I've been sick so lately I've been sleeping a lot - earlier tonight I fell asleep and dreamed that I met this woman and we became friends. She seemed nice and I thought she'd be fun to hang around with. Then she came over to my house and started going through my cupboards and closets. In my dream I had these antique tins (I don't really know what they were, I don't have them in real life) and she said I should give them to her. She wanted to use them to store something in - I said no but I have these other tins that you're welcome to, I showed her where they were and she started looking through them and got this disgusted look on her face and sort of tossed them on the floor.

She looked in my jewelry box and picked up a necklace and said, "I'm going to borrow this" and stuck it in her pocket. Then she goes into the bathroom and I see a weird glow and go to the doorway and look, and she's got my big buck knife (which I do have in real life) and she's stabbed it through the side of a big candle and lit it and she's waving it around in the air dripping wax all over.

I told her to put it out and come have coffee and she said, "What's the point in having candles if you're not going to burn them?" and was trying to wedge the handle of the knife into the mirror and it was starting to crack while I trying to bring her attention to a candle holder and explain that I didn't leave candles burning because of the cats. So then she gives me this look like I'm a complete idiot, pulls the knife out of the candle, dumps the burning candle into the bathroom sink and walks out and tosses the knife on the table leaving a great big scratch and wax all over.

Then I woke up with a raging headache thinking, "I need to get this b*tch out of my house."

Weird the things you dream sometimes huh?

hi

Five Christian Prayers for Bedtime

Do you have a bedtime prayer? Throughout my childhood I said the one below (and the words are probably my own variation on the original). Here some other bedtime prayers to make for a good, peaceful sleep.

Jesus, tender shepherd, hear me,
Bless this little lamb tonight.
Through the darkness be down near me,
Keep me safe till morning light.

Oh Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed. Then in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last.
—Book of Common Prayer

Ah dearest Jesus, Holy Child,
Make thee a bed, soft, undefiled,
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber kept for thee.

Oh Lord, go with each of us to rest; if any awake, temper to them the dark hours of watching; and when the day returns, return to us, our sun and comforter, and call us up with morning faces and with morning hearts, eager to labor, eager to be happy, and if the day be marked for sorrow, strong to endure it.

Lord, it is night. The night is for stillness.
Let us be still in the presence of God.
It is night after a long day.
What has been done has been done;
What has not been done has not been done; let it be.
The night is dark.
Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives rest in you.
The night is quiet.
Let the quietness of your peace enfold us, all dear to us, and all who have no peace.
The night heralds the dawn.
Let us look expectantly to a new day, new joys, new possibilities.
In your name, we pray, Amen.

Weird the things you dream sometimes huh?

What you really needed to do was get that bitch out of your head.

I described a dream once to a woman who was thoroughly convinced I had stepped over and spent a wonderful evening with having tea and browsing old photo albums with someone from the afterlife.

I was going to sit here and give my opinions about why we dream, none of which have anything to do with psychology or the afterlife but it might be interesting to have a friendly debate about why the brain paralyzes the body so we don't run around the room while we sleep and then bombards us with images, sounds and smells. Personally, if I was going to design a brain I would give the organism a few hours of peace and quiet during a period of rest and recuperation but for one reason or another our period of rest for some people seems to be more hectic than their periods of conscious activity.

Also if you're a dream interpreter and wish to share that, don't be offended if I disagree. There are no concrete scientific facts about why we dream so nobody can claim absolute correctness on the matter but sharing different opinions might about it might be interesting.

Wasn't there a thread not too long ago were people told their strangest dreams? I'll see if I can find it. A lot of thoughts about why we dream came up there.
The mind is spooky and I'm still so happy that I never can remember my dreams.

Chayton, you seem a little too nice even in your dreams;)

I think I would call that a nightmare rather than a dream- dreams are strange things- sometimes they comfort and sometimes they are like a very bad acid trip - the strangest thing is that if we don't dream studies show it can lead to severe mental illness so they must serve some type of purpose.

On another note sorry to hear you have been so sick and hope you are starting to get better.

Yes, I've heard it said that the dream state seems to serve some sort of purpose other than simple rest. Obviously it would be much more efficient to simply shut down for several hours but without frequent REM sleep the brain suffers. I find it more likely that some parts of the brain don't have the ability to shut down and the thought process continues without a conscious level of reasoning. There seems to be a psychological process that tells us what is real and what isn't. Obviously it doesn't always work even when we are conscious since we can be easily fooled by simple optical illusions in images and it can be so broken that people can actually stand on a street corner and believe they are Napoleon Bonaparte at the battle of Waterloo.

During REM sleep this process doesn't seem to be active since most people claim the dreams seem as real as any waking event. Other people, including me have had dreams where we actually knew we were dreaming during the dream. Dreaming that you know you are in a dream can be both liberating and disconcerting. I also had a dream once that I was awake yet completely paralyzed in the dark. I vaguely remember wondering if my brain had initiated the paralysis that it always does during REM sleep but failed to enter the REM state. I also vaguely remember being strangely calm about the situation, thinking "Well, there's not much I can do about it but wait."

A lot of my dreams used to be kind of violent and gory so this one wasn't much of a nightmare really. It was just disturbing, kinda. First of all the disappointment...getting a new friend and having them turn out to be a b*tch who just wants to take or ruin your stuff. Then when she said about why have candles if you don't burn them...there's actually some truth to that. Saving things for a special occasion that never happens. And then I think there was a dig from my subconscious to me about being a little anal or OCD or selfish about my stuff.

I actually grew up with a brother who was like this woman in my dream, borrowing or taking stuff and either never returning it or wrecking it - and he's still like that. One year he lived rent free in a trailer my mom owned and after he moved out she couldn't sell it, he'd trashed it so badly. Among other things, he turned one of the bedrooms into a grow op and took a chainsaw to one of the support walls so the roof caved in. We don't talk anymore because he's got a lot of much worse qualities, believe it or not.

And after my dad died I found out he was a hoarder. I came back from the states when he was in the hospital, and when he passed away, seeing where he lived was like a kick in the stomach. It was absolutely devastating...if you imagine one of the worst episodes of that show 'Hoarders' it was like that. We had to clean it and I stayed drunk for almost 2 weeks just to be able to deal with it. That was before they started that show, so I didn't even know there was a term for it or that there are so many other people in the world living like that.

Anyhow...I suppose there's a reason for me to like order and keep things 'nice' and whatever, but I may lean a little bit too much to the other side, I don't know. I'm much better now, but I still get panicky if things start to get cluttered and if someone borrows something there's a part of my mind that thinks I won't get it back or it won't work if I do. Maybe subconsciously I'm trying to get a grip on this compulsive behaviour? In the dream when I didn't want to give her those antique tins, I opened a closet and told her to take some of these instead, and the closet was full of these old cookie tins and Christmas tins. Even in the dream I thought, "OMG why was I saving all of these?"

lol...sorry for the therapy session folks.

So are the dreams trying to subconsciously tell you something important or are they just random mental gibberish your brain experiences when you lack the conscious ability to reason through it?

Are they just like day dreams when your mind wanders without the level of consciousness required to separate them from reality... At least until you wake up and wonder why the hell you had anchovies before you went to sleep?

Personally I think my dreams are random gibberish mixed in with certain insecurities. Most times I dream about things that really don't have anything to do with my real life so those ones don't affect me at all. Sometimes I dream about people I know hurting me in some way, and that's insecurity. This particular one just happened to touch on stuff that does mean something because of certain experiences so that's why I'm seeing meaning in it.....?

A lot of dream interpretation stuff makes sense - like dreaming of flying equals feeling free, and losing something could be fear of loss, getting in an accident is fear of losing control. But I've read stuff like dreaming of insects means something is bugging you. Dreaming of spiders means you're going to win money unless you kill the spider, etc. I think most of that kind of stuff is hooey. Some people like spiders and some people are terrified of them, so if one person dreams of spiders it's about fear and others it's just normal. It doesn't necessarily mean anything at all, in my opinion. If you own a porsche and dream of driving a porsche it signifies nothing, you know what I mean?

Lately I've been worried about money and also I've been dreaming of finding money. So maybe those dreams of finding money are caused by my worry. Or maybe I'd still be dreaming the same way if I was rich, I don't know. But I'd sure like to find out!

Personally, I think dreams are just the detritus of the day; reliving and chucking out the excess, like when our senses filter out the extraneous.
FYI, never had a nightmare....ever. My dreams are generally fun and fanciful save for the 'stuck running' ones, though I really love the flying ones

I love Dreaming... I dream lot :)

Last night in my dream I won $1.5 Billion.. LOL ... If only that were remotely true.

I often dream that every time I am at the Sea, there's a Tsunami. I used to dream I could fly all the time. I would boast to my friends about it in my dream and demonstrate... Felt so awesome ...

Then there were those Tornado dreams... Somewhere theres always a multitude of twisters and I'm avoiding them...

Then I have those dreams where I meet a Girl... Absolutely fall in love with her and wake up really missing her (Guys ever had those?) ...

I read somewhere that people in our dreams actually exist. We may have seen them somewhere and our brain just uses that image when we dream....

Apparently BLIND people do not see images but feel and hear things in their dreams? They are called 'Auditory dreams' - This is especially true for people born blind... They also say that people who become blind later in life see images in their dreams, but they are from memory only.

Dreams are strange...

Some good points here about how everyone experiences things differently and people equate different images with different meanings. This is why I believe that generalized dream interpretation is basically baloney. I do believe that dreams can mean something since the images are coming from our own brains. Things we worry about or desire can manifest itself in sleeping dreams just as easily in daydreams. But I have a hard time believing in the standardized interpretations such as dreams of flying being a desire for freedom. I just don't think the human brain is as poetic as that on a subconscious level. A dream of flying more than likely means you would like to be able to fly and a dream of being free would be more apt to manifest itself as a dream of you walking out with a suitcase and flipping your spouse the bird.

On a side note, if you find yourself dreaming about killing someone you might want to get help.... Unless it's a spouse.... That's probably not that uncommon.

Okay, well someone please riddle me this....

Last night I dreamt of coming upon pounds and pounds of raw bacon. Swear to God! So bizarre! LOL And it was all over the place! My car, my home, my clothes, my hands, all I kept thinking in my dream was this is a greasy mess.

Yes Chayton, dreams are certainly strange at times. I do notice that when I am sick or coming down with something they are more vivid than usual. BTW I have a cold setting in.:(

Hope you feel better soon Chayton!

ahahahaah....that's an odd one. Although I saw on the news just a few days ago that the price of bacon is supposed to skyrocket, so maybe your dreaming of bacon is equal to dreaming of money? lol...or maybe you're not coming down with a cold, maybe you're getting swine flu! :p

There's a guy who has a recurring role in some of my dreams that....well I don't know if it's love, but there are definite sparks flying. But interestingly enough, he never bloody shows up when I dream I'm unattached, he turns up when (in my dream) I'm married or with a boyfriend or otherwise unavailable. :( Ah well he's probably too young for me anyhow.

SWINE FLU! MADE ME SNORT! HAHA!

Maybe he has commitment issues and likes to play it safe.

I have commitment issues. I get tired of people saying I should be committed.
