TEMECULA, Calif. (CAP) - With oil prices soaring over $130 a barrel, the average driver now spends more per week on gas than the average drug addict spends on heroin, according to a study published in the latest issue of the scientific journal, The Economics Of Street Drugs.

"This is definitely a first in the history of street drugs," said study author Mallory Fulbright. "It's incredible - heroin users are now spending more on gas to drive to their dealers to buy drugs than they are for the actual drugs. And with gas prices constantly climbing, the gap is just going to get wider and wider.

"I hate to say it, but this is the first time in American history that it's actually made sound economic sense to be a heroin addict," Fulbright added.

Aaron Dinnowitz, director of CAREFUL (Californians Are Respectfully Empowered For Using Life-altering-substances) told CAP News that the meteoric rise in gas prices contrasted with the relative stability of heroin prices should lead to a new supply-and-demand paradigm.

"Delivery service from dealers is right around the corner," Dinnowitz said. "People are not going to be able to afford to drive to their dealers to make their purchases. To stay in business, dealers will be forced to start offering delivery service, thereby absorbing the high cost of gasoline."

However, Dinnowitz said this solution really won't solve much. "The dealers who do deliver will be forced to increase the price of their product to cover their driving expenses, so it's really a vicious circle," he said. "It's almost going to make it tough for people to justify even doing heroin in the first place."

"We're all addicted to gasoline," added environmental physicist Christina Mellon, "but only some of us are addicted to heroin. To tell you the truth, with prices the way they are now, we'd be better off designing a car that runs on heroin, and injecting gasoline into our veins.

Mellon pointed out that gasoline in her native Alaska is running at $22 a gallon, meaning it would cost her $875 a week to drive her truck. "Shoot, I can stay high 24 hours a day, seven days a week for less than half that amount," Mellon lamented. "Gas blows."

American Energy director Pavel Kameness agreed. "We're screwed." said Kameness. "This oil crisis is going to drive us all crazy. Well, all except the people who don't care about anything because they are high on heroin.

"Those lucky bastards are just kicking back and counting up their fat stacks of extra cash," said Kameness. "Sweet."

"It's incredible - heroin users are now spending more on gas to drive to their dealers to buy drugs than they are for the actual drugs.

i made a pic with my cell phone but it didnt turn out well enough to post but i thought it was funny, the guy outside the gas station was putting up new pricing for the 3 grades of fuel and on the sign below it said " we feel your pain, as our prices are changing daily" has anyone ever noticed the taxes that the federal and state goverments get per gallon of fuel? if gas prices continue to jump, can the fed and state goverments waive those taxes or would it even help? just something i was wondering about yesterday..........laurie

i've heard folks pressuring governments to do just that (what laurie said). i heard on the radio canada's pm says there is little effect to be had should they intervene, but yet taxes comprise one-third to a half of the price we pay, how could they not afford to knock off a quarter a litre / buck a gallon? the radio also said canadians are petitioning to have some portion of the tax waived for the summer months only. we love our compromises eh! . . .we're pussies rofl. . . .

i remember not long ago george bush vetoed that bill that would raise the price of smokes by 40 cents a pack to devote the proceeds to street kids or literacy or school meals or extracurriculars, and he just axes the thing. even says on a microphone something like "i care about the future of america. that's why i'm going to veto the bill." guy bloody cracks me up how scheissdoof he can be. couldn't think of a better word.

You would think with the billions of dollars in surplus, the government would give alittle relief to Canadians.
It blows me away when I see a gas receipt and that for $10 worth of gas we are paying $3.71(give or take a few cents) in taxes.
Price of oil has gone up, electricity has gone up, etc. etc. The people I feel most sorry for are the seniors who are trying to survive on the small old age pension they receive a month.

US federal gas taxes are at 18.4 cents per gallon and each state has it's own gas tax rate from Alaska that has a .o8 cent a gallon tax to California that has a .455 cent a gallon tax. So if your in California your paying .535 a gallon in gas tax.

Oh ya then you add sales tax (in most states) on top of that... Yes Americans are being taxed on a tax... happens all the time here in the Land of Freedom and Justice...

they probably could waive those taxes but i doubt they would, in the uk the goverment are trying to get more people to use public transport, so in keeping the gas prices high they hope to force people into doing that,

Tax duty= 47.1p
Cost of petrol=23.2p
VAT=13.4p
Retailer and
delivery cost= 6.3p

read the figures closely and you will realise that government takes 60.5 pence from 90p sales. This is slightly above 66% of the price. Poor retailer is only getting about 5p.
i cant see how it can be justified,
also there isnt really any competion in the oil business so they can charge what they like,
