Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

honesly, probably a lot of usalready have it and don't know and I don't mean because of testing and stuff - plenty will simply be asymptomatic with little or no symptoms and pass it along

I've been hacking last 3 days but it's also just 'that season' in general, air change, weather change, allergy season
but heck, could be corona and just the mildest of symptoms but still a carrier

we'll probably almost all be dosed in time
Easy for you to say, beak-boy

What kind of casual hacker are you?
Hacking is not a seasonal thing.

yanno, cuz why not another virus :D

well, it cant hurt; it alleviates symptoms and there's always good oral hygiene
and the mouth itself is wonderfully inhospitable environment regardless
but aint like the virus is just sittin' in there :)

Had an email from sainsbury's ceo Mike coupe, thought it might be useful info to share for brits in case they haven't seen it elsewhere:

A number of you suggested that we reserve an hour in stores for elderly and vulnerable customers. In response to this request, we will set aside the first hour in every supermarket this Thursday 19th March, for elderly and vulnerable customers. I hope that you can respect this decision and will work with us as we try our best to help those that need it the most. If you or an elderly family member, friend or neighbour would like to shop during this hour, please check online for your local supermarket opening hours.

We will also help elderly and vulnerable customers access food online. From Monday 23rd March, our online customers who are over 70 years of age or have a disability will have priority access to online delivery slots. We will contact these customers in the coming days with more details.

For any online customer who can travel to our stores, from Monday 23rd March, we will operate an expanded 'click and collect' service. We are significantly increasing the number of collection sites across the country over the coming days in preparation for this. Customers can place their order online as usual and pick it up from a collection point in the store car park. We believe this will also work for people who are self-isolating.

To help us get more essential items onto the shelves, from this Thursday 19th March, we will be closing our cafes and our meat, fish and pizza counters in supermarkets. This means we can free up warehouse and lorry capacity for products that customers really need. It will also free up time for our store colleagues to focus on keeping the shelves as well stocked as possible.

I mentioned last week that we had put limits on a very small number of products. Following feedback from our customers and from our store colleagues, we have decided to put restrictions on a larger number of products. From tomorrow, Wednesday 18th March, customers will be able to buy a maximum of three of any grocery product and a maximum of two on the most popular products including toilet paper, soap and UHT milk. We have enough food coming into the system, but are limiting sales so that it stays on shelves for longer and can be bought by a larger numbers of customers.

just to add, putting 'at risk' people in one clump can also be problematic

end of day? be a trooper and if able, do the shopping for these groups; best safe than sorry

thinking more about it, not sure the nose cleaning is such a good idea, might disrupt the ph or natural defence of the nasal passages and make life easier for a virus, just not worth taking the risk.

I did hear once about a tip for hayfever sufferers was to put a bit of vaseline inside your nose, that way irritating pollens get trapped in it and don't cause so much of a reaction, never done it myself but wonder how do you remove the vaseline containing the allergens back out

I’m personally am about to find out how this is going to effect the housing market.
Last tue accepted an offer and sold the house Wednesday and Thursday the agent was pushing me to instruct a solicitor which was done Friday morning.
Yesterday received confirmation of sale (which is as useful as a chocolate fire guard) on the other side the buyers mortgage company has booked the survey for next Tuesday.
It’s obvious agents and mortgage company and trying to push sales thru as fast as they can, as this process is normally painfully slow.
I’m certainly not holding my breath that this sale is going to happen until I sign the dotted line.

i am a HUGE believer, that the body is a remarkable machine..it's lived in the environs forever (specially) and has learned, given the chance, to adapt to most anything thrown at it

of course, that also means, giving it a fighting chance; good hygiene, foods and sleep

nono, I'm not a Lavender-cures-all or anti-vax or anti-antibiotics
but the body is amazing for tackling crap flung its way, and in turn, we do our best to help it along :)

I recommend lavender for anyone generally anxious, can be a bit messy to use massage oils but you can put a few drops in hand cream or some other carrier that will absorb. just takes the edge off things and helps you sleep too. Also very good if you burn your hand/finger on something, many a time a bit of lavender oil has stopped a painful blister appearing.

We should be a bit careful trying to do a better job than the body/nature, though antibiotics have been a life saver.

Don't be silly, he's just repeating what the experts told him. There are doctors on day and night here and on the weekend shows and that question has come up a 100 times.

Your messiah listening to experts? That would be a first, after all he knows more than anyone else and is thus the "biggliest" expert of them all.

Like this one:

1584510657619.png

And one week later, Mr T who suddenly discovered the press conference room in the WH, thinking that being there now every day makes him look like he is a leader and in control:

"This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."

Oh the messiah, he knew it all along. TBF, you are the silly one trying to defend the indefensible.

However, in typical Mr T fashion he has now smelled blood that he can get more money to splash around and keep the show going. Just a few weeks ago he blasted House Democrats for saying that his initial proposal for $1.25 Billion to fight the onsetting pandemic was not enough. They gave him $8.3B, plus another $100B from this weekend's legislation.

On top, 0% interest rate, massive intervention by the FED on the repo market plus other monetary stunts and now he's asking for another $1 Trillion..... the "bestest ever" economy surely would not need that kind of bailout, wouldn't it? Mnuchin straightaway scaring people with a projected 20% unemployment rate.

So to take his tweet from above, who's "inflaming the Corona situation"?

Just imagine how this guy managed to wiggle his way through his presidency. He got a $1.5 trillion tax cut that didn't boost the economy at all (average GDP growth is not different to Obama's time) but gave him enough to brag for the last years. The stock market soared because companies were doing massive share buybacks, completely disregarding that the underlying criteria did not change much. If it was built on solid ground, the DOW would not have plunged by as much as it did in the last week.

Now, he's about to get another $1T+ to keep the show going and put more lipstick on the pig.

No doubt, he will tell everyone what a great job he's done over and over and over and over and over again.

I'd imagine services and facilities get reintegrated gradually and not all in one fell swoop, plus the longest I can estimate full- or part-closures will be a year at most. At least until the vaccine becomes commonplace
Politicians over here are now predicting a major recession (don't forget, Australia was barely impacted by the GFC) as many jobs go under, with anyone affected eligible for welfare.

It is estimated there will be approximately 500k people who lose their jobs due to the initial shutdown, and the longer it goes on, the higher that figure will become. In fact, ScoMo has stated that we are looking at a 6 month shutdown minimum.

When eventually re-integration happens, if that re-integration really does take 6+ months, it will be a totally different country to the one we are all used to, as many types of businesses will have disappeared, never to be seen again.

Which means that the rate of unemployment may never recover again, and countries will have to adjust to a new reality of becoming welfare states.

And food for thought as to what is happening right now... "36,000 people applied for 5,000 shelf-stacking jobs at Coles as the Australian economy teeters on the brink ."

The 21st century is exhausting.
Never a truer word was spoken. Who would have thought that back in December 1999, the Y2K bug was going to be the least of our problems?

This hasn't worked out so well over here. The time slot for most supermarkets is from 07:00 - 08:00, but the supply trucks hadn't arrived, and there was still nothing more on the shelves than there was the day before.

However, once they get the supply chain fixed, then hopefully it will work as planned.

Ditto. But unfortunately the checkouts don't seem to recognise when more products than the limit have been purchased, and the cashiers themselves just seem too overwhelmed by it all, to the extent they are just letting anything through.

Again, our PM ScoMo has publicly criticised hoarders, and told them "To Stop It as it is UNAUSTRALIAN"!

Not sure anyone is listening though.

My #860 post on Page 43 doesn't look so fanciful now.

I think I am going to have a great new career as a psychic. Taking potential customers in 3...2...1..
pft terrible psychic...should be minus 100, 99, 98

same man. I booked a family holiday for us in Spain at the end of May for the first “abroad” holiday with the 4 of us.

will i get my £3k back? No idea. My kids 6th birthday is in 2 weeks which she was super excited about inviting her friends over. Which is now gonna be cancelled.
It’s a shit time for everyone.

the main worry for me is job security - but alas we will get through this and it WILL get better.
Chin up mate, the ride does finish, it’s just crap journey

Yes true best playing it by ear if it’s all off still 7 days before I’m guessing you will be able to postpone to a date of your choice :) I truly hope it all works out for you and the family x

Surely the panic buying will subside in a week or two, theres only so much frozen mince you can put in your freezer, only so many toilet rolls and kitchen rolls you can store in your cupboards. Once everyone has gone crazy and bought enough toilet rolls to last 3 years, then they won't need to go back and shops will get back to normal?

People just buy more freezers to stock yet more food..... yes freezer sales have gone up quite a lot since this virus.

Quite a bit of good news on the Sun website,if you can believe them.
China has closed the virus hospitals as new cases have virtually stopped.
New and faster testing methods have been produced and progress made with treatments.

Although they managed to start it whatever China had does seems to be working,We should be looking
very closely at how they have tackled it, but it might just be the natural cycle of the virus and they are
months ahead of us.We are still in the very early stages and what we do now is crucial,Dont see
much leadership,Boris would never have won WW2.

illness like i do it is hard to relay to people that you are one of the customers they speak of. I gave up long ago because some (not all) people do not understand just because someone doesn't look sick that they are not. I had a cousin who passed away at 21 due to severe heart issues face the same issues as i do. After a major time in my life where i was in hospital for 2 weeks i used a motor cart to buy food. The manager approached me and said that the carts were reserved for people who needed them. I rolled up my sleeve and showed him the IV port also the bandage around my throat from the surgery. I had my coat on and had zipped it to the top because it was winter and it was cold out. He apologized and explained some people play in the carts or use them when they are not needed. Even though i was in no condition to walk or cook meals (the reason i was buying food) i got out of the cart and i finished my shopping. Even if the USA did something similar i would wait in line like everyone else. It gets exhausting explaining why i have handicapped plates and i look well. I have went thru this for many years even having people evil eye me or just go out the way to tell me off. I ignore it most times because at the end of the day i have learned over years to pick my battles. I agree that the elderly should go and be able to do their shopping before everything is gone. Also if someone with an invisible illness can get their shopping done without feeling rushed it would be nice. Kudos if the brits(not sure if this word is correct to use or it is not acceptable so i apologize in advance ) put this in place. Lucky me i caught the store yesterday when the trucks were just coming in and i managed to get milk and bread. I only bought 2 of each trying to be mindful of people like my mom who might need these items. I also bought a bit of meat. ( I am still waiting for my dad to call me and update on my mother's surgery. She was still very sleepy all day yesterday but she seems to be ok for now) .

Depending on how long this goes on, flying might be more difficult afterwards.

IMO, that is the usual herd behaviour when government handouts are about to be announced. Those shouting loudest will be heard and served first - is the widespread belief.

Every Jim, Jane and Johnny will cry now for assistance from the governments, one of the most typical aspects of socialism. Funny and hypocritical at the same time, that those opposing socialism (which is not communism) most fervently are now those shouting first and loudest for the assistance.

Companies and corporations should be forced to repatriate all cash funds parked in foreign tax havens, sell the shares they bought back in the last 12 months, reduce salaries for top managers by 75% or more, etc. etc before being even considered for government bailouts.

Thats usually how it goes.
Capitalism is all fun and games until you hit a rough patch and could use a bit of the good old socialism.
:P

Like you say, they should be forced to use all funds&sell whatever they can before getting any sort of bailout.
If i need a bailout i first have to sell any expensive stuff i own and deplete my funds before i am eligible to receive money.
I dont have much sympathy for Ceo:s crying their crocodile tears while taking home multi-million dollar salaries.
Its a really shitty situation for the folks working at airports tho.
