This is just an observation I made today when visiting the site using the Chrome browser. I am running Ubuntu Linux (12.04) and on every occasion I visited the site, the browser just crashed and locked up my entire system so badly that I had to hit the restart button. I had a look to see if anyone had posted about this before and couldn't find anything so I just posted to bring this to your attention. When I use firefox it all works fine so I will do that in future instead. I hope this is the right section of the site to post this information too.

Thanks! Maybe no one has noticed this before since only 1.51% visitors use Linux - but Max does. Maybe we could ask him to trouble shoot this. :D

Actually, I have always wanted to mention this. When I try and get my PM's from my Blackberry  it crashes. I guess good luck finding the other meister member that uses a Blackberry to trouble shoot this. Might be easier for everyone if I just buy a new phone.

About 15% of the people here access the site by phone...1.01% of those use Blackberry. So yes, get a new phone. :p

Okay, I'm using Mint 14 (which is based on Ubuntu 12.10) and Chromium 25.x -- that's an unbranded version of Chrome -- and I can cruise around the site and forums without problem.

Personally I bailed on Ubuntu because there were too many issues with it, 12.04 in particular. I understand that this is due -- at least in part -- to the serious infrastructure changes they're making in order to move the system toward mobile devices.

My advice would be to update to 12.10 or 13.04 and see how things go from there. If you really want to improve your Linux experience I'd advise moving away from Ubuntu in favour of Mint. My research says that Mint is considered the most stable Ubuntu-based Linux spin available today. It also has a much larger user base and is the most popular Ubuntu sytem by far. In other words a much better user-driven support network than Ubuntu.

If the OP would like to chat further about Linux variants I'm always game. I've tried about three dozen of them this year and have about eight installed on my computer as we speak. Yeah, I know, nobody needs eight different operating systems but what's a hobby without a little crazy rolled in?

One word solution to this one: Android. Over the past 18 months I've used two Android smartphones and a tablet on the site without issues.

I just wanted to mention the crash issue and was really surprised to hear that only 1.51% of site visitors use Linux - had I known that was the case I would not even have mentioned it at all.

Yeah I hear that Mint is the next big thing with Linux distros. Ubuntu 12.04 is the development environment I use at work and so I favour it for home use also. I really do not like 12.10 or 13.04 not just because of the aesthetics but because they don't have long term support which is very important for me to have a stable development environment. I have been intending to give Mint a try for a while now and I will do it for sure in the near future. I will perhaps first give it a run using virtualbox so I minimise the risk of trashing my bootloader...

My understanding is that's true insofar as the Ubuntu family is concerned: as the Ubuntu guys persist in their drive towards mobile they will inevitably shed a goodly part of their user-base who simply don't give a monkey's bollocks about mobile. Some of us are desktop users because we want to be, not because we can't afford a smartphone. Ubuntu's future plans are basically saying that those users can get stuffed. C'est la vie, and that's where Mint comes in because they've declared themselves to be desktop-focused for the foreseeable future.

My bet is that the future of Linux (on non-mobile devices) is neither Ubuntu nor its derivatives. Being mobile-obsessed is going to cripple that whole segment of the Linux family tree, IMO.

Then I must definitely give it a try. To be honest, most of the things other than web browsing I could quite happily do on a command line Linux - I tend to just do programming in general. The reason I did not get on with 12.10 was the way that it seems to be going down the mobile route (and don't even get me started on Windows 8...). I am a bit of a neo-luddite in regards to mobile devices - I want to be able to ring people and send text messages on a phone and anything else is just not needed. If Mint caters for the desktop user then I definitely need to get on board.

Wanted to add that if you're just doing basic web browsing and are happy with command line Linux then you may well be better served by opting for one of the less bloated Linux distros. If you want to go super-minimal I have tried and quite liked antiX and Crunch-Bang (aka "#!"), both excellent spins though #! has a MUCH larger user base not to mention a very active and helpful forum community.

Other, less minimal distros -- but still slim-n-trim compared to Ubuntu and variants -- worth mentioning are the Puppy variants, siduction, and my personal fav, Manjaro. I also quite like aLinux -- previously known as "Peanut" -- because I have a weakness for the Enlightenment window manager but it's user base is miniscule compared to the others and pretty much has to be considered an experimental work-on-progress.

Well I had a go on 12.10 and 13.04 Ubuntu and I did not really like what I found at all. I think I will stick with 12.04 while I play around with Mint 14. Doing some reading around, it seems to have overtaken Ubuntu as the common face of Linux for the time being so I think I will take that direction. I did play around a little on a live disk on a magazine cover and I like the look of it to be honest. Having said that I do still like 12.04 - although I should mention that I have the Gnome classic desktop installed (I cannot abide Unity at all).

Yeah, I feel the same way about Unity. Before I dumped Ubuntu in favour of Mint I had pretty much settled on Xubuntu (XFCE).

Not sure why - whether it is a change to the casinomeister site code or an upgrade in my chromium browser, but I have not had the crash occur now for more than 2 weeks. Whatever the problem was it appears to have been rectified.
