One of the questions that gets asked in this thread is - why is Trump so disliked. Why is there so much hatred of the man himself, rather than his policies.
Trump has an unfortunate physical demeanor - the hair, the orange tan, the panda eyes, the constant gesticulating with his (tiny) hands, his constant use of bigly, better, best - which make him a sure-fire target for caricature.
Neil Kinnock in the UK also had the same unfortunate demeanor, to the extent that the Labour Party was considered unelectable while he was its leader. He went on to have a stellar career in the European Union as a European Commissioner, Vice-president of the European Commission, and numerous high-level UK positions since. He made a career where his physiognomy didn't matter, but his intelligence and talent did.
It's a sad state of affairs but in today's fitness-obsessed, celebrity-obsessed, youth-obsessed culture, everything is about how you look, rather than what you do. And this, I believe, is why DT is regarded as such a figure of fun.
But it doesn't answer the question as to why there is such divisiveness across America and its attitudes towards Trump.
He is widely considered to be a liar, bigot, racist, con-artist, failed bankrupt, unable to command loyalty, turns on a dime to stab loyal staff in the back, etc. In other words, he is completely unpresidental.
Further, his supporters are in turn uneducated, gullible, racist, bigoted, misogynistic etc. And his detractors are the ones who are able to see through his bluster and his lies.
BUT... that is nowhere near the truth at all. I happened across a very enlightening article - admittedly pre-election - that more than clarifies the position of both Trump and anti-Trump supporters. It is definitely worth a read.
"...where Trump opponents view Trump presidency as a disaster and the end to the US as we know it, Trump supporters hope for the creative destruction in the government, where Trump won't have enough power to do real damage to the country because of the limits on executive power, but will be able to stir everything up enough to bring about some change."
Anti-Trump supporters "value civility, respect, politeness above all - and for them Trump is unacceptable. Trump supporters "view (the) economy to be the most important thing for the US and is of the opinion that too much politeness in political discourse leads to groupthink and lack of progress."
