Friday night saw the news that ex Preston North End player Sir Tom Finney had died aged 91.
A one club man, a rarity in the modern game, making 433 appearances for his club and scoring 187 goals. 40 appearances in the FA cup with 23 goals.
Also a tireless worker for many a charity in and around the city of Preston.
Paid £14 a week, he did have the chance to sign for an Italian club, in what would, in those days have been a lucrative deal. However the deal was quashed and Sir Tom would remain with the club for the remainder of his career.
Sir Tom never won any major titles with Preston North End, coming close in the 1952/53 season almost winning the league but finishing as runners up on goal average to Arsenal, and then in 1954 being beaten in the FA cup final by West Brom 3-2.
When speaking about Sir Tom, Bill Shankly once said "he could play in his overcoat all day and still be the best player on the pitch", his team mates paid similar compliments, stating that when they were tired they would just pass the ball to Finney and ask him to 'run around for 10 minutes'.
The word legend is used way too freely in todays game, but it is certainly applicable to Sir Tom. A legend, a genius, a gentleman.
