Older women with long hair, yes or no?

I've had past shoulder length or longer hair most of my life. The last few years I've just let it grow because...well, to be honest I'm lazy. It's currently around mid-back length and it looks ok on me and it's healthy and everything but...I'm 47 years old, maybe I should think about getting an old lady haircut. Or at least a middle aged lady haircut. ;)

Although my grandma's sister who was in her 90's had hair down to her butt, she always wore it up though. (her hair, that is :p)

So what do you think - long hair on older women is ok or does it look stupid?

Well.... I've always been a bit torn on this subject. Please bear in mind that I'm a bit older than you. I love long hair. On men, on women.... doesn't matter. But it no longer looks good on me and is too much trouble to care for. And when it was uber long it gave me a headache. So now, I have an almost-old lady hair cut. I tend to wear it kind of short (midway to shoulder) in the summer months, and longer (shoulder length) during cooler months.

Does your hair grow fast? Why not try just have a couple or 3 inches off it and have it shaped a little. New almost middle aged hair cut, if you will. LOL Something fresh and new, but not too different. :) And if you go to the beauty salon to have it done, for heaven's sake find a stylist that isn't OCD about cutting it all off. Some can be really scissor happy. :(

If it looks good keep it.

I actually find it easier to deal with my hair when it's longer - when it's hot outside it's up in a pony or some such, and it's long enough now that I can stick it up in a bun kind of thing and wrap it in such a way I can hold it with just a pencil or a pen or a chopstick or whatever. It's cool to be able to do that without dragging a bunch of pins or hairclips around with me.

On the flip side, in the winter when it's staticky it's always flying up and getting caught in the shoulder belt thingie in the car and some nights when I'm not sleeping well it wraps around my neck and tries to kill me.

oh yeah and if someone finds my hair in the food I can't blame the dog. :o

@Mousey - I know that's another thing - the place I used to go to has shut down so I'll have to find a new place - that's kind of a pain because I've had some experiences with new hairdressers doing stupid things. One was the woman who owned the salon, she put the cape on me, cut my hair, then when she took the cape off there was a handful of hair that she hadn't bothered pulling out that was like 6 inches longer than the rest.

Okay, I'm 52 and have had approximately 7 haircuts in my lifetime. And the last 4 have been after the age 45. My hair was down to my knees, very thick (almost the thickness of my wrist when braided), but it was very heavy and took a long time to dry and I always had it pulled back because I worked 6-7 days aweek. I donated my braided (it was 3 1/2 feet long) when I finally made the decision to cut it off. The hair salon refused to make the first cut, I had to do it to show them I was serious. LOL

I now wear my hair about shoulder length, maybe a little longer. Then when I get sick of it I get it cut to about 2 inches long so it takes a while to grow out. I hate hair I have to fuss over, wash and wear all the way. It's a personal choice, and heck, it grows back if I don't like it. Told my kids I was going to dye the white hair bright pink or green or some weird shade. Ny grandsons thought it was a good idea LOL, my daughter and son didn't think it was though :D, they have no sense of humor sometimes!

When I cut my hair back in the summer, it was down to my waist. I have really thick, curly hair so it's less trouble long or really short. LOL! Decided I was going to grow it out again because I like it better. I am way older than you are.

Who says older women can't have long hair? If you want your hair long, leave it alone. If you want it short, cut it. Make yourself happy and to hell with the rest.

Amen to that.....My hair has been short, long, short and now shoulder length again. I find it hides a multitude of sins at my age (I think I'm older than all of you:p). Put it up when it's hot and leave it down when it's cold and color it whatever you want!

Thanks everyone! It's odd but you know what started it - my aunt said something to me last summer about it being time to cut my hair - now that I'm 'older'.

Crazy to listen to the opinion of someone who has been doing home perms for the last 50 years :eek2: but since I decided to splurge a bit on ME when I get my withdrawal I thought, hmmm...maybe she's right and I'm too old for long hair.

Anyhow I like it long, so I'll maybe just get a trim or a few inches lopped off. Besides if I get it cut short I can't hide my tattoo if I need to! :p

I'm also 48 Chayton, and my hair is about as long as yours by the sounds of it. I have no intentions of chopping it off anytime soon, although a decent cut is definitely in the works. Oh....and a date with a colour bottle, lol.

Me too Pina...of course grey is a color. I'm actually telling people that it's platinum streaks, so now they think I'm trendy!

all these animated disney movies have some funny scenes, the toy stories are also funny.

sorry for the derail

Never really liked short hair on women. I mean boy short. shoulder length is nice.

Buwahhhhahaha... I have that problem! :p If I have my hair down, it always gets in my food  The majority of the time its up unless Im going out, then I might let it down. Though those times are few and far between now:)

Dont cut it. If you want it looking shorter, that is the joys of having rubber bands, clips etc etc;)

Personally the only reason I think another female would tell you to cut it is because they're probably jealous that you have the long luxurious hair:lolup: You are never too old to have long hair. What a crock of &@$* hehe:D

As I'm a "mature" :p woman of 45 with long, thick hair down to my ass, and felt I should comment.

It's all about you...how "you" feel with your hair. If you don't like it long, cut it. If you like it, maintain it and wear it with pride.

My 90 year old grandmother had the same head of hair I do, but blonde, and I remember her waking up wandering around with her silver locks and either braiding or putting in bun for a day, and she looked fab either way.

Seriously, the adage "you are only as old as you feel" is correct. Start putting limitations now on yourself because of supposed stereotypes and it's all downhill from here :p

OmG! This thread is so relevent to me, as I have decided to take a whole week off from work at the end of March as I am turning 50....I decided to take this time out for myself as I haven't had a vacation in years! BUT the whole idea of taking time out is because I need to pay attention to my appearance!

The other thing that prompted me to take time out for myself , was that I received my ...yes...ugh...my AARP card in the mail!..I feel 22 not 50!

BUT I think I look 60 BECAUSE I have neglected my hair for too long!

I have been wondering the same thing Chay! ...short or long ? Let go grey or keep it coloured?

So , my decision is to keep it a little shorter than it is right now...maybe 2 inches below shoulder and keep it maintained as dark brown, brunette.

Wow...unreal the timing of this!

Long hair is cool and comes in handy at Halloween times where you can let it cover all your face and pretend to be cousin Itt, saving yourself a small fortune on Halloween costumes ;).

When Uncle Fester farted,
They dipped their d**ks in custard,
The Addams Family......do do do do"

Sorry could'nt resist. :D

I apologise to those I did not offend.

Oh BTW long hair is nice, but its horses for courses and it just doesn't suit some people. Anyway, its only a covering for the mind which is what really floats my boat. The "skin deep" saying is all too true.

We're all in the same boat here Secret! I keep forgetting how old I am - til I'm sitting on the floor and try to get up.

Ray's sister, when I met her she had fairly short brownish hair. She got tired of dying it and one day she went in and got it cut really short - I'm talking short, like about 2" long, and she quit coloring it so it has a lot of grey now (imagine the female George Clooney) - and it looks absolutely fabulous on her. It looks so good and suits her so well you can't imagine her ever wearing her hair any differently. And of course she loves it because it's really low maintenance.

So her hairstyle would look horrible on me, but if I could get one that suits me as well and is as easy to care for as hers, I'd be thrilled. Maybe I'll try to get on one of those makeover shows and have some expert give me the perfect haircut/color for me and my lifestyle and a whole new wardrobe. And all without me having to pay for it! ;)

LOL! Your post had me rolling on the floor!!...Yup, I know how it is to try and get up again!...so funny!

Seriously, I have been thinking about just shearing it all off , like an aussie sheep (Hi Nifty..lol) and do a start over like Ray's sister...but I have a big head! and I would look like a grey coloured 'medecine ball'!

As for the makeover shows...I am up for that!

I enter any giveaway contests that are up for grabs...I am waiting to win the HGTV dream home give away!

On my way home?.....I am looking for balloons and TV camera crews waiting for me to surprise me with a new home!!! LOL...I'll settle for a new hairdo, right now!

I would love to be able to wear mine 2" long... just blow dry with some gel for a sort of spiky look. (Wish they'd had the red/purple stuff for streaks back when I was young enough.) *sigh* But my face and head is too big for such (I can relate to the billiard ball look LOL)... so... Now that I wear mine shorter, I get perms to give it a bit of body and some curl. I'd like to color, but the maintenance would be an insane merry go round with perms involved. My hair grows at an insane pace and the battle of the new root shine would be a nightmare. Tried it before... too much hassle... I require wash and wear hair. :)

I've been trying to grow mine out after someone told me that it was an older person's haircut. I am 25 and hardly ever get id'ed which makes me feel bad so maybe they are right.

I think that the only reason to have it cut short is if you either don't want to or cannot take care of it properly anymore. Other than that grow it to your toes if that's what you prefer! :D No matter what you choose though, the hair doesn't really matter - it's what's inside that counts right?

You got that right! As long as I like my hair well enough and hubby still smacks me on the butt and calls me his Hot Momma, all is right in my little world. :D

 frisky frisky.

@ Jazzy, some women look great with short hair, but I don't think I'm one of them. I tried one of those virtual hair makeovers one day for fun and it was actually pretty hilarious. Maybe it was the photo I used (with no makeup) but with short hair I looked like a cranky little boy. :p

My mother in law had the most beautiful natual brown hair down to her waist for many years. As she grew older, her hair started turning grey and she started to become looking "washed out" She wouldn't dye her hair and it became a salt and pepper look that aged her beyond her years and drug her face down with the dark brown on the bottom.

One day we went to visit her and was totally blown out of the water. She cut her hair off! Just above shoulder length and she looked AMAZING! The beautiful silver grey was more intense now then when her hair was long. The dead length she kept carrying around with her was truly an image changer for the worse.

Another friend (in her 60's) also had some beautiful silver hair and it was really short, but styled to perfection.

I guess , as we age, our image changes along with the style of hair. I have always wanted long flowing blonde hair again (which I had during my pre-thirty years) but every time I allow my hair to grow, I feel so unkempt. I too have body waves put into my hair (for volume and styling) and never allow my hair below my shoulder. I saw what a tranformation my friend and mother in law had by removing all the "heaviness" around their faces and vowed NEVER to go long again at my age. (over 50)

I see many women that are older with long hair that just "let it go" thinking it looks good because of the length, but in realty, it looks ragged if not properly trimmed and every once in a while, style cut. Grey(on top)/brown/black(on bottom) mixture is not a pretty picture if one really looks at their hair, just as my mother in law found out.

My sister, that is older than me has long hair to the middle of her back and has hers styled and dyed every six weeks religiously. I asked her one day, why do you go to so much trouble when you can just cut it and go natural?(she would have the beautiful silver) She said the same thing I thought. If older ones wants long hair, then you should take pride in it and keep it to where it looks the best....at any cost.

Me...I am all for my short/mid length colored/styled cut that is easy to keep and greyless because my grey is the ugly "yellow" grey, not the gorgeous silver that some women are gifted with. So, I stay the strawberry/ash blonde I have always been.

Once when I was a teenager I met this couple - I was walking and they'd been in an accident so I stopped to help - anyhow they were an older Chinese couple, and the lady had this kinda frizzy afro hairstyle that she dyed pitch black. The reason I knew it was dyed was because it had grown out about an inch and a half and all the new growth was very white, it was the oddest thing because it looked like her hair was actually hovering several inches above her scalp. Funny I met them when I was like 15 years old and I've never forgotten her hair.

LOL - and it's not just women who try to hold on to their youth, once Ray had some man come into his store, he was bald like Patrick Stewart with the little fringe of hair, but he had that paint stuff on the top of his head. I don't know if you remember, it was on late night infomercials, if you're thinning it's supposed to hide your scalp from showing through. But this man didn't have any hair at all on top, just paint! Ray said he had a really tough time talking to him without laughing - and he said he had to really stop himself from asking, "Do you really think you're fooling anyone?"

Geez, who knew she was lazy?

Alot of chicks suit short hair. I am, unfortunately not one of them:p My self and my youngest have longish hair. Im just too lazy to cut it, though Im quick enough with the hair dye when I find a grey one:lolup:

My teen aged daughter keeps her hair short:cool: Suits her to a tee :) She does have hair extensions though and shes quite the pro at putting them on when she feels like something different;)

Had to add this pic, found it on my favourite Adult Humor site, so cracked me up!

Thanks Chayton, this thread inspired me to get a new do, it's been absolutely ages since I've been to the hairdressers, my hair is 3/4 lengths down my back, it's layered but the layers have grown out, also I haven't dyed my hair in 5 years, pleased to report I have not got 1 single grey hair:D, my dad was grey by the time he was 19 (I know lol).

I've got golden brown hair so maybe thinking about dyeing it aswell, maybe red? maybe auburn?

ps hairdresser is booked, looking forward to being pampered:) tomorrow morning:D

I've had short hair, long hair, blond hair, red, black, purple, orange (happened from a mistake when I was 17 lol)

What colour has everyone here had their hair dyed at some point?

I would have my hair the style I feel most comfortable with Chay, if you do decide to get it cut and don't like it, it will always grow back :-)
