OK, it's 7 in the evening in muggy warm UK, I am going stir fucking crazy. In-laws around and they seem superglued to my new settees with the usual dreadful drivel on the TV in background. I have cooked and prepared all the dinner, started last night. I've feigned joy and surprise at the gifts I despise (cheers Justin!) and am sweltering like a glassblower's arse because she insists on having the heating a degree or two higher for the old coots. One good thing about working from home is that I don't have to endure those poxy Christmas hits on an office radio or anything. There are a few I can tolerate without running outside for a smoke. So to break the spirit-crushing torpor I'm in I would like you to nominate your 5 favourite Xmas hits, and afterwards a special mention for the ONE which really gets on your tits.

My 5:

1. The Darkness - When the Bells End.
2. Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas.
3. Band Aid - Feed The World
4. The Pretenders - 2000 Miles (It Must Be Christmas Time)
5. John Lennon - Imagine

Most hated - all the cover versions most especially that hideous Rudolph The Reindeer by Destiny's Child.

P.S. In that dreadful old Shakin' Stevens dirge Merry Christmas Everyone, is the blonde girl on the front of the sled simple or stoned?

I can give you the most annoying, worst xmas song ever because I must have heard it 2.123.245 times in my life by now...

Last Christmas - Wham

OMG,When I hear this tune on the radio I get shivers down my spine and for some reason my tolerance level drops below 0 and I have the urge of smashing things....:rolleyes:

It is the same as seeing Home Alone listed on 4 different channels again on Christmas day...
Can we please forget about this dreadful movie now?

Fave Xmas songs...Pfff have to think about that one.

Been listening to "Now That's What I Call Christmas" virtually every day for the last 3 weeks in my car, and I can honestly say I don't skip any when they come on - I like them all really.
But I would say my top 5 (in no particular order) are...

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day - Wizard
A Spaceman Came Travelling - The Carpenters
Last Christmas - Wham
All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
Driving Home for Christmas - Chris Rea (Because we drove 900 miles for Christmas this year!)

And a special mention for (it's NOT a flipping Christmas song for Christ's sake!!! but I love it anyway)...
The Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

KK

I have to say that the Frankie one is a classic KK, I agree. But Mariah Scary, you 'aving a larf??

Yep, Wham! one is piss-awful too Lotusch!

"Last Christmas I gave you my heart, the very next day I came out as gay...."

Jeez talk about bad timing, today WAS George Michael's 'Last Christmas' - newsflash he's just died aged 53, no suspicious stuff but was known to have drug/alcohol issues.

Just seen that news. What a year it has been, we have lost so many singers and actors :(

1. Feliz Navidad ... Jose Feliciano
2. First Christmas ... Stan Rogers
3. Jingle Bell Rock ... Bobby Helms
4. Fairytale of New York ... but the cover by the Mahones, since the lead singer is a old friend of mine
5. The Christmas Song ... Nat King Cole

I know I'm swimming against the current here, but I personally favour traditional Christmas carols like Good King Wenceslas, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, We Three Kings, Deck the Hall, O Christmas Tree...and I have a fondness for an endearing children's carol titled Christmas is Coming (the geese are getting fat etc).

But mention of Frankie Goes to Hollywood earlier on gives me an excuse to flag one of my favourites by that artist - One Night in Bangkok.

Mistress For Christmas - AC/DC

Run Rudolph Run - Lemmy

Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight) - Ramones

Fairytale of New York - Pogues/Kirsty MacColl

And heres a shocker....

Rocking around the Christmas tree - Brenda Lee. Proper cheers me up.

And a special mention to.....

I like quite a mixture when it comes to Xmas songs.

Number one favourite is Fairytale of new York never get sick of hearing it.

The others aren't really in order:

Wizzard-wish it could be Xmas everyday

Shakin Stevens-snow is fallin(I've loved it since I was about 4) :D

Dean martin-let it snow let it snow let it snow

Johnny matis-when a child is born

Special mention is boney m-marys boy child it gets me right there every time such a beautiful song. :)

Oh oh oh and this one!! It has such a beautiful melody. Sadly the singer passed away two weeks ago it said on YouTube.

I think it's mainly because it reminds me of that classic bit near the end of "Love Actually" ;)
Though I do have a slightly alternative musical taste to most people I know - for example, one of my favourite groups is Sparks (Ron & Russel Meal)

That's such sad news - and on Christmas day too! :(
Another massive music artist lost this year - I've lost count now...

I use to love Sparks! I remember they were playing live in the 70's film 'Rollercoaster'.

I have a couple of their albums, 'Kimono My House' is one, and a hits one.

As above, (Dave) the Greg Lake one is a classic IMO, a quite beautiful song but the lyrics have a dark side if you listen.

Dave - the Shakin' Stevens one is called Merry Christmas Everyone (you called snow is falling) and that's the one where for 34 years I haven't been able to work out if the girl on the sleigh is stoned or simple. (see the video!)

The Boney M one Mary's Boy Child was a massive hit back then - did you know the bloke in Boney M never sang a word in any of their songs? His lyrics were sung by some S.African guy? (blond curly hair, can't recall his name.)

Will need to listen again it is quite a sad sounding song but definitely way up there. Even more haunting to listen to now that he's gone.

I just used the in brackets title Dunover because I was being a lazy bastard:lolup: and it's tedious typing too much on this phone haha!

Yes I knew that about boney m heard it on totp2 a while ago.

Yeah I saw them on the Radio One thing they did - then went and bought the album (FFS): my favourite tracks are "Man Without a Tan" & "Piss Off!"

A lot of people probably only remember Sparks for "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us", but not many will know they started 45 years ago in 1971, have produced 23 studio albums and they are still going strong today!

I knew they were getting on a bit the mate I went with told me. He said to me "that guy on the keyboard with the glasses is in his 70s" and I was stunned! Agile for a pensioner!

I'd definitely go see them again.

The drummer of Franz is my 3rd cousin.my Nans sisters nephew. Pretty crazy eh!

I was thinking the very same last night... :(:(

That said I have enjoyed many of his records but the Last Christmas song was not one of them obviously.

RIP Michael.

I had not previously heard this (Spark - Greg Lake) Christmas song and I looked it up on YouTube as a result of this thread.

Have to agree it is a beautiful song....here's (courtesy YouTube) an alternative version which appealed to me ....Lake's voice clearly did not deteriorate.

I think as far as carols go, the original German Stille nacht, heilige nacht etc. is by far the best. We were taught at school in Germany (although a UK/US school for forces kids) to sing it in German, and I still love to watch videos of German carol singers doing the song. Very moving.
