Today I thought it would be a great day to check my HD for some adware.. Usually I use Ad-aware. But today I used Spy sweeper from webroot.

anyways... I was shocked to find out that I had "ICU-Surf" System Monitoring on my Harddrive!

I managed to find the Program in my registry..

One registry log refered to this linklocation:

Old / Expired Link

Kcasino is not a valid domain anymore and Casino Central is a Casino Portal!!

ICU was modified last on October 2. 2003. Could not figure out when it was created. Right now I am searching all other files which got created or modified same day and around the same time

Around the same day and time Intercasino GE , Spinpalace, Club Dice Poker, Omni Version 4+ modified files on my computer. At that point all those casinos have been already on computer and I didn't downloaded any others!

Don't want to accuse any of the above mentioned casinos but I am just trying to figure what's going on.

Any Ideas

Sometimes these spyware programs misidentify casino software as spyware. PestPatrol is infamous for this. Which spyware definitions are you using on SpySweeper (click help - about)? I've got pretty much the same casinos on my computer as you have, and I'll do a re-scan with spysweeper to see if I get the same results, assuming we're using the same definitions. Did it actually find that program or just an entry for it in your registry?

I'm curious to know why out of all the hundreds of different software products on my computer, all my spyware programs single out casino software as spyware? You said that casinos get misidentified as spyware, but could it be that they are doing something shady in the way that they are installed on a computer? Just wondering if you know why this happens jpm.
Thanks

kscasino is kingsolomons.
like grandacescasino is gacasino.

Don't know about spyware tho.

Well I think its because you have humans categorizing programs for these lists that the anti-spyware programs use as their database. And if they choose one RTG, Playtech, or MG casino program and label it as spyware, that will then label all of the same vendor's casino programs as spyware as well, since they are all the same base programs with just a different front end.

For instance, if you have 2 playtech casinos on your machine, look at the executables (.exe or .com), .dll, and .mpg files for each one side by side. You'll see that most of them are identical in name & size (and content if you dug into them). Every time I download a new playtech casino, I have to expect pestpatrol to come up with about 50+ false positives and then exclude them from further detection. (It cracks me up that it identifies the .mp3 files that make up all the game sounds as spyware.)

So all it would take is one person erroneously labelling a casino install as spyware and that would label dozens of other casino installs as spyware as well. Many of the spyware vendors also let you submit suspected spyware to them for addition to the database, so that's another way things get miscategorized. The same thing happens with web filters, someone makes a mistake when they categorize a site and everyone who gets that filter definition gets blocked.

Its even happened with antivirus software before. The string they used to identify a virus matched a legitimate program and people were getting false positive hits. It happens less with virus/worms because they are just one program and do something specific, but spyware is so complex and convoluted that its just not an exact science when it comes to identifying it. At least not yet, but it probably never would be.

Sorry JPM, you have good post... but i'm lazy to read that. :D

Little tired.

Ok, my point is. If you use crap-anti-spy-prgrams, like Spy Sweeper or something like that. You get a lot of fake alert. Or if you use best anti-spy-programs like Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D (both FREE), with latest databse!!!, with latest software!!!, with correct settings!!!...
you still get few malwares in Ad-Aware (recent versions). There is new "Microgaming"-malware, and old "Golden Palace"-malware. ("Golden Palace" malware = all playtech casinos. Wrong alert. Like MG-malware)

Ok what are those? Do i destroy my computer, and burning that in somewhere: NO! ;)

Those are only to your "username"-identity-helpers to Casino server. So because those codes keep inside data (username, even settings, etc), what going to network, of course anti-spy-programs alert you... because program thing, that data flow - go without your permission to network.
But it is Casino-program! Of course data go to network!

Wanna proof?

Update your AD-aware to latest version. (Freeware)
Do not say, i have already Ad-Aware...from year 2003, or even last summer

Version: 1.05 SE Pers.
Last update: Sep 24, 2004
AND UPDATE AFTER YOU INSTALL PROGRAM (now latest database 07/10/04)
Check that settings is ok!

[Do Not Do This! Until you wannna see what happend]:

Make full scan, and if you get "Microgaming"-malware. Remove it!
Then launch your MG Casino.... and hahaa!!! All settings is gone. You have to even write your username, etc... Make new layout to BJ-autoplay, etc...
Because all settings is gone.

My previous post:

Against Americans? No. Just from news, and this Jackson thing was funny :)
But this news was even in Finland. But honestly... it is not about Americans only... everyone should know!

Huuuuuuuuh

Actually, AdAware and Spybot both miss WAY too much stuff. And they aren't proactively protecting your computer against future infections. SpySweeper does and finds stuff the other 2 miss. PestPatrol finds the rest that the other 3 missed. Be safe, run all 4 but don't rely on the 2 most popular to clean everything, they miss far too much (and I update adaware every time I run it).

But dear JPM... i hope you get my point ;)

Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D , whatever....
over 30% own some critical spyware in their system.

Probably more like 80% now. Its incredible how many people I hear complaining about their new toolbars that just appeared and all the new popups they are getting. Spyware should be punishable by death!

Yes, you are right. I just pick this number, because i just read latest IT news. And this 30% (actually 1/3 = ~33%) mean very critical... like dialer, backdoor-program, even some are also in virus, worm, trojan horse, malware, spyware, trackware, etc category.

Happy surfing! :D

Actually i don't panic. I run programs regularly. I trust, that my PC is clean. But i read that some people don't even know what is firewall, spyware, etc?! And there is still a lot of people, who don't know about viruses at all.

Nowdays, Viruses, Worms, even spywares, etc are only some kind of entertainment, competition, challenge to Hackers, etc (programming)

My spy-ware, your spy warez

hey!

My 2cents.... One man's trash is another's treasure. I think the point made is this: "There are sweepers that include casino's because of some error made by including them into a spyware database."

Solution: If you know the casino, and have played or served through them before, you will have these files on your machine. You can choose to keep'em or dump'em. There are some shady casino's out there... yet, unless you have lsot major sums of money, they are pretty harmless.. also, keep in mind about the cookies (I know, whole new entity altogether but still) that dump info on your puter in xchange for info FROM your puter.

*giggling* would you believe, that in all these years, i have never run a firewall, nor a antivirus, nor anything else that could 'protect' the computer, and I have NEVER had a virus or anything of the sorts! (Yeah, hubby checked, point proven, point taken!) - This is at home though. I pretty much clean up once a week. My way of looking at it? Well, If I don't recall it, recocnise it or use it, i get rid of it. *grin* IF I needed it, I can always find it again! hehe

So, all in all, I guess the casino's are no worst than those porn sites, or those e-bay sites, or.... yadda yadda yadda

Hmm, a good idea indeed!

I'm wondering if casino stuff shows up as spyware because of the stuff that it leaves behind even after you uninstall the casino?
The only reason I mention it is because when we download and then join a casino, our hard drives hold the account numbers even if we uninstall the casino. If you reinstall it, violla! Your account number shows back up...so its sitting somewhere in there.
I cant remember which anti-spyware prog I used but one of them wiped out all my casino account numbers. It stunk because when I installed a few casinos, the account numbers didnt automatically pop up, leaving me to assume I had never played there and I re-signed up :( and got in trouble.
Was this a fluke or does anyone know which anti-spyware removes our account numbers or if thats not what actually did it?
I did mess around with the (not for PC retards) "hijack this" and got a little trigger happy around the same time so I just wanted to check.
Tanx!
