There was a bio on Ella Fitzgerald recently on PBS, it was interesting, and kind of sad that her personal life was such a mess. Philistine that I am, I most remember her "Is it live, or is it Memorex?" commercials, but if you've ever heard one of her scat recordings, it is just amazing - somehow, she draws you in and charms your socks off. Her scats were very impromptu, so you wouldn't have anyone covering an Ella Fitzgerald scat, but listen to this:



 
Mary's Prayer - as a college student, I heard this all the time, but it doesn't have a easily identifiable title, and I don't know, I just never wrote it down, lol. But I saw it recently on one of those 80's compilations, and was like, oh! I remember this one - it was a very hard time in my life and listening to this song gave me some kind of inner strength:
