Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

Welcome to 21st century, the millenium la-la-land.

Social media is such a nice thing to have. Everyone has a voice. Too bad it mostly shows just how stupid some people are. And how many there actually are.

Decency and common sense. I miss those.

♪ Wanna wanna wanna be. Have some, have some, have some beat. Put it, Put it, All on the line ♫ :drink:
Is that Spice Girls? If it's Ghost I'm putting you straight on Ignore

Do not see the problem staying indoors.

After all soon all pubs, cinemas , restaurants will be closed.

All concerts , sports events etc. will be cancelled.

Only supermarkets will be open. As it is Scotland it just pisses with rain everyday not like the weather to go anywhere that isn't closed.

To be honest way things are bloody going there is no choice but stay indoors as nowhere left to bloody go. :(

:(

This is the biggest tragedy for me personally atm. Such a first world problem to have and pretty selfish I admit.

Regardless. I hope things will settle down and we can all get back to enjoying the good things in life.

Its your own special song then :D

I'm a special boy. This is what I tell my mirror image every time I wake up. Then I just usually start to sing and dance spontaneously.

With all the shitty things in life, if you can't have a laugh (at yourself) and be happy, then all hope is lost.

Starting my night shift with coffee and this fine tune:

:p

PS. I'm the one in a blue jumpsuit on the left.

I am so happy to have these right now, the virus can go to hell

Oh I forgot to add a packet of cigarettes in the pick as well

All the good things in life are generally regarded as "bad for you". But then again, when one meets Peter at the pearly gates (well some might meet him), do one really get extra points for good behaviour ;)

Whilst I understand most of you see this as an overreaction, you must not forget a few things. The Coronavirus can be transmitted by infected people who do not show symptoms, which makes it tough to contain as it is sheer impossible to see clusters before an actual outbreak in a certain area. And in our mobile era, it can spread exponentially faster than ever.

Second, by WHO estimates, Coronavirus is minimum 10x more lethal than the usual seasonal flu. 1% compared to 0.1%. Current numbers have it at over 3% but that will come down the more people are tested.

I've read extensively about the Spanish Flu (wrong name as it appeared first in the US) in the past day and can see a lot of parallels but also some differences. Most importantly, medicine is much more advanced but also that the virus has evolved greatly in a relatively short period.

However, the reaction of some countries is very similar - downplay the problem, blame others, realize it is becoming a problem, rushed response to try and contain it.

Should we panic? Of course not but neither should we be totally negligent.

Here a pic from that time. BTW, the Spanish Flu was most lethal in the 18-40 years age bracket. Funny how nature had the viruses evolve to become more lethal for the weaker part of society. Natural selection to keep the strongest???

realzing it's a potentially life-threatening illness and taking all due precautions - sensible reaction

panic-buying a supply you couldnt even feasibly use during said illness - overreaction

I can personally assure you that anxiety might cause some err... gastrointestinal issues  Been through that when I was in the discovery phase of my anxiety which was at one point misdiagnosed as a chronic intestine infection. Sadly I'm not joking.

Basically like with everything, common sense should prevail. Our politicians and medical 'experts' are complicit in allowing this situation to arise when they should've acted sooner. It's pretty apparent they wanted to let the economy run. By the same token, people need to take account of their own welfare to the best of their ability.

It's these 'extremes' that define our great times. It's all the "Government's fault!" and will end humanity, or it's something people dismiss.

Again, I'm resigned to catching it, may as well. Until that happens, will I mingle with the masses? Nope

Will I see my mum over the next few months? Nope

Will I abscond from any function at the merest hint of having caught it? Yep!

And yes, daily coverage of it is necessary up to a point. But with that comes all manner of misinformation to go with it, I won't say Fake News, I'll reserve that term for another thread :D

But to insist Social Media hasn't factored is pure delusion, as with the media's scaremongering. They could just as easily fill every headline with people that have recovered from the virus etc. But why let the truth get in the way of a good story eh!

Harry, if I'm not mistaken you live in Singapore right? If you compare how we in the west react to SE Asian countries don't you have to laugh? Just a little?

The way I see it, even though I work from home and have 0 need to go out, I'm doomed
Mom works in a nursing home.
She has to interact with other people with go out and shop and go home, and s interact with their spouses who go out and work and shop, who (you see where it's going) who then return to work, who interact with mom, who has to come home here.

We arent all so privvy to rake in 6 figures and live in exclusion with the privleges of groceries delivered to our doosteps and ample funds in the bank to 'ride it out'

moral: limit exposure, prepare adequately, minimize risk, cross yo fingers

They are not really laughing as the issue is too serious but more like  on how other countries have approached the problem.

SG learned from the SARS pandemic and has set-up an entire system to respond to future incidents. That has proven to be immensely effective and hence, no panic buying, but a good sense of dealing with the issue. E.g. they have stored all essential food/daily needs/medical supplies to be self-sustained for up to 6 months without the need for imports (and Singapore imports a lot).

One of the most important parts: Keep the populace informed with facts!!!! You can read more here:

I just came back from Starbucks which is in a shopping mall. The supermarket shelves are overflowing with toilet paper :D

Yeah exactly  is how I would call our approach. As if we haven't learned from any contagious disease in the not so distant past in SE Asia, did our governments and institutions really think there wouldn't be a more potent bug coming our way at some point?

When I shared some vids from Twitter to some of my friends and family how Chinese workers in Wuhan were spraying disinfectant on their streets and buildings and said: with all the international traffic these days this might be us in half a year, they just laughed at me... I haven't dared to ask them what they think about it now but I'm sure they remember...

Admittedly, SG was hit rather hard in the SARS pandemic, plus, the founder was a germaphobe, hence, why e.g chewing gum was prohibited decades ago.

What is different to other countries is that they learned and acted proactively to make sure they are much better prepared for a future pandemic, which we have now.

Just read this paragraph, the amount of work being done to get all cases traced must be phenomenal. But that is how it should be done everywhere.

I live by lake simcoe Ontario on Thursday after declaring a pandemic iam worried my wife 61 type 1 diabetic for 40 years on a pump. Heart issues, and the 2 grocery stores the hoarders cleaned it out in 2hrs. So no joke.
Ty but we just staying home. Be safe all going to get worse before better. Got food everything we need. Plus online casinos and of course meister.

Just watching the news, and they brought up a point I had never even considered.

Will the NBN (National Broadband Network) be able to support the additional strain of all the people who are about to begin working from home, the people who are now self-isolating/those who work in a business that has been temporarily closed, with nothing else to do but go online, and everyone else? In other words, virtually the entire population of Australia.

And I'm guessing that this situation will be replicated in virtually most countries.

I think we can safely assume there will be alot more people watching Netflix, youtube and other streaming services.
That eats up alot of bandwith.

Dont worry, i know a guy who is good with computers.
He will save the internet for us!

Right now there are no accurate figures to determine exactly how deadly this virus is, due to the lack of available testing worldwide, as well as what is widely recognised as under-diagnosis in many cases where the infected person has recovered, which could completely alter the fatality rate downwards.

So even though COVID-19 may be "10x more lethal than the usual seasonal flu", it could well be that it turns out to be far less lethal due to the number of people who have caught it and recovered, after exhibiting only minor symptoms. After all, even with the seasonal flu, symptoms always vary from fairly mild to extremely severe, resulting in deaths.

I agree the lack of a vaccine is very worrying, but many people struggle through bad flu seasons without any vaccine, and still recover.

Scaremongering has caused widespread hysteria and panic, and threatened sanity and reason across the board. Countries in lockdown, hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk, pensioners being forced to self-isolate for months..... All I can say is: "Stop the world, I want to get off".

Just to jump in real quick - as an admin :D

OMG LUL

Here comes the expert
.....

Why don't you take your fake obnoxious tone and 'be on your way'
Please - please, folks - take care on how your tone may appear to others. You might think it's funny, but down deep inside, it's not.

This is a serious situation we're in, and we have to be aware that loads of members are being stressed by this pandemic. Some of us know people who are sick, or worry about people that might get sick, are separated from loved ones and can't get home - that are worried about their livelihoods because they work in the service industry , etc.

So let's make an effort not to chide others no matter what. For some people - this forum is the only social outlet that they have for the next few weeks. Please keep this in mind. Thank you.

You mean Pornhub, don't you? :D

I dont really know what this "pornhub" thing that you are talking about is.
Is it just a specific brand of hub, like with pornflakes and porncorn?
I will have to do some googling.

Plenty of bread and milk and normal stuff, shelves bare of soap etc, a few packs of toilet rolls left, quite a bit kitchen roll. Queues at normal checkouts were massive, mainly due to idiots bulk buying, saw one guy with 3 trolleys stacked overflowing with 12 packs of water, because clearly the water supply is about to be turned off.

Aldi over the road was different, queues to get in car park so I didn't go in.

I feel Casinomiester hit the nail on the head. I for one do not have much to share because i can not play at most of the casinos. I have found myself posting more these last few days out of sheer boredom. I have always liked to read the posts on here and even chuckled a bit over the banter. I agree with a lot of what people are saying . I can give first hand account on the part where some people are taking this to dizzying extremes. I think i am having a bit of panic over the media coverage of this and even called my doctor today to see if i need to be tested. I have been having shortness of breath and heaviness in my chest that could be a sign of anxiety. No fever, body chills etc. My mom is having surgery today on her adrenal glands . Something about a growth that could be cancer. I wish she could have waited like i am planning on doing. Not the same kind of surgery and i am not a doctor or nurse to know if she could have waited. Just being here and being able to have some contact is helpful to me at least. I do not PM many people and in fact only a handful since being on CM. I do not feel comfortable enough being here to know who i can PM if i just want to pass the time with a friendly chat. To be honest most times i feel out of place struggling to understand some of the slang words and having to Google others. Google can be wrong at times. I would ask but would be too embarrassed to. Sorry i am rambling :p have a peaceful day if you can.

This isn’t about hype or panic or media. The Coronavirus crisis is mostly about protecting vulnerable people and preventing our health care systems from completely breaking down. That is the purpose of social distancing - to slow the rate of infection and spread it out over a longer period of time so the health care system can function.

Let’s say a city has 1000 people infected with Coronavirus. 800 of those people will come through just fine. About 150 will need some hospitalization and oxygen supplementation. And about 50 of them will need to be on a ventilator in intensive care.

If those infections occur within a short period of time like a week or two, then that is a staggering number for a hospital to deal with all at once. That is when you start to see increasing fatalities, not only with COVID-19, but also with all the other types
of emergencies like heart attacks, car accidents, and strokes.

The hospitals and medical staff cannot provide intensive care for that many patients all at once. That is the point.

Preparing for me and the wife to self isolate from this weekend and telling visitors
not to come for the forseeable future, going to Iceland to stock up the freezer, got a Tesco order coming friday, expecting half of it to be out of stock.
A care worker came today, really shocked when I said we would not be needing her.
Nice girl but her attitude was but why i always wash my hand and wouldnt come
if I felt poorly, they have had no advice about the virus from the company and do not get issued with masks or handwash which is pretty crap.

My ex partner worked for home care companies and they all where in a constant state of crisis management due to staff shortages ,covering shifts and meeting the standards of care that is expected of them. I hope that the government give these care services and carers assurances that they will be provided with every means of support they need in order for them to continue providing their services

Popped into Tescos on Sunday, everything seemed normal, plenty of toilet rolls and no big queues.
Went get essentials (ciggies) and just to be safe filled the car up.Petrol shortages would really
bugger the country up.

We're swimming in fuel at the moment, the price has collapsed and people aren't travelling so no worries there.

As for panic buying, went to supermarket Saturday only to see shelved cleared of white own-brand loaves. Well, that's what I thought. Being quite tall, I stood back and noticed there were at least 2 dozen loaves at the back of the top shelf about 6 foot off the ground lol that your average panic buyer missed. I dropped one ( a loaf!) while putting them in my trolley, squatted down to pick it up and noticed a dozen more at the back of the bottom shelf which is only about 4 inches off the ground. The front of the bottom shelf was empty so people simply never bothered to bend down and check as from their eye line all they could see was bare metal. I can tell I'm right as the premium bread like Hovis at double the price was also cleared bar a couple of loaves, so people would have nabbed the cheaper ones before those...

We must have the laziest panic buyers in the UK round here, or they're just snobs.

Well, I have to take my quote back, not totally but somewhat for sure.

There was an onset of panic buying today after Malaysia announced the lockdown of the country and since SG imports some 90% of its stuff it worried quite a few people. However, in typical SG-style the government had within hours security/extra police in each supermarket controlling the flow and amounts people would purchase. Anyone trying to hoard was sent back to unload part of the trolley. Still, longer than usual queues built rather quickly which then gets amplified via social media, further increasing the frenzy etc etc.

It all relaxed and returned to normal once a minister issued a statement that there are no shortages of anything.

Pub night was cancelled tonight. Now this shit is real :(

And I'm stranded here - had to renew my passport being told it takes 2-3 weeks - it's over two weeks now and I feel trapped. I was planning to head out to the desert to build a barn.

Hey peeps - I just want to reiterate that I was not singling out poor ol' Goatwack on how to behave nicely - but everyone here. I know there was some tit for tat going on (hmm - gonna get a comment there I suppose), but I failed to quote everyone who was being a bit snarky and/or mean. It was meant to be a general statement. So it wasn't only Goatwack :D

So again, please don't be mean - people, be nice. :D
