Brant Dunshea, the BHA's chief regulatory officer, has publicly expressed what appeared to be total confidence that racing will be allowed to resume on June 1 and suggested the government has recognised its unique circumstances compared to other sports.

Earlier this month, the government confirmed professional sport, even behind closed doors, could not be staged until the beginning of June at the earliest in line with its easing of lockdown restrictions.

"I'm incredibly confident," Dunshea told Luck on Sunday.

"We cannot control the government's decision-making but we've been working continuously to make sure we're in a strong position. We're very excited and positive we'll be ready to go from June 1."

Can’t wait for it to come back but is this going to herald the death of the Betting Office?
Can’t see how they can social distance to enable them to open up - how many times do you go to a bookie and people are huddled around the paper on the walls picking their selection for the next race.
Internet bookies will have a field day, but for ordinary punters it’s going to be a strange season with smaller fields and no 25 runner handicaps on a Saturday.

That seems to be in contradiction to what I heard in an interview with the BHA on SSR this afternoon where the official said it seemed more likely to be mid June when racing will be back? I have SSR on now so hopefully that interview will appear again?
Edit. It will be important to follow the markets as apposed form when they do come back because some trainers have been training more than others over the past couple of months

I said weeks ago I thought June 1st would be optimistic, but we shall see. Still not convinced myself, its only a week away.

Do you think that the High Street bookmakers will open up shortly after the racing kicks off?

Rob :)
I think they rely on FOTB's on the whole, and most have 3/4 together. For a 2m distance surely they could only have one switched on in a bank of 3, so they would have to re-route the ADSL lines to different areas of the shop to have them all on at once. That won't happen in a week in every shop. They would also need screens up.

In this day and age a betting shop seems like a step back in time. I'm 53 and it must be at least 10, if not 15+ years since I have been in one. Much preferred being down the pub watching the racing and phoning bets through.

As Colin said, it's only the FOBT they have kept the shops on life support. If the UKGC clamp down further on them, there will be no point for the majority to open

Now with smart phones with super fast connections now allowing you to put on bets and watch the race ect, from where ever you choose, they seem redundant anyway.

I think the only advantage they have is for larger cash bets - I hear a lot of people, after a few winning bets, getting limited to what they can stake.
I can't see how they can operate with 3 or 4 FOBT's going over, and if they do survive this I think there will be a lot of changes needed, can't see the late night opening 6 days a week.
I do go in on a Saturday, still like the feel of a paper docket from time to time, plus some local chains have far better prices and good EW betting offers - most weekends they will have at least one big handicap with 6 places and 1/4 the odds a place whereas Skybet is always 1/5 the odds and 5 places.

Brant Dunshea has just been on and he is hoping for a June 1st start. After the Cumming fiasco how can the gov not allow the next fase?

having screens between the terminals is fine and satisfies the social distancing. They’re being installed from June 11th over 3 weeks.
