President Elect Obama

Now that the voting and debates have ended I wanted to start an President thread so we can stay on track.


I for one am not here to gloat and just wanted to say how proud I am to be an american today/yesterday. I DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE and anyone else who voted for Obama made a difference in History forever and should also be proud of themselves. This goes to show that it does matter. We need everyones vote. I just cant believe the turn out at the polls. This new generation of new voters of this "X" generation made me proud today. We as older citizens(over 35 lol) sometimes think "omg, and this is our future" when we see adult kids running around with skateboards, pants halfway down their asses, ipods stuck in their ears, ecstacy parties and it shows one thing , You cant judge anyone, they did their job and voted and it made a difference. This post probably doesnt make sense to you but it does me LOL.

Anyway, I feel we are in the right direction. I feel people of all color have no excuses as to where the world can take them. Its all about what you strive for and how hard a person pushes themselves. Amen !!

edit: Nevermind. I just saw on CBS' map that not all precincts had reported by the time they closed up shop....not sure what the final numbers are.

congrats to pres. elect. obama , and to sen. john mccain for his selfless years of serving this country since he was a late teenager up to the point of running a decent presidential race at the age of over 70, thats alot of years of

It was split , 2 of the counties were at 60% and 2 were at 54% for Obama

FOur years ago was at 44% overall and this year was 52%

I just wanted to say how mightily impressed I am with the new president of America.

There does appear to be something very special about Barack Obama. First impressions are that are that he is impeccably dressed, well groomed and very polite (charming qualities for a man ) and initial observations are that he appears to be a great speaker, coming over exceptionally confident and courageous.

I think the US have been totally blessed in being able to have a man such as Obama in charge. This is a man that has worked hard for where he has got today. He is also a people's person - chosen by the people.

This man is going to be one of the greatest leaders ever to lead a country, if not the world.

America - I really hope you realise how lucky you guys are.

Oh and Dubya - it's time to have a little lie down dear, enough's enough now. There, there...

Speaking as a Canadian, and another "outsider", I totally agree with you j_l. As Win said, time will tell, but my gut tells me you are right.

And for anyone who worries about his lack of experience, my own feeling is that he chose Joe Biden as his VP for this exact reason. How many years experience does he have....somewhere in the neighbourhood of 30 plus years? He won't be making the decisions, but you can bet his input will be highly valued, especially when it comes to foreign policy and relations. I like Biden as well...and to me, this was a dream ticket.

IF we are right j_l, God knows the American people deserve leadership like this, after having to endure the last eight years of Bush and his policies. I wish them, and him, all the best.

I am British, but live in Eastern Europe. To be frank I'd given up hope that the American people would not only have the choice to vote for, but would also actually elect what appears to be a normal human being. I despaired that people could be so stupid as to vote-in (twice!) the previous intellectually challenged incumbent, Mr. G.W.Bumble-Mumble. And as for his cronies, I never, ever wish to hear that ignorant, aggressive, snide manipulator of fools, Mr. Donald (three almost identical adjectives to every noun) Rumsfeld again! (before you complain of hypocrisy, my 3 adjectives are both necessary & multi-flavoured )

My dear American friends, I'm proud of you.

Also, we can't forget that Obama seems to be more in touch with 'normal' people as well. McCain was just 'out there'....hell, he didn't even know how many homes he owned or what kind of car he drove. How was he supposed to relate to the working class; especially the families that are barely able to meet their mortgage payments?

This is exactly what I hoped for. We have posters from three different countries right here, who all approve. If he can unite people around the world in this way, that is a great start.

Regardless of what country you live in, if people are hopeful, happy, and united....that simply can't be a bad thing.

And yes Win, I agree that he "seems" to be just a normal everyday guy, which I find immensely appealing. As does Joe Biden. Came from a middle class Irish Catholic family. And in his VP debate, made a point of mentioning that while he has a better than average life now, he has never forgotten the struggles his own family went through financially and otherwise.

When his wife and child were killed in a car accident, he still showed up for work everyday, and spent his nights at the hospital with this two young sons, who were also injured. He was actually sworn into the Senate at his children's hospital bedside. The two boys went on to recover, and he became a single parent, until he remarried. So the man knows tragedy, and struggle. And he hasn't forgotten any of it.

I didn't mean to sidetrack into Biden, but to me, they sort of seem to go hand in hand with the real, down to earth people thing. I also think this may have been part of the reason that Obama chose Biden as his running mate.

In any event, I look forward to great things from what I hope will turn out to be a great man.

Yes, Obama and Biden are tied together now. Obama made it clear during (the last?) debate that he's going to bring Biden in to discuss issues before making a decision. That sure beats the "lame duck" that's currently holding the office of VP.

I'll be curious to see how Harper and Obama will get along...with Harper being a Conservative and Obama a Democrat (Liberal in Canuck speak, lol). I guess it will depend on how Obama plans on governing....left, left-centre, or centre? It will be interesting.

I'm also curious to see how things in Afghanistan are going to play out. I "think" that Obama has given a 16 month timeframe for pulling troops out of Iraq, but has he not also stated he wants to amp it up in Afghanistan? I know that our government wants all Canadian troops out of Afghanistan by 2011...but will this be extended now? If so, it's okay by me..if they held a referendum on it, I'd vote yes (and yes, I have an ex brother-in-law in the military and another friend, so I'm not completely out of the loop). I think that Afghanistan is where the efforts should be concentrated, and always have thought that. That's just a personal opinion.

Will Harper be willing to follow Obama places that he wouldn't go for Bush?

I'm sure he will...Obama has that mesmerizing gravitas about him that can influence others and get them caught up in the ether without them even knowing it !!

Admittedly I voted for McCain although I whole-heartedly believe Obama can be an excellent president if my hardheaded, fellow conservatives will support him rather than try to drag him down. Now is the true test of charater for both parties.
