins that casinos give away. 10p/cent for a spin with a very small chance of a big win is a very safe slot for giveaways.

Starburst is probably the most popular game because nearly all casinos give away welcome free spins on it.
edit: Johnny beat me to it.
