Statues

Yer

Removing monuments & landmarks, that's for Bristol Council to decide, who I'm sure would have given in to public pressure and removed it, despite a decade's campaigning to have it removed. Now more than ever I would have thought.

But certainly not a paid rabble of students and unemployed thinking they can circumvent law on behalf a violent political movement purporting to 'represent' a demographic.

Because then as you know I'll just toddle off to Parliament Square and dismount ol' Nelson Mandela BECAUSE I CAN

And, of course, I'd be within my rights in this feelings-based alternative universe we live in, because he was after all a Commie terrorist insurgent that advocated the slaughter of anti-apartheid protesters, amongst many other things

And that is bullshit, this is not school.
Booooooo

Also a bit disappointed to find out that Jen Reid was just some random protester.
Not like theres a shortage of people to choose from.

And i dont mean they should have choosen Pooh, he obviously has a bunch of statues already for his great deeds.
But theres a bunch of black people throughout history that has done neat things, so i think its weird to choose some random stylist from the uk.

This is an excellent piece on the BBC website. Written by a Nigerian reporter, and putting a sense of context around slavery 2 - 300 years ago.

You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

Saw that and applauded it - I loved the comments that " Buying and selling of human beings among the Igbo had been going on long before the Europeans arrived." and " It would be unfair to judge a 19th Century man by 21st Century principles." - stick that up your reparations pipe and smoke it was my first thought :).

Unfortunately it's an easy out for some people who have failed in life to blame their failings on historical events no matter how far back they occurred - it absolves them of responsibility for their own shortcomings. From a personal perspective I am adamant that I would have been the CEO of Microsoft if those pesky Roman's hadn't enslaved my ancestors 2000 years ago. I have written to the Italian Prime Minister in relation to reparations.

I assume the only reason he hasn't responded is due to COVID 19 taking up his time. Really looking forward to that big fat cheque when it arrives.

Oh so they do know how to remove statues then. Pity they prevaricated for so long over taking down a statue of a known slave trader who was responsible for tens of thousands of deaths.
Clearly a statue of a known slave trader is wrong, although I note the following " Colston supported and endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, London "

Not sure that replacing it with a statue of an activitist doing a "black power" salute while wearing a black panther outfit is any less racist. He may have been a slave trader but he seems to have contributed more to Bristol as whole than that non-entity will ever do.

I wonder if she will refuse to be treated for free at one of the hospitals he endowed :)

And this is exactly why everything needs to be looked at in the correct context.
Slavery is wrong. It is wrong now, it was wrong then, but people involved in the slave trade then had been brought up with it as a normality. They lived according to their times, they contributed to their communities, their cities and improved the lives of many. This does not mean what they did was right, but in the context of the times in which they lived it was the way of the world.
We cannot change the past and we cannot rewrite history.

Far too easy to cite slavery throughout the ages done by other 'peoples', but that would be classed a 'whataboutism'

Also failed to spot the large protests at the recent unearthing of modern slavery in Leicester. Why ever would that not be deemed important by the masses, and where's the outrage??

Oh yes I forgot, that outrage is selective and doesn't tie in with the current narrative

Can’t we have a playford statue?..
loads of muscles (steroids)
Big smiles, as I’m always happy...and possibly a kebab in hand?...
it would be superb, totally diverse and appeals to all...

I seem to recall i already made a statue of you.
Kebab, Dr.pepper & tatoo if i remember correct.

The rewriting of history is usually carried out via the leadership of autocracies or other extremists. Like Russia removing Trotsky from the podium when he was addressing a crowd with Lenin, in a photograph in their school history books. Hide it away, it never happened right?

Wouldn't a fair solution be to leave the Coulston statue but place a plate on the plinth explaining that while he was a major benefactor to Bristol, some of his fortune was based on slavery, a practice which was and is abhorrent blah blah? So we can all see both sides of the story?

Anyway, I'm off to London to vandalize Karl Marx's monument, the great man whose philosophies have led their adherents to slaughter or starve approximately 100m people since his writings, a cool 1m deaths a year. I do not expect to be challenged, arrested or reported on negatively. Hitler doesn't get a statue as he was positively c-rated, a mere 25 million deaths were attributed to him and his genocide/wars.

But hey, Marx and the communists were the cool guys, right?

I've already declared my removing Mandella from Parliament Square, when that goes unchallenged (as I expect it to) we can meet up and take a selfie, then celebrate our 'achievements' over a pint

No, I suggest we simply get an old Bridgestone radial and place it on the shoulders and set it alight. Toast a few marshmallows in the flames while we consume said beer....

Wow, just saw the PL scores on the final day!

Super Jack Grealish scoring an 85th- minute goal to condemn Bournemouth to the drop, or else Villa would have gone down on goal-difference!

To go with his single-handedly dragging Villa into the Premier League to begin with!! And I'm not even a Villa fan!!

Build a statue of this man already, if Villans haven't already done so
